Ended up giving the hotel restaurant a chance despite the 3.5 rating. Was very pleased with our experience! Our food was pretty good Salmon was an amazing recommendation The braised short rib was a little disappointing. Flavor did not penetrate the meat so it felt bland. The wine sauce was very subtle. But the mash potatoes were good. The Ahi Tuna tostadas definitely had really good flavor! The cheesecake was good paired with a cup of Americano. The price did feel on the high side for the portion size and quality, but I think we're really just paying for the convenience. Wasn't very busy, service was attentive. We stopped in at DRIFT at the Hyatt Regency with a group of six and overall had a decent experience. We were seated right away, and our server was very nice, attentive and polite throughout the meal. The food came out at somewhat different times, but nothing unreasonable, and she did a good job checking on us. The food itself was okay. My Caesar salad could have used a little more dressing, although I could have asked for more, and the flatbread was pretty good, maybe a little better than average. What brought the experience down for me was the price and the way the charges were presented. Two drinks, a flatbread and a salad came to around $80. There was also a surcharge described as helping defray the cost of minimum wage, plus an 18% service charge added to the bill. We were a party of six, although we had separate checks, so it's possible the 18% was related to the size of the group. Either way, I'd rather a restaurant simply build its operating costs into the menu prices instead of adding extra surcharges at the end. And in this case, our server actually deserved a good tip, I probably would have given her 20% because she did a very good job, but I still prefer having that choice rather than having it automatically added. Good service, decent food, but for me the overall value wasn't quite there. read more

The only thing good about this restaurant is that it's conveniently located in the hotel. That's where the pros end. The one table that was available was in the back corner which was not an issue except the chair AND the table were both wobbly. That made it interesting to try to eat. The service was very slow. Like unnecessarily slow. It took forever for my food to come out and once it did they brought it to the wrong table. Then it took about 30 minutes for my one scoop of Gelato to come out. I had to ask about it twice. While I was waiting for the Gelato they tried to drop off someone else's food to me. I had the korean wings and truffle fries. The fries were great because how could you possibly mess those up. The wings were covered in so much sauce and after the first wing I found why. The wings were overcooked and hard to eat. Friends visiting from out of town and are staying at Hyatt Regency Aventine. we enjoyed our time here, the food was decent / good. not a whole bunch of choices on their menu. What was really the best part of all was the server we had. i cannot remember his name but he sure had us laughing the entire time. I think he said he had just graduated maybe a year or two prior but he wanted to get a job with the PD as a homicide detective. i truly hope that happens for him, because he was so awesome! He told us all about going out to clubs, drinking far too many red bull and vodka and then having dance off's with other people on the dance floor! oh my gosh SO funny! i can't even describe the way he told us these hilarious stories but he is so great! we told hi. that he'd better calm down on all that madness if he wanted to be a csi type detective, cause of those cops ever came onto the club seeing him dancing all crazy, i don't think that would have worked out for him! I was in La Jolla recently for a work meeting, and stayed at the Hyatt Regency. As I had a few hours to kill before meeting up with colleagues, I decided to enjoy lunch in DRIFT eat + drink while watching one of the NFL playoff games. I went right up to the bar where I found that the servers/bartenders were ready and prepared to answer my many questions about food dishes and drinks. First, I ordered the La Jolla Burger (grass-fed beef patty, bacon, and jack cheese on a Hawaiian bun). I left off the avocado. It came with regular French fries. The burger and the fries together were delicious! I would certainly order them again. To drink, I ordered a Drift Signature Cocktail. I chose the Passiontini (Kettle One Vodka, passion fruit liquor and puree, pineapple juice, served with a champagne floater). I was told a few minutes later that they were out of passion fruit puree. I instead ordered a strawberry margarita. Originally, I was brought a smaller glass which was quite strong, so they placed it into a taller glass with more juice added, and that was perfect! I really enjoyed it though I am now curious what the Passiontini would have tasted like. You can make a reservation on Open Table or their website (https://www.driftlajolla.com). I had no issue going right up to the bar as I headed there shortly after they opened for lunch at 12 noon. They are opened Monday through Thursday from noon until 11 PM, Friday and Saturday from noon to midnight, and Sunday from 10 AM until 11 PM (with brunch menu until noon). They have menus for lunch, dinner, bar, Sunday brunch, and Valentine's Day. Customers can self-park in the Hyatt Regency La Jolla parking garage to receive up to 3 hours of validated parking. I also was intrigued about events in the space including the upcoming Baja California Wine Event on February 6. They are inviting anyone to sign up online for a complimentary tasting event featuring Michelin-starred Chef Roberto of Valle in Oceanside pouring his signature wines, alongside other unique selections from Baja California. Drift totally surprised me, in the best way. Came in not really knowing what to expect from the menu, but it turned out to be a genuinely great experience from start to finish. The staff was super friendly, welcoming and impressively quick. We ordered the Pretzel Sticks, Tuna Tostadas, and the Arepa, and every single dish delivered. Hmmm. Mixed feelings. Great potential. This is the main restaurant in the Hyatt Regency and a convenient stop after a long day. So - first - the server Serg and his team were pleasant, attentive and consistent in delivering a solid dining experience. The setting is nice - with both indoor and patio options. I chose the patio for both visits and was pleased with the seating, the soft music and the overall vibe. The food on my first visit was disappointing. I had the New York Strip Steak with potatoes and asparagus. The vegetables were fine, but the steak was a terrible, gristle-laden cut of meat. I ended up leaving most behind and calling it a day. The food on my second visit was much better. I chose the Chile-Lime Salmon which had a pleasant avocado-mango and passion fruit relish to bring the flavor home. It's served with a quinoa-rice mix which was nicely balanced. I wish my first visit had been this pleasant. I did have a berry sorbet to finish the second meal and found it pleasantly intriguing. The consistency was almost crumbly (think ice) with very berry-forward flavoring. I enjoy sorbet and found this one a perfect complement to my meal. read more

