I used to go to Dubey's all the time back in the day when they were located at Cum Park Plaza in Burlington, NC. I've bought tons of lizard supplies there for my Uros and beardies, and the staff is always friendly and helpful. I bought a yellow Nigerian geyri Uromastyx there when he was about 6 months old, and I still have him, about eleven years later. Happy to report that Oscar is still my pride and joy, and he is the sweetest Uromastyx I've ever had. He is very affectionate, and I am so happy to have him. I've gotten a couple of beardies from there as well. I bred my own bearded dragons for about 12 years, and Dubeys has been part of my my life ever since I discovered lizards about 32 years ago. So sad to share what I saw at Dubey's Pet World today. Two of their unadoptable, and free roam cats have horrible sores on their hind legs. Today I watched the male cat pee and poop in an uncovered animal cage. I noticed these sores on the male orange cat months ago but brushed it off as I thought this would be handled when it clearly has not. I offered to adopt the cats and was denied as "they are happy here." I clearly disagree. The bettas are dying in these small and uncleaned containers. Their birds are so stressed that they are plucking out their feathers and the breeder ones are stuck in small cages. I will never go back, unless it's to save these abused animals. read more

Overall, I feel way better buying here than a big chain. Most of the employees are very passionate and educated about animals. Some of the animals are in small enclosures with multiple animals in them. The fish warranty is short for how much the fish cost. Can look like a hoarding situation but as long as animals are being bought at the same rate dubey's gets them, I don't see a huge issue. If more people shopped at local pet stores instead, things would improve!! read more

My aquarium heater quit working it was a few years old. The fastest way was just to buy local, so I went to Dubeys. I bought a Marineland precision, went home put it in the tank about noon. Set the temp at 73 just to bring may tank temp back slowly. It worked fine brought temp up to 73 and shut off. Later that evening I thought bring it up to 75. I looked at me in tank thermometer around 100deg. The aquarium was cooking, I unplugged the heater and grabbed it by the top. It was super hot like a curling iron. I searched Marineland heaters and found that a previous model had been recalled for the same problem. No worries I figured just bought it the day before. Went back to the store and was told there would be no replacement and no refund, I would have to deal with Marineland. I payed the premium price of 49.99 $ for a heater I could get on Amazon for 25.66 $. I assumed that the local store would be better when problems arise. This was not the case buyer beware and check prices elsewhere. I am now stuck trying to get my money back as I do not want a heater from a manufacturer that has serious issues in the past their stealth heaters were recalled. read more

