I was there today to visit the Manhattan Bagel shop, also looked at the Itri Brick Oven Pizza and the largest business there, Neshaminy Creek Brewery. In the center of it all was a large dining room shared by all. Had I more time and hunger, I would have ordered a pizza and manged it at the bar with local suds to lube the swallow. Maybe, next time. We don't consider ourselves regulars at any particular bar. We like to mix things up. But it's pretty obvious who the Crossroads regulars are -- every time we walk in, there are the same familiar faces. At this point, I'm pretty sure some of them have their own parking spaces. We usually wait until sometime late Friday afternoon to see what the weekend food specials are. That's often what gets us through the door. That, or we're in the mood to listen to some live music. Crossroads consistently has live music on Friday and Saturday nights, which is something we really enjoy. We almost always sit at the bar. We like meeting new people and having conversations, although once the place gets going, it can get pretty loud. Sometimes you're having a conversation and realize you've been smiling and nodding for the last five minutes because you have absolutely no idea what the other person just said. The bar staff is generally friendly and welcoming. Most days, anyway. But we're all human, and sometimes you can tell someone is having one of those days where friendliness apparently isn't on the menu. We get it -- we've all been there. The food has always been good for us. One thing we've noticed occasionally, though, is that what shows up on the plate doesn't always seem to include everything listed in the description. Every once in a while, we'll look at the food and think, "Wasn't there supposed to be bacon on this?" or "Did the sauce take the night off?" Nothing major, but if it's listed in the description, we'd like to see it make an appearance. The mixed drinks can also be a little weak at times. And by "a little weak," I mean sometimes you start wondering if the bartender and the drink had a disagreement before it reached the table. Thankfully, they have the staple draft beers to fall back on. The specialty draft selection could use a little work, though. Overall, we keep coming back, and that probably says more than anything else. Between the food specials, live music, familiar faces, and relaxed bar atmosphere, Crossroads has become one of those places we enjoy stopping into. It's not perfect, but then again, neither are we -- and we've been coming back for years, so they must be doing something right.

For every visit where I've checked in here over the past five years, I've probably forgot to on a 1:1 ratio. I'm somewhere in the ballpark of 40 check ins here, which should give you an idea as to how we feel about DAT. Not a whole lot we haven't seen here over that time. Masks, menu changes, trivia night, music trivia night, brunch, lunch, etc. There are three keys that run throughout. 1. Hands on owner. Nate is very present in some capacity almost every time we're here. Nothing he won't do from seating, bussing, food running to turning the Yankees on a nearby TV for a fellow fan :) 2. The randomness of the music being played. Anything from 60's to 90's rock, occasional R&B, maybe some disco or my favorite from last Wednesday at lunch, Yacht Rock. Nothing goes down smoother than hard cider with grilled cheese and goulash and a side of the Admiral himself, Michael McDonald. Fantastic vibe and hang here every time. 3. The consistency of the menu. The short rib goulash and any of the soup renderings are fantastic. Past that, house made tots, wings, burgers, crab cakes, beef on Weck, links, perogies. It's all so damn good, even though I think the secret weapon is the seafood. Anything done here with crab, shrimp or the seasonal scallop specials are guaranteed winners. I guess to keep 'em honest, if there's one small ding I could bring up it's the pricing. Admittedly, some of the menu offerings are on the higher end of the spectrum but then again, the quality is there and so is the consistency. You get what you pay for. It's a 40-45 minute each way hike to come here and as long as they keep doing what they've been doing here since the beginning, in the immortal words of the prophet Randy Newman: "We're gonna ride it till we just can't ride it no more."
