I went to the Dubuque Mining Company many times growing up in Dubuque, IA area in the 90s/early 2000s. Although is not anything fancy, it was always a very popular place inside the Kennedy Mall great for get togethers with friends and family while even a great place to watch sports. My husband and I recently visited Dubuque Mining Company while visiting Dubuque. This place still has great variety of burgers, sandwiches, and some dinner specials such as sirloin steak at affordable prices! The real reason people come here is for the incredible cocktails! Definitely try their most popular drink the "Cave In" which comes in a giant glass quart mason jar! The Cave in is seriously one of the most delicious fruity cocktails you will ever have giving you a nice buzz which is a mix of Gin, Vodka, Rum, orange juice and six mixers. Since the drinks are delicious but potent I wouldn't have more than two or have a safe way to get home! My husband and I started off with the cheese curds which were okay but it threw me off that the Dubuque Mining Company doesn't make their own restaurant style in house made ranch which I took a star off for. When I asked for ranch they only had Hidden Valley Ranch Packets. As a ranch dressing lover, I honestly judge restaurants on their ranch :) which I love dipping my fries in, eating with other sandwhiches, salads, and cheese curds. We also got the chicken sandwich and the Kinda Reuben burger. Both were a nice portion size and delicious! Our friendly server delivered excellent service by being very attentive! 5 star service. 3 star food. I was traveling through Dubuque on a Sunday evening and looked on Yelp for a local spot to eat. I didn't want to hit up Fast food I wanted a break in my long car ride. I found this neat place and it was worth the stop. It is attached to the front if a shopping center and has ample close parking. For a Sunday night it was decently busy with every booth full and people at the bar. It's very dark inside but that goes with the "mining" theme as gold pans and lanterns were the decor as of you were in a gold mine. My waiter was excellent. I asked him if he had any recommendations for someone's first visit. He said the burgers were what most people came for. He said he's worked there for 5 years and eats everything on the menu. That tells a lot about the management at this establishment to have a 5 year employee in food service is a rarity. I ordered the western burger with fries. My drink was served in a huge mason jar which was pretty cute. My burger was good. Not great. Wasn't as juicy as I would have liked and didn't wow me. But it was still good. It was cooked a little more on the well done side instead of medium well. But that's ok. The burger was just ok. I wish I could have said it was the best burger ever. But the service was great. He thanked me in the end for stopping in and asked if I enjoyed my visit. I might be back if I drive through Dubuque again. read more

The bacon was razor thin, just enough to fulfill the promise of bacon on the menu. It was served with fries. The fries were hot and not greasy, but nothing special. The bun was nothing to sing about. So, overall, the fries and bun were strictly commercial. If they made it some thick sliced bacon, a sesame seed bun and better fries, they'd have something. Well, here's a local spot...if that's what you're looking for. It was literally the only place within walking distance to our hotel that was still open AND we were car-less. We went for it! The good thing? We walked in 30 minutes before closing with a group of 7 and the server nailed it. The orders correct, the server was pleasant, and it was all pretty fast. That's actually where the good ends. Everything else was typical. I had (according to the menu) the burger that made this place famous. It was the "Combination Burger" and it was not even average. Even though I requested medium, it was fairly dried out. The fries were fine and the price was what you'd expect. Others that had nachos and wings reported similar food...nothing notable at all. The decor couldn't be more dated, actually. It is built into a mall (Remember those!?) and looks straight out of the 80s, or maybe 70s. Also, a little disappointing was the beer selection. There were a couple of locals, but after that lots of Budweiser & Coors. I would like to say I won't be back, but honestly I might be. About 20 minutes after I left, I realized that I forgot my box of food on the table! My boyfriend and I went back to get it, but they had already thrown it away since it had been sitting there for so long. They offered to make me an entire new order for no additional charge. 