When I moved to Madison, I searched for a place that I would enjoy getting my haircut--one that…read moregave quality service, personal attention, and was affordable. After several poor haircuts (and even resorting to going back to my stylist in Rochester, NY while in town visiting), a friend recommended Essentials to me. Above and beyond my expectations! This is a small place with 2 stylists, Jen (the owner) and Holly. Both are great! The first time I went there, Jen cut my hair. I wanted a new look, so I brought in a picture of what I wanted my hair to look like. She cut my hair EXACTLY like the picture! Perfect! Holly cut my hair the last 2 times. She also does a wonderful job. I got so many compliments on my last 2 haircuts! Another friend liked my hair so much that she switched salons to go there and get her hair cut. She loved it too, and her hair looked great. A word about scheduling in light of another review. Neither I nor my 2 other friends that go to Essentials have had a problem with scheduling an appointment within a reasonable amount of time. If you want a coveted evening appointment, you should call a few weeks ahead. But if you're flexible with the time, it's not a problem. For example, for my last haircut, I called on a Tuesday evening to book and had an appointment on Friday morning (the first available appt. was Thursday). I would highly recommend Essentials to anyone looking for a great haircut!

And then she did exactly what we discussed. I booked my next appointment before leaving. It's a small shop but advance appointments are highly recommended. Don't wait till the last minute and expect to get in on short notice! I learned and will always book in advance going forward.

I share this- if you're trying to gradually move back to a brunette- this probably isn't the right salon. Below are photos after the initial service, after the correction (photos after initial service were shared with salon), and the inspiration photo. I reached out to Rooted Culture regarding my correction for advice and was told "we're not a good fit". The person delivering this message was very nice- but not what I expected. While I agree, it's left me to navigate the aftermath alone. I had a consultation with Charlie regarding what I wanted to accomplish, reviewed pinterest photos, etc. I brought a singular inspiration photo to the service appointment. I was candid about the over highlighting of my hair historically and my desire to get back to a brunette with highlights vs dark blonde with highlights (which is where I started). When my hair was dried- 1/2 of my head had more highlights than the other half. There were chunky very bright blonde pieces at the front and the distance from scalp to initial highlight was very long. I mentioned the dark roots and uneven highlights, but I slept on it. I called back to correct on Wednesday. They fit me in the following Monday- awesome. I should have slowed this appointment down- so we were on the same page. Because I was slotted between clients, it was rushed. Charlie started adding low lights- I mentioned focusing on the bangs because that was my greatest concern- the heavy contrast. Charlie then started to ask me what we should do- I told her I didn't know. a gloss was suggested. Ok sure. Charlie showed me some hair swatches- "which one?" She recommended not going below a 7, but again I told her I don't know. I'd like my hair to be more blended vs high contrast. So she mixed a 9 and 8 (was that the right choice-idk- my head was in a wash bowl). So the gloss stayed on for 4songs- 12-15mins, but was applied to my whole head vs just the bang area. I mentioned that to Charlie that I thought we were only applying to bang area., she mentioned wanting the color to be consistent. End result is the dark hair color in the photos. Again not the end of the world or blue, but nothing like the inspiration photo or my expressed desire to keep some dimension.

I wanted a spur of the moment haircut and chose to make an appointment at Duncan Edward with TK…read morebased on positive Yelp reviews, and I was completely blown away by TK and the new haircut that he gave me! TK was so friendly and genuine, and really listened to what I was asking for. I admit I did a horrendous job explaining what I wanted but he looked at the pictures I had of what I liked and seemed to know exactly what I wanted and he gave me a beautiful new haircut that I am absolutely in love with!! I also very much appreciated that I was able to make an appointment online, for the very same day. Usually I have to wait several days, if not a week, to schedule an appointment with my usual hairdresser. I'm feeling very conflicted now because I've been going to the same hairdresser for several years, but I enjoyed my first experience at Duncan Edward with TK so much that it's going to be hard not to go back!

I have been going to Duncan Edwards on and off for years and have been satisfied with the results…read moreuntil my last visit. I scheduled a full head of highlights and half way through Aaron told me he was only doing a partial. I trusted his "expert" advice and went with it. When he finished the partial he showed me the front and it did not look too bad. However he did not take the time to show me the back. When I got home I checked the back in the mirror and it looks terrible LOL! No wonder he didn't show me the back!!! The front of my head is highlighted and the back is brown!!! I'm now an official freak! I'm going back to have it "fixed" and I will update the review afterwards. Fingers crossed :P I do not recommend it to anyone, unless you want to be a freak like me. Cheers! So I went back at 10:45am which was agreed upon verbally with Aaron. However, when I went back they told me that it was 12:45pm. I was fine with it, but when I asked to be given a card to have proof of the the time the front desk attendant told me she couldn't. So I insisted since I did not want to have to deal with the time being "wrong" again and eventually she prints the appointment details out. So I leave and come back at the updated time and Aaron and I start to argue about my hair. Basically he would not apologize and admit that he jacked up my hair. So he says it's best if I leave and get a refund. Which is fine by me. But then right before I leave he says that I was rude to the front desk attendant and calls me disgusting. Wow! I did't say anything rude to the front desk attendant I just insisted on receiving a card for the appointment so I would NOT have to keep coming back at the "wrong" time. No idea what he was talking about. But he is disgusting and this business is abusive. I would't recommend Duncan Edward European Hair Design to my greatest enemy.

At first impressions I liked the cut, but once I got home I realized the layers on either side of my face were uneven. Nothing that can't be hidden with a good side part, but not ideal. Price was great! What took it down to 3 you ask? The hair on the floor...and the vanity....and the chair...that wasn't mine. I get that they want to get through as many customers as possible and decrease wait time, but I'd gladly wait 5 minutes if it meant a clean work station. Also, none of the styling tools came out of sanitizer, which made me glad I was my stylists first customer.

Out of concern for the health of my stylist I mentioned that I had been sick over the weekend and asked if they had a mask I could wear. In fact I no longer had any symptoms and they wouldn't have known anything if I hadn't volunteered the information. I was immediately ejected. I left without any resistance but was understandably upset at having my time wasted in this way. When I indicated they had just disincentivized me to ever mention it again in a future situation I was told never to come back and that I was disgusting...3 times. I acknowledge I responded with some less than polite words. I'm not perfect. Having acknowledged that...is there really any circumstance when it is appropriate for a customer to be told they are disgusting and never to return? Is it appropriate for them to escalate the situation in this way? The person in question was manning the front desk at1 pm on May 27.
