The flavors we picked: peanut butter fluff, Neapolitan, cookies and cream, raspberry sugar cookie, peanut butter blossom, coconut, lemon bar, snowball , berry Christmas cookie, chocolate caramel cookie, chocolate crinkle cookie, and chocolate explosion. Stopped in for a treat since it seems to be the beat donut spot around. This is a set up for freshly made and decorated donuts, customized to whatever you want. We got a half dozen which were served warm, and still pretty warm when we drove about 10 minutes back home. I was surprised the frosting didn't melt off! I am an absolute donut fiend and have my share of Duck Donuts every time I come to the Outer Banks. And while I love them, they aren't my absolute favorite for one main reason... coating the donuts while they are still warm. "Delicious donuts in shopping center with Food Lion in Nags Head" Duck is just a little ways north, but you can get Duck Donuts here in Nags Head! In the strip mall with the Food Lion, you'll see this place hopping, but please note their hours of 7am-2pm... not an evening stop. I've come a few times, and it's often crowded. My one complaint is that the "flow" in the restaurant is not that clear for newcomers... it would make more sense to have the cash register near the front and waiting area near the back, but it's the opposite, so people come in and get confused about who's in line to order vs. milling about waiting for their donut orders. (To be clear, I think it's not their fault, given the shape of the store.) Duck Donuts has a ton of GREAT flavor options (including a coating and a topping)-- check out their website for specifics. What's also wonderful is you get them fresh and prepared-to-order. They come to you hot and almost gooey, but note they can be a little greasy as a result, so be careful where you set down the paper bag/ box after you leave. Also, you'll have to wait a few minutes -- it's not "grab and go" since they're preparing them to order on the spot. The staff are thoughtful and friendly. I've also come on "National Donut Day", when they give everyone a free donut (not custom -- it's a specific kind), and they're still patient despite the place being a bit of a zoo. Let me be clear-- this ain't no Dunkin (which I also like). It's not racks of donuts sitting since the morning. These are FRESH, custom-prepared, and delicious. Well worth checking out. read more

5 STARS IN THE OFF SEASON lol. I can only imagine what a crazy frenzied zooooo this place must be during the busy season (and don't intend to find out lol). But in the off season where there was absolutely no line when I walked in (granted it was a weekday around 11AM) I was all for satisfying my rare craving for a Maple Bacon (which in the OBX they refer to as Bacon in the Sun - get it? Cute.) 2 bucks a donut FOR A DUCK DONUT is worth it considering the donuts are MADE TO ORDER, they're fresh and hot (warm) and the zillions of different toppings and glazes they offer are the real-deal and they don't skimp! It truly is a (NOT LOW CAL!!!) sweet (and/or savory) treat. Beware: this is not a grab-and-go donut shop a la Dunkin' - not here. Step into the shop for an "experience" you just really have to take in. This is basically a concoct-your-own donut experience - one at a time, anything goes. If you want, you can create a different combo of glaze and topping for each donut you order. Or, if you don't want the total DD experience (no judging! I get it!), there are some nice conveniences offered: like choosing from Fan Favorite flavors that are their most popular topping combos you can order off the glossy picture menu when you get up to the ordering counter, an assortment option where they choose an assortment of flavors for you or an online ordering option. But know that if you do order in the store, be prepared to wait for your donuts to be HANDMADE. Duck Donuts aren't just for breakfast either. Have them for dessert or a hearty mid day snack! They're re-heatable in the microwave and are THE BEST warmed! A DD with a cup of coffee or, better yet, a tallllllll cold glass of milk. YES! THE NAGS HEAD STAFF IS AWESOME. I didn't realize they were only open until 1pm so I felt like a butthead showing up at 12:50pm, but they were kind enough to brew me some coffee despite the timing! The donut is absolutely where its at, I got the donut with maple icing, bacon, and a caramel drizzle and it was fantastic. Savory, sweet, warm, exactly what was needed on a cold day. The coffee was fine, pretty much Starbucks quality, which isn't surprising seeing as this is a chain, not coffee I'd feel a need to get again. All in all, absolutely a recommendation for donuts, especially with their huge variety, but for coffee I'd stick to finding a more local cafe who will give you something of higher quality taste. read more

When Duck Donuts was first starting to gain popularity in the Outer Banks I wasn't a big fan because cake donuts weren't my thing. But I've really come to appreciate Duck Donuts over the years. Duck Donuts makes one kind of donut - a plain naked cake donut. Then the donut is dipped, sprinkled, rolled, drizzled, glazed and/or frosted to order this every donut is made custom. For something very breakfasty I like a donut rolled in cinnamon sugar and then frosted with vanilla icing. For something more desserty I often go for the chocolate, marshmallow and graham cracker crumbs of the S'mores donut. During COVID I have been trying to place my order online but the website doesn't seem to work so I've been showing up at 7am with my order form. I feel like Duck Donuts is taking COVID seriously and is very organized. They have you fill out your order form outside and then they ask that only one member of your party enter the store to pay. After paying you wait for your order outside, six feet from others of course, and then an employee brings the order out to you. This location is closed on Sundays and Mondays which seems a little odd, especially the Sundays. Also, this season they have been closing at noon which is a bummer but we've been planning accordingly. read more

My husband is usually the donut person, but these donuts were so phenomenal that I wanted more! Sadly they are not open during the week (maybe these are winter hours or winter COVID hours), so we only got to visit once. If I would have paid attention to the store hours, then I would have gone back before they closed to get some for the next day. It is a cute store, and they have tons of merchandise. When you walk in, if you follow the duck feet to the counter, you will be six feet apart. I appreciate them keeping us safe and socially distant. The first unique thing you should know about Duck Donuts is that they only make vanilla and chocolate donuts. You pick which donut base you want, and then you add the icing and toppings to your donut base. Yes, they aren't pre-made with the icing and toppings, but they are made to order. I think this makes them So much more delicious than any other donuts I've eaten. Plus, they have a menu with icing and topping suggestions, but your creativity is your taste bud's limit. You can watch your donuts get made at the Donut Prep station. First, they dip your donut in icing and then drizzling the toppings on. We picked all vanilla donuts as our base. One of our four donuts was maple icing with a Carmel drizzle; another, a Christmas combo, was chocolate icing with a mint drizzle. We always get a lemon if possible, so we got the lemon icing with shredded coconut, and we still love a cinnamon donut too. We were not disappointed with our choices. We only wish we would have ordered more and tried a chocolate base so we could compare them. read more

We stopped here just after 10 am and got our order in just a couple of minutes! The donuts are as fresh as can be and fully customizable--you have a choice of many toppings and sauces. You make your selections on a piece of paper, hand it over to the cashier, wait a few minutes, then enjoy your warm, soft, and utterly delicious donuts. You can also get coffee here. Duck Donuts is good, I'm not going to ruthlessly bad-mouth them. I'm sure the business landscape in OBX is very competitive and the fact that Duck Donuts has multiple locations is so great for them. The thing that sets them apart is that they are fresh and warm when you get them. In my opinion, they must be eaten immediately after purchasing, because after they cool down, they don't taste very good at all. You can reheat them, they put microwave instructions on the box, but they will never be as good as they are when they are fresh. We always try to get Duck Donuts once on vacation, but if we don't get there shortly after they open we skip it, because we really don't find it worth the wait if the line is too long. read more

This is the best donut spot in town. I feel confident in saying that statement because when I searched on yelp, there was Duck Donuts and Dunkin, that's it.