Listen, I read all these reviews and all I can say is, none of these people know what care is required for animals. Dubeys is run by smart people who hire smart people, they know what they are doing. Y'all are complaining the store smells bad? Uh hello, there's a ton of animals and they clean their cages like every day, it will smell sometimes? People say some cages are too small, but the animals in the small cages are SUPPOSED to be in small cages. If you see an animal that isn't fully healthy, did you ask why? no? I'll answer that! Dubeys takes in any animal people can't take care of. Are you mad at firefighters when a baby is left on their doorstep with scratches? no? because it's not the savior's fault? crazy. And if you are complaining about price, go support your chain pet store like petsmart because we all know they have a perfectly clean record! (sarcasm if you can't read that, and I assume the people writing these reviews can't). I have been going here multiple times a week for years, never once had a bad experience. Everyone is nice. Every animal is completely cared for and nursed back to health if brought to them in not perfect condition. This store is a 10/10 and anyone who says otherwise is just not educated on animal care or their business. It's so sad to see the greatest animal store with the kindest owners and employees get put down like this. I went into the store with my parents to buy a bird to be my ESA for college. All the birds were so cute but I'm a little worried they might not have enough space. I bought a Quaker Parrot and picked him up 4 days later. There are not many Ubers around the area so it was very hard to get a ride back to Elon. Brad, the store manager offered to drive me home. I declined and went to wait outside for my ride. The wind was blowing, it was dark, someone was smoking 10 feet away from me and the cars were zooming. It was all scaring my baby parrot. My ride then cancelled and I had nobody to drive me home. I went back to the store and I got Heather's (an employee) attention so she let me in because the door was locked. I asked if Brad could still drive me home and thank gosh he said yes. I was worried I was going to get kidnapped but Brad was very nice and he said it was the least he could do for buying a $950 bird from the store. Went in with my adult son with autism to help him with the process of purchasing a bearded dragon. (He is fully capable of caring for a pet, I just wanted to make sure he felt comfortable to ask all the necessary questions.). He found one he liked, and an employee took the lizard out and let him hold it for a moment. My son decided to get that one, and the employee whisked it off to place in a box while we looked around. Through the glass of the tarantula cabinet, I noticed one must have escaped its container, and was dead on the shelf. When we got to the register, the employee (who was very friendly) handed us a bag of live crickets. We had been researching bearded dragon diet and care, but I wanted to clarify how many should be fed at a time. The employee told me to open the crickets and dump the entire bag into the beardie's enclosure and that should last her "a few days". This sounded strange to me, so I repeated it back to him and he confirmed it again. (Thankfully before I did this, I googled it when I got home, and found that every source I read warned to never feed beardies this way, as uneaten crickets will bite and gnaw on them.) Before leaving the parking lot, my son took the lizard out to send a picture of her to his sister. It was then we noticed her injured foot. Her toes were smooshed together, flat, dark, and crusty looking. We immediately went back in and showed an employee. He first said she had gotten her foot caught in something in her enclosure "a few days ago" but seemed to be doing fine with eating and walking. He then clarified it happened "weeks ago". I asked if she needed vet care and he said no and said when beardies break toes they won't ever be the same but that it wouldn't hurt them. As a nurse, it looked to me that the toes had lost blood supply because of the injury and were in the process of falling off but he said no and again said they would never look normal because they had likely been broken. It was not offered by the employee that we could choose another one, but my son wanted to keep that one anyway. I asked if she could be brought back if she developed a problem with the foot, and he said only within 3 days. Though she seems to be doing ok, eating/drinking/and reasonably active 2 weeks later, it's obvious I was correct and the toes are indeed going to fall off. The tips are already crusting off. I also have to wonder if loose crickets in her enclosure at the store could have gnawed at her foot when it got injured. I think it was pretty shady that the staff were aware of the injury, yet did not bother to point it out before we bought it.) I am hopeful she will not develop an infection. read more

Honestly it's really sad how any of this is even legal. People really don't care about animals and then profit from their suffering. Aside from the bugs crawling on the walls that escaped the reptile enclosures and the foul smelling dirty cages, the pets there were not being taken care of at all. All the birds were extremely timid, plucking their feathers, and kept in rows of cages with no room to fly and barely enough to move. Plucking feathers is a sign of stress and poor mental health in birds. Some of them were the size of tiny hamster cages and housed multiple medium sized birds. It reminded me of that scene from Rio where the guy kept the birds in cages for animal trafficking/smuggling. The guinea pigs were kept in small enclosures and the rabbits were kept in small guinea pig cages. A cage a little taller than the height of the nightstand housed 3 ferrets so they can't even run around, just move enough to get food. Even the poor tarantula was kept in a tiny box the size of a small kids jewelry box. I don't even like spiders but I felt bad for it. All the animals there had crazy prices that were basically scamming everyone who buys a pet not knowing any better and how much they could save if they just shopped somewhere else (ex. the cockatiels were $500-$600, they normally cost about $150-$250; scarlet macaw was $40,000 might as well buy a new car with that money. Macaws are expensive but DEFINITELY not THAT kind of expensive, that's crazy) I honestly don't even know what kind of responsible pet owner would buy any pets from here, even the price would scare people who aren't animal lovers. My sister started crying on the way home because even she felt bad for all the pets. It was the saddest thing I've ever seen and I still can't believe a place like this actually exists so close to home and has the audacity to call itself a "pet shop" and say they care about animals. There need to be way more regulations on how animals, especially pets, are being treated and sold, this felt so wrong I don't even know how it's legal. I went and spent almost $500 on a fish tank and accessories, the fish tank I bought came with a filter and i started having issues with it. I called the store to ask for help and they were not much help. So i asked if I can send a video of the problem and they gave me a cell #, I sent the video with no reply, I called went straight to voice mail.. I called the store several times and nobody seems to be able To help me. If it wasn't for the salesman Austin, i would have given this store a 1 Star. If you need to buy aquariums or anything expensive I recommend you go to another store. We preordered 3 frontosas from this store. We are experienced aquarium enthusiasts and have owned many fish over the years. When we picked up the fish, there was one that was already dead in their tank. The ones we took home died within an hour of acclimating them to our tank. When we called them, they said their warranty doesn't cover aggressive fish. First of all, that has nothing to do with this situation and secondly, this was a special order. Furthermore, the fish were supposedly ordered just for us. When we happened to go into the store yesterday, the guy helping us told us they were there and "were first come, first serve". We were the ones they were ordered for so why would it then be first come first serve? In addition to this, the employee was vaping in the store, in our faces. As a final note, we've heard and read bad reviews on this store about how they will gladly take your money and not do anything to resolve issues for their customers. I would not recommend this store to anyone and needless to say, they've lost our business. read more

