Another top notch Japanese restaurant in Truckee. It opens at noon and have enough seating options and great ambience. They have a variety of food options from rice dish, sushi's and noodle bowls. The food is tasteful and the service was great. Highly recommended

Best Sushi in Truckee bar none. Service is always spot on but it's all about the Nigiri here for me. So so Delicious and Fresh. Your paying for the quality but it's well worth it. The Pho is pretty delicious as well. This is not an AYCE restaurant.

Started at the bar... drinks were good. Food was ok. Ordered gyoza, Edamame, & Shrimp Tempura to start. Sadly the gyoza came out with a cold center other 2 were good. Service & outdoor seating was nice. Entrees (Sushi rolls needed some love.) the chicken katsu was good. Bathrooms were clean kitchen just needs a bit of work in terms of quality of food.

Horrible horrible horrible food. Do not come here if you are hungry. Because you are going to leave unhappy. Wish I could rate it less. Shells in my sushi. My Dan Dan noodles were definitely sitting out, waiting for other foods to come out. Soup was lukewarm, noodles soggy. Everything you don't want in a noodle dish. If you have never experienced Japanese food. This is not the place to go to expand your pallet. Best to go to a grocery store if you want some better sushi. Half the price and probably taste better.

The vibe makes you feel like you're not in Truckee. The pace is quick. The focus is on food. The sake is good and the fish is fresh. I recommend ordering for the experience and getting out of the norm. Try something new, let yourself be surprised, enjoy the flavor journey along the way. Oh, and if you like garlic, you CANNOT skip the edamame pictured.

We tried this restaurant in Truckee and honestly I was really disappointed. We got the chef's special sushi plate for market price, and it was $150. It's one thing to pay that much, but as you can see in the photo, it's really not that much food which was extremely disappointing. You essentially get one roll, 6 pieces of nigiri, and a few pieces of sashimi for $150.....not worth it at all in my opinion. The fish was seasoned well and tasted pretty good, but I simply couldn't get past the price. The kitchen was also super backed up so when we were still hungry after the chef's special and decided to order more, it took way too long so we decided to cancel the order because we didn't want to wait. Overall the rest of the food was pretty mediocre as well, and again for that price, I would simply not return here. Just my opinion.

$7 service charge for to go order. Yikes.

Overpriced sushi. Paid almost $60 for 2 miniature rolls. See picture. Almost $8 service fee for to go order and they didn't even inform me of this until I looked at the bill. Waited 30 minutes for order though restaurant was empty.

Tried Drunken Monkey in Truckee and was blown away by the flavor. Everything was bold, balanced, and super satisfying. Service was a tad slow and not super attentive, but the food made up for it. Still definitely worth a visit if you're in town!

Love this place and stop every time I come by I watch all the other great entrées and starters going by everything. Here is great standard Real true Japanese food quality no weird mayonnaise junk all a great spinach dish this morning or today. I just spent much of time in New York in Portugal eating great food but drunken monkey as weird as Name is. It's top top top top sushi spot in the world. If you miss this you missed out I never miss it.

An okay sushi place... the sushi was decent but not the best. There was no nigiri combo or set which was a bummer so you have to order each nigiri separately. Miso soup was definitely a miss and lacked an authentic miso flavor. It was more reminiscent of a chicken soup. I think this sushi spot is decent, but if you're used to more authentic Asian flavors this might not be the spot for you. Service was good and the inside was nice!

let me just start off by saying that this is one of the best sushi spots I've ever been to. As someone who is an avid sushi lover I enjoy going up to Truckee and getting some fresh fish. I recently went there with about 16 teenagers and the staff was incredibly patient with all of us talking about nonsense and trying to split the bill. Their staff was also super efficient and fast because you've ever been around 16 hungry teenagers... It's not a pretty site. not to mention that Truckee is beautiful and this place is no different. The outdoor city is great and sitting aside is also great very pretty.

Really cute vibe with a sushi counter. Didn't expect fresh fish out in Truckee but was pleasantly surprised. Hand rolls (temaki) were so great especially the hotate one. Special rolls were pretty good as well. Not mind-blowing but good for a sushi date night. Good service but can definitely be a little slow when crowds pick up.

