Lorraine Campground at Harold Parker State Forest is one of the best camping locations in Mass.,…read moreespecially if you want to be in the woods and yet be close to civilization. The ~4000 acre forest has a dedicated entrance to the campground with several rangers assigned to it. The sites can be extremely spacious and isolated or be smaller and more social. It really is your choice. Safe swimming, fishing, bike riding, and hiking are abundant. The educational programs are posted, including weekly hikes, bike rides, and fishing lessons (they provide everything for novices). They even have a bonfire on Sat. nights during the camping season. The bathrooms are cleaned daily and are typically in excellent condition, including free showers and hot water. A donation is requested for the mandatory kiln-dried firewood ($5/bundle or $10/3 bundles). All sites have potable water. No sites have electricity. Alcohol is prohibited (and this is posted prominently). People who get caught drinking (typically because they are obnoxious) are asked to leave immediately. The state police barracks is just down the road, so help is nearby if others get rowdy. It is amazing to really be in the woods so close to Boston. Booking a site in advance online is highly recommended; walk-ins/drive-ups are permitted if there is space available. The fees are extremely reasonable ($12/night).

Beth took us from end to end in the town and filled our day with amazing stories and facts that brought the history of the city to life for us. Seriously - don't do this city without a guide. You will only get a sliver of the history. We now have a greater understanding of how the literary history tied in with the military history. Beth was great teaching us about what we already knew, should have known, and never would have guessed. I left feeling much more informed and jonesing for a good read! Don't skip any of these tours!

It has snacks and drinks to buy, most of those are local too. The fudge, cookies, coffee cakes and chocolate dipped Oreos are fantastic. There are no full meals or sandwiches though. Just goodies and cheese. They have all the visitor center brochures too. In the fall they will give you apples from their apple trees. When they are open you can use their composting toilets. The bathrooms are always clean and looked after. They have a special shorter commode for children and there are cute paintings on the wall. The bathrooms used to be open 24 hours unattended but I think the of epidemic and insurance liability probably put an end to that. When the main building is closed there are portapotties and a kiosk with vending machines. There is a fenced in pet exercise area and seating outside and some covered areas to sit. It's a solid highway stop. It would be great if it were open past 5, but it's a nice place to stop when it's open and at least has necessary things available when it's not.

They had a basket of freshly pick macintosh apples to take and eat as a giveaway from a random farm. It was so fresh and delicious. We have lived in Colorado for nearly 50 years and we never get Macs out there. But I grew up in New England and Macs were my favorite. Was filling out a postcard that would go to another visitor of this historical house. And I would receive one from someone I did not know that visited. It's a small donation of four dollars and it really made , the visit fun. Other things I liked about the house with the grounds. There's a neat grinding stone on the property outback, that you would miss unless you really looked for it with the tag. It's an early Native American grinding stone. Also, the flowers were in bloom, peonies, roses, salvia . Perennials in an herb garden. I like that the fruit trees are on the property as well. If someone I knew wanted a venue for a party or a wedding, I would ask them to consider this property. All in all a lovely place to be in the city.