15 minutes later, we went back again and I had a fresh new burger. Had dinner here with 3 others and we all enjoyed our meal. Started with a drink: The Dynamite - vodka with lemon and raspberry - that went down really easy. Then had deep fried pickles which were pickle spears instead of pickle slices served with ranch. There were plenty in the serving for us four to enjoy. The ranch was a packet of hidden valley. For the main course, I ordered the shrimp dinner which came with an order of fries and a side of coleslaw. The shrimp were lightly batter and crispy. The fries were hot and lightly salted. The coleslaw was creamy and had the right balance of tang and sweetness. The cocktail sauce was a packet of Heinz cocktail sauce. If I could chant something as I enter to Dubuque Mining Company, it would be "OVERRATE!" When I arrived in Dubuque someone told me they had the best hamburgers in all of Dubuque. There is a Burger King across the street, so I doubt the even have the best hamburgers on JFK. They are small, always over cooked, and over sauced. The beer is cheap, and if you happen to be of age, people rave about the Cave Ins and the Blue Lanterns (I think those are the names; I"m not a mixed drink drinker). The service is pretty shoddy. Staffed mostly with college girls whose idea of good service is wearing tight shirts with scooped necklines. They do have some good TVs, and it's not a horrible place to watch a game if you were looking for some cheep beer, but I would avoid the food. They had proudly displayed that they were voted for best Bloody Mary in the DBQ area for a number of years.. Every Friday night we go out for bloodies, and given the reviews and "awards" printed and displayed - one would think we may have hit the mother-load. We were wrong. I'm guessing one of the ingredients is clam juice, which a splash may have been fine - unfortunately mine and boyfriend's tasted the same, clammy. After spending half an hour trying to find a place to eat, we found this place. The online menu looked great but we were less than satisfied. The "1/3 pound before cooking" burgers were nowhere near that when they arrived. I had to open my bun to look for the rest of the meat. There was 1/4"-1/2" of bun around the entire burger that did not have any meat!! My son's was the same way. The burgers weren't anything special and were served on cheap generic buns. The fries were blah. My husband and other son had the cod and it was great while hot. Once it cooled it was really greasy and tasted horrible. We will not be returning! Decided to have lunch at this place. Seating was plentiful and done on your own. The server was very quick with drinks and taking the lunch order. I played it safe with the Cheeseburger and fries. The burger was not very tasty and I had to bury it with ketchup and mustard to consume half of this. Keep Driving! We stopped for lunch and we ordered a burger, Cobb salad, and chicken nachos. For the app we ordered mushrooms. The mushrooms tasted funny and the breading stale. The salad was a bag of shredded salad with sheets of Kraft cheese cut up into pieces no egg, no ham, the lettuce was so wet that when I pour my package of French onto the salad it became soup. Just disgusting! The nachos were stale, maybe 4 small pieces of Chicken, the cheese burnt the burger was fine. As others have said Mining Company has it's (+) and (-). Drink prices are good and "The Cave In" is a good drink and pretty potent too. Atmosphere is pretty mixed as people of young and old seem to come together and have a good time. However, the staff is slow as they talk amongst themselves more than they do with the customers and the sandwiches seem to have gotten smaller. Overall not too bad of a place. read more

This is now one of my favorite spots to eat when I'm in Dubuque. Plenty of televisions to watch a game. A sports bar like atmosphere but not as loud. The fish dinner I had was out of this world! I agree w/Gregg S, one star is way too much. I visited here on a Thursday night because of the drink specials and figured I'd get a bite to eat also. I found a seat at the bar and after waiting 7 minutes (I looked at my watch when I sat down), the bartender finally came over and took my order - Strike 1. After waiting another 15 minutes, the bartender finally remembered that I had ordered a long island iced tea and proceeded to make it but under poured every alcohol which I questioned him on and he told me that "no, I didn't under pour" - Strike 2. My food arrived and I wasn't impressed with the bacon patty that was much smaller than my over cooked hamburger but I was hungry so I ate it - Strike 3. As I was eating, said bartender who made my drink, proceeded to make a Jack on the rocks for someone and not only did he make one complete pour, he made four and I want to know who orders a quadruple Jack on the rocks - Strike 4. Needless to say, I will not be spending my money here at any point in the future and I hope that the bartender enjoyed that 1% tip that he got since his service was so crappy. read more