The amberjack from the Toyosu market in Tokyo was also top notch. 22% automatic service charge, but you can change it or ask them to take it off the bill. The miso soup had a fair taste and was very light on the tofu, green onions and greens. The salad dressing also had a fair taste - nothing extraordinary. We ordered the nine piece sashimi. The salmon was fresh and tasty. The tuna was also fresh and tasty, but it had a green sauce on top that we both did not care for. The Hamachi was ice cold and tasteless. The best roll was a baked roll with crab and avocado and lobster on top. It was absolutely delicious. The Carnation roll was crab and avocado wrapped in tuna and salmon with tobiko and a tempura scallop on top of each cut roll. The roll itself was average, but the warm tempura scallop on top was delicious! The sauce was a spicy mayo and Unagi sauce. We did like the fact the rice was rolled thinner on the rolls. The menu had a great variety of appetizers, sashimi, sushi rolls, and specialty rolls. There were also Korean dishes that looked yummy. There were seven of us, three children, and the restaurant was busy, so we expected a wait. My friend and I, both in our late 40s, decided to grab cocktails at the bar while our dates stayed with the kids. We asked the hostess where we could go, and she specifically directed us to another bar toward the back because it was less busy. We followed her directions. As we walked toward the other bar, a female employee with dark hair, an arm sleeve tattoo and a sushi roll in her hand stopped my friend and asked, "Where are you going?" He explained we were going to the other bar. She then asked, "Did someone tell you to go to that bar?" He replied, "Yes." That was absolutely true. The front staff had just directed us there. The interaction was odd enough that we wondered why she seemed concerned about two customers simply going to a bar we had been told to use. We eventually found the second bar in a small, dimly lit room behind a sliding door. We were talking about the strange interaction when that same woman walked in and turned out to be one of the bartenders. My friend said, "Hey, glad to see you again." She clearly didn't seem amused. We ordered two Old Fashioneds for ourselves and cocktails for our dates. She asked, "So you guys just want lemon drops or Old Fashioneds?" We explained the Old Fashioneds were for us and the lemon drops were for our dates. She then told us she couldn't make the drinks for our dates because California law required her to see IDs for everyone. Fine. We ordered only the Old Fashioneds and planned to have our dates order their own drinks. The strange part? After telling us she needed IDs, she never carded either one of us. She made the Old Fashioneds without asking what bourbon we preferred. After what seemed like a very long preparation, she handed them to us. She asked my friend, "What do you think?" He replied, "It's OK." She responded, "It's just OK?" He again said, "It's OK." She appeared frustrated and said, "Well, people compliment this drink all the time, but if you want me to make another, I will." I tried mine and agreed. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't particularly impressive either. The hot, charred orange wheel and sugar were not what I would consider ideal for an Old Fashioned. We got our bill and returned to our dates. Later, our dates went to the bar themselves. Their experience was completely different. They said the same bartender was friendly and welcoming and made them excellent drinks. She even made two new Old Fashioneds for us on the house. To her credit, the second drinks were considerably better -- properly prepared with an orange peel twist and a much better balance of sweetness and bourbon. We were told they were made with "top shelf" bourbon. We also learned that the bartender was apparently the assistant manager. Our table server later mentioned that this wasn't the first time she'd heard complaints about that particular manager's service and attitude. I want to be fair: our table server was excellent, and the food was delicious. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Prices are on the higher side and the dishes came out somewhat randomly, but the food itself was very good. I don't have a problem with the restaurant's style, tattoos, piercings, or atmosphere. That's simply their vibe. What bothered me was being treated as though we shouldn't be going to an area we had specifically been directed to by the hostess, followed by an extremely uncomfortable interaction with the bartender. I've had drinks in bars all over the world, and I've rarely experienced a bartender who made me feel so unwelcome when we had done absolutely nothing wrong. We were simply two middle-aged guys, dressed nicely, trying to grab drinks for ourselves and our dates while waiting for our table. Maybe it was a misunderstanding. Maybe she was having a bad night. I honestly don't know. But being questioned with "Did someone tell you to go to that bar?", then told IDs were required for everyone, only to have neither of us actually carded, left us scratching our heads. When the person creating that experience is an assistant manager, that's particularly concerning. Good food. Great table service. But an incredibly strange and uncomfortable experience with the assistant manager that overshadowed what otherwise could have been a very enjoyable evening. P.S. The assistant manager/bartender made us feel as if she thought we might be officers undercover or that we had some reason to be there other than simply having drinks. I am a 24-year Air Force retiree, and my buddy is a highly decorated Marine retiree with a Purple Heart. We just wanted a couple of drinks for ourselves and our partners, something we do everywhere in California without unnecessary conflict.

Parking is fairly easy, with plenty of street spaces nearby, and an easy walk if you're already hanging around the neighborhood. The service was friendly and fairly prompt, and even for a weekday night the place was bustling, leading to a bit of a backup. Cool vibes all around, and it's neat to sit at the bar and watch the chefs do their thing. Though it does mean this is a little bit on the noisy side. Look at the menu, and there are tons of tempting options. As the name suggests, their specialty here is small plate off the grill or out fo the fryer. But they do serve really good-looking ramen, too, which I will make not to try next time I swing by. I at first went with a quick bite of grilled chicken thighs, which were just amazing! They were juicy, eprfectly seared, with some grilled green onions and an amazing sweet soy sauce. I also went with the yakionigiri, which are balls of rice that are grilled, brushed with sauce, and topped with a sort of mango slaw. A bit uncommon, but wow, these were also just so delicious! Also had a glass of sake, though they have a full bar should you want some other sort of beverage. Prices here are, I feel, a little on the higher end for small plates. However, I think it is definitely worth coming and trying this place out at least once or twice, just to expereince some of the good food. I'm sorry it took me so long to finally step through the doors, but I am certain I will be back again to try more of what's on the menu.
