Jefferson S. not only knows his food, he knows his tennis - especially his community tennis. One…read moreneed only compare the condition and operation of the "public" courts at the Randy Pate Tennis Center to those at Oak Hollow in High Point or Spencer Love in Greensboro to see how big a difference the operation of a public tennis facilitate makes. Of course, they are able to pull these courts together a couple of times a year if they are hosting a big tournament, but in terms of day to day play by members of the community, this jewel of public tennis has lost its shine. I can only hope that the City of Winston-Salem cares enough to do something about it.

Up until a few years ago (2009?) the Joe White Tennis Center located at Hanes Park was a public community institution that was open to the public for reasonable rates. For whatever reason, the City of WS chose a private company to manage the courts - in this case, the previously Statesville-based Randy Pate Academy. The academy, for all intensive purposes, is a high-end junior tennis factory. On most days, you will see a couple dozen kids running around slapping hundreds of balls in organized workouts. In recent years, it has produced many top-ranked juniors and attracted even more. Unfortunately, for the general community, court availability has gone down, while prices to play have gone up. And if you want to play during hours when the Academy is not running, the courts will be locked up. No more free court time for the neighborhood kids that used to be able to come down to the park and learn the game. Same for the casual tennis player. If you want to play, you will be paying for private-level court fees. These ain't your father's public courts. Whether you support the privatization of a long-time public park or not, calling it the "Joe White Tennis Center" is a mistake. I say remove the sign, and call a spade a spade. It's the Randy Pate (Private) Tennis Academy, located at Hanes Park.

This park is so awesome! The dinosaurs are the main attraction for the kids but as a parent I love…read morethe shade, the state of the art bathrooms and walking trails. It's so nice to have such clean facilities with locks on the door that work properly. Unfortunately so many of the bathrooms at public playgrounds are a disaster but that's not the case here. The picnic benches are close by so if you want to sit and watch your children play you are still within reach. The walking trails go on for miles and are all paved. Great for walking, running, riding bikes or scooters. On the other side of the park there are basketball courts, workout stations, a dog park and a baseball field. This is a great part to consider if you want to reserve a shelter for a party. Everything about this park is beautiful and historic.

There is a bathroom that is close and very clean along with shelters around the park as well. There is a basketball court a bit down and I believe a dog park. There are trails along the park as well. We had a blast. We pack our lunch and make it a fun day at the dinosaur park. If you're thinking to go..go! It's great for families and people just wanting to walk trails.
