When in the Outer Banks with small sugar monsters in tow, you should check out Duck Donuts. They've got printed order forms, but we just picked off the photo menus at the register. No coffee drinks for us, though they seemed to have a good variety if that's your thing. The cashier was friendly and patient. The boys stood on the stools to peer behind the glass at the doughnut machine and all the toppings. They got our order right and kept the line moving around 9am on a Friday morning. They had some comfortable chairs inside to ease the wait and plenty of merchandise to purchase. They offer plain cake doughnuts with creative combinations of sprinkles, glazes, and other toppings. The doughnuts themselves are good, a little on the greasy side, particularly when glazed (since the glaze doesn't let the grease out). While my boys loved anything with sprinkles and the French Toast, I prefer the simplicity of the plain old fashioned sugar and cinnamon. Another of our party bought a dozen separately for us to have on hand the next morning. They're better fresh (aren't all doughnuts) but they held up well for just 1 day. read more

Finally had my first Duck Donut. Folks from work would bring some in, but they always looked cold, deformed, and in a grease stained box. So I never thought to try any. Didn't look appetizing at all. But was in OBX and swung by Try My Nuts store next door to Duck Donuts. So we walked over to get a couple of donuts. I actually had no idea they were all made to order. I just assumed they were like Dunkin Donuts pre-made stuff. Pleasantly surprised...we got a glazed with coconut and an apple streusel and ate it freshly made. Really great! So I'm not a donut connoisseur, but the donuts I had from Duck Donuts were pretty darn good! This donut shop is similar to a crispy cream shop in that they prepare the donut right in front of you, but it's to order. The batter is a cake batter that is poured once you place your order; which by the way is a three step process. First, chose type of glaze (there were about 6-8 choices) next the topping and last a drizzle. So, imagine having a powered donut with coconut topping with chocolate caramel drizzle...ummmy !! How can you give less than 5 stars to a duck donuts? There's a reason people are obsessed with these donuts. They're not prolific where I live, so it's been 3 years since I had my last duck donut, and when I saw one on my recent vacation to the OBX, I told my husband we would be getting these donuts. I had forgotten just how amazing they are. We got there about 5 minutes after they opened on a holiday, so you never know what the service will be like, but there were absolutely no issues. I also felt bad that we had ordered 18 donuts right before a girl came in wanting 6. I was pleasantly surprised that they gave us the first dozen, her the next half dozen, then us the last half dozen. I'm sure she really appreciated this too. I picked up a few donuts of an evening with the intent of eating them on my early morning departure on a drive longer than I would like for it to be heading home. It was awesome that they made them right there, showed them to us, and were just really nice people. The store was clean, and plenty of mugs/cups/fun items to purchase if one desires. This was my 1st experience with Duck Donuts. We had driven by this spot a few times in out OB stay and I had heard people singing their praises whenever we mentioned that we were OB bound. When we arrived, there was a line out the door. A lot of people get frustrated with lines, but at a place like this, that line gives you time to truly decide what youll be getting. They have an almost endless amount of combinations available, as well as a donut of the day. For my 1st foray, I chose a cinnamon sugar donut, a lemon icing w/ coconut (WINNER), and a chocolate icing w/ bacon. While Duck Donuts are at their most delicious when theyre fresh and warm, I would recommend letting them cool a bit so you dont lose your toppings or, and I know this will sound crazy, use a fork and knife. This location has a wee tiny bit of seating outside as well. But its Outer Banks so, ya know, wind. I don't know how much better a place could be. There are donuts. And these donuts aren't crispy on the outside, soft on the inside deep-fried krispy kremers (if that's your thing). These are cake donuts. It's almost like a cupcake in donut form. And the best thing? They're made to order! You can make however many combination of glaze/icing you want, with toppings. We got a dozen and watched them being made. You can tell they're fresh because they're hot and the lady that handed the box to us left chocolate finger prints on the box. These tasted really good heated up for 10 seconds (don't listen to the box, it's 10, not 8 seconds you need). They were so good that we considered getting another dozen for the trip back up to Virginia, just the cinnamon and sugar kind, but we resisted. They were also so good that I wanted to make sure they lasted the whole week. That was a mistake. A few days later, they were stale tasting. But that's not their fault. Crazy long line down the sidewalk...finally through the door...just to find a packed room. Oh well, it's packed for a reason, because it's worth the 35 minute wait. When you get in the door, you get an order form and pencil. Complete it and give to the cashier. Then walk through watching them freshly make donuts right in front of you. They plop into melted lard, fall off the little conveyor type table into a big bowl. They took our 1/2 dozen and smacked them down (smacking gets them deeper in icing) into maple icing, chocolate icing, strawberry icing, lemon icing and then sprinkled bacon on the maple icing ones. Toppings are just enough not to be overwhelming but feature the biggies -- peanuts, coconut, icings, and of course maple bacon, the king of donut toppings. But even though the ordering process seems bullet proof -- little yellow cards you fill out -- our order got royally botched. And we weren't alone as another guy had a misfire too. The cake donuts are literally made right in front of your eyes, from the dough, to the dropping in the oil, the flippage, to the popping out piping hot. Next you decide on what you want from plain, to dips (think chocolate, vanilla, lemon, etc.) and toppings. There are pretty much a gazillion combos of donuts and toppings. There is a daily donut, on this date, it was "The Beach," this had vanilla toppings and cinnamon sugar. So after deciding what we all wanted, which BTW is hard, I mean it is a lot. We took our warm, topping fulfilled donuts and headed on out. Now to the good part, the donuts!! What can I say, pure damn perfection. Prior to our visit to Outer Banks all we kept hearing is "Try Duck Donuts!" ...and now I'll be telling people the same thing. We arrived around 7am on a Thursday & the line was already to the door. I would recommend going as early as your can or maybe later, when there's not a breakfast rush because by he time we left 7:30am the line was out the door and down he building! The staff was very trained & got through the customers quickly. Where to even start with this review?? Oh yes, how about that I'm fighting the urge to hop in my car and drive three hours back to OBX to get more of the amazing donuts! Duck Donuts cooks their delicious donuts in small batches so when you order they are still warm. Each donuts is glazed to order in any combination you would like. Combinations that my friend and I tried: Day 1: Cinnamon Sugar, Chocolate Coconut, Chocolate Sprinkles, Lemon Coconut. Day 2: in addition to some of the same from Day 1 we also got a Pumpkin donut, Peanut Butter Chocolate, Maple Bacon and Strawberry Chocolate. I know, I know sounds like a ton of donuts for two people but they were just way to good. The ones purchased on Day 2 were brought home with us, but I've already polished off one and taken a bit out of a few others. The only one that I'm not a huge fan of was the Maple Bacon. It might appeal to other people but it's not grown on me yet. (Maybe in the future) If you are in OBX all I can say is, Go here, Go here, GO HERE! You will thank me later.