New location, same terrible shop. I recently visited Dubey's Pet World, and left the place in tears. These people seem to care little for the wellbeing of the animals they sell, and don't seem to know what they are doing. None of the rodents had chew toys (rodent teeth are constantly growing, thus the chews to wear them down...otherwise they overgrow and prevent them from eating), bath houses with dust being used as bedding for the chinchillas (you don't leave it in with them, they'll poo in it, and still try to bathe), mice and hamsters in cages sitting in the floor, in easy reach of the shop cat and could easily be accidentally kicked, half of the rabbits and guinea pigs were in cages way too small for them or were in large cages that had too many animals in them, none of the animals had items to provide mental stimulation (leads to boredom, which can lead to chewing on themselves, the cage, or attacking cagemates), at least half of the fish tanks were murky and unclean, most of the snakes and lizards only had newspaper for bedding, and all of the water bottles for the mammals had green algae/mold growing in them (meaning they don't get washed). I'm still horrified by what I saw. read more

Drove 40 minutes to check out the tarantula selection after seeing this was the closest exotic pet store to me. The store smelled strongly of animal feces which is pretty common for a local pet store unfortunately. It definitely had a sketchy vibe-- multiple cats and dogs wandering around, and not super clean. The workers were pleasant and welcomed me in. They had a great selection of tarantulas and reptiles-- it very much surprised me. At least 50 tarantulas of all different species. The girl working recommended me a baboon species immediately, one that is very venomous and aggressive, which was telling. Male and female tarantulas have very different lifespans-- the males only living a month or year at most after they reach their adult size, and the females living up to 25 years. I obviously wanted a female tarantula and inquired about the sexes of them. She said "I just water them" and that another worker who is off today would know more. When you buy an animal it is pretty standard for the sex to be clearly noted for you. I don't understand why this could not have been labeled on the containers where the species names and prices were. The prices were also very high--over half the price they can be found online at reputable sites in some cases. I saw 1 dead tarantula in a cage and 2 tiny dead ones just sitting on a table. I'm sure there were more. I left feeling very disappointed. I understand that pet store employees are not required to be super well educated especially in eccentric pets such as tarantulas. But for a store to be selling 50-100 tarantulas and not even know the sex of any of them or have one person there who has some type of clue about them is another thing. read more

Did months of research to find a proper place to buy my lizard. Wanted to buy from a breeder but due to COVID this was undoable. They sold me a sick lizard with an underlying respiratory infection, due to his homing and husbandry. they had an arid lizard in a gecko tank! with probably 40% more humidity than safe! AND they lied to me about how old he was!!! Told me he was a 7-8 month old juvenile when in reality he is probably only 4-5 months old which will drastically change how i take care of him. Wanted to call for a free refund or return, but how could i? i love him so much already. Am spending hundreds in vet bills to keep him alive. SICK PEOPLE! read more

We got a couple of boy guinea pigs from a big chain pet store a couple months ago. Turned out one was not a boy. Figured that one out when we noticed we had five guinea pigs instead of two. The store we got the original two from took one of the adults back (we looked into getting the Dad neutered but it was going to be between $300-$400) and we kept the babies with their Mom for three weeks. We were worried we'd end up with more babies so we called around to see who would take in the babies. The big chain stores were full but one of them said there was a pet store in Mebane that might. I looked it up online and called and we were welcomed to come on over. Glad we did. Not only were they friendly and take two of the three (we are keeping one of the girls to stay with its Mom), the store is really cool. We'll be making the longer drive to get our supplies from here in the future. And, who knows, maybe another pet down the road. Probably not a tarantula. read more

I've kept most kinds of fish at one time or another and recently got back into planted freshwater tanks. I hadn't been there for a while and was pleased to see they have improved their store a lot, especially in the fish area. The freshwater selection however wasn't very broad and a bit more pricy than I expected but the quality looked very good. The saltwater however looked great. Prices are hard to judge on salt items, the size and rarity of a fish are very important consideration for price. I thought they had a really nice selection. The reef corals were very impressive. They have a great evelated reef tank that makes viewing and selection really easy. The clarity and cleanliness is impressive. They also have a nice coral nursery which, IMHO, allows for newbies and experienced to try different corals with out breaking the bank. I'm a recovering reef tank guy, this place could get me hooked all over again. They are a great local fish store which is a tough business I'm glad they are in my neighborhood. read more

What isn't empty is Dubey's. This is an old-fashioned pet store. A big, big variety of fish. A nice selection of rescued pets for rehoming. You'll be entertained by the parrots. There's a cranky one that even adores me ;-) A very cool coral tank if you have salt-water fish. Great selection of reptiles if you like that sort of thing. The red-slider turtles that have been rescued are entertaining...I love Big Bertha and feeding the goldfish. It's a family pet store experience. There's just something about Dubey's that makes us keep coming back. They genuinely care about the pets--as opposed to PetSmart or PetCo who churn them out for a big profit, not caring if they are healthy or not. Love ya Dubey's! read more

Birds we're in tiny cages that looked like they hadn't been changed in over a week, hamsters were in 10 gallon tanks, and worse of all the guinea pigs and bunnies were left in tiny cages and out of probably 8 only one had any form of shelter. Dubey's pet world is not an enjoyable experience. The employees sit behind the counter and talk amongst themselves while paying customers no attention. The entire building smells like cat pee, which is a result of the cats that roam the building unattended. Their selection is meh at best and that's being generous. I strongly suggest NOT going there. I have had several bad experiences with them, and I will not be giving them another chance. The most recent offense was when my husband went there to pick up goldfish flakes. They didn't have any, so the owner suggested getting tropical fish pellets, insisting that ALL fish love them and it shouldn't be a problem. There was a problem. My smaller fish couldn't eat the food, and as a result it clogged up the filter causing me to change it way faster than I normally would have had to.... The filter was caked with red goo from the food! When I went back to exchange the food, the owner told me it was my husbands fault, because he said you had tropical fish. He said no such thing. Another time when I went to buy a filter for my tank, he tried to tell me a different brand filter cartridge would fit no problem. It did not. Frequently the store runs out of items and the owner talks you into buying something else instead, always reassuring that the item will indeed work. The usually do not. By far the best pet store I've ever been in. Service is great. I own a aquarium and switched from buying all my supplies and fish at PetSmart to only buying from Dubey's. Even if it cost more I will shop here! The owner always makes sure he gets compatible fish in an aquarium and will almost refuse to sell you something that might not work. Great, diverse pet store! Probably the only place in the area that has saltwater, and they're great at it. Brad is always friendly and willing to answer any questions. They have a koi pond with some turtles, which you can feed for a quarter. Daisy the cat is usually lazing around being adorable, and they have a pretty wide selection of reptiles and birds. They also usually have ferrets and rabbits for sale, and other cool "alternative" pets. It's always worth a look around even when you don't plan on buying anything. ;) read more