I cannot see a person visiting DRIFT if you are not staying at the Hyatt. It doesn't have a draw. If you are staying at the hotel and would like a quick drink or prefer to stay close for dinner, it is just an OK choice. I will be honest, however: even if I stay here again, I would not visit DRIFT for a meal. First, I must say that the service is very good. The team is attentive, helpful and kind. I was surprised at the level of service. But it did not make up for the food. I am going to endorse the mango margarita, and the martini is OK. But the food. Oh my. The burger is so uninteresting, and the salmon was flavored with entirely too much citrus that it nearly ruined the dish. The risotto was a bit dense and seemingly undercooked. The empanadas were an exciting addition to the menu, and the exterior was perfectly cooked. But the interior seemingly had only potato -- any other flavor or taste of cheese as advertised was lacking. I will say, however, that the fries were spectacular. Very good. The ambiance is just OK. You are seated in the parking lot, with a green barrier between you and the guests who are coming and going. So the patio doesn't lend itself to too much romance. The inside can be busy and bustling, with TVs set to sports. Again, the front of house team is wonderful here. But the food and overall ambience are not worth the time or the cost. read more

This restaurant was so alluring. The space is so beautiful and the ambiance is amazing. They had live music, which was pretty cool. Even though it was too cold for the patio, it looked like such a great spot for when it's warmer out. The service was a little underwhelming, and a bit slow at times. We were the only table in the restaurant, but it seemed to pick up when we were leaving. The food was almost inedible, which was sooo disappointing. We started with the Hummus, which lacked any sort of seasoning. My biggest issue was that it was topped with regular black olives, instead of traditional green or even kalamata olives. It just seemed weird. We also ordered some extra pita, which was $5. The $5 is fine for an additional side, I just have a pet peeve when servers don't mention an additional charge. I got the Chorizo Flatbread for my entree, and the dough was similar to cardboard. The tomato sauce wasn't warm and the cheese had oregano piled on top. Not great. My mom got the Brown Butter Cavatelli Pasta, and it was alright. Not anything crazy. A good portion though. I think if we stay at the Hyatt again, we'll have to try some off campus restaurants! Ambiance was amazing - They had a fire pit and vertical fire lamps and overall really nice lighting. Comfortable seating and just a nice vibe to it. We wanted to stay past midnight so they told us we could go downstairs to the courtyard without drinks after midnight. That place was really lovely as well. We ended up having a nice evening chatting with good conversation and staying up to 2:00 a.m.! Drinks were also really nice. We just had a dirty martini... no blue cheese olives and my friend had a vodka soda. We tried the pretzels with cheese dip which came as 3 long soft pretzel loafs with both a cheese and mustard dip. Very good. My martini was fabulous too. It was a good place to talk and catch up. Not much atmosphere or liveliness though. We spent the night here at Hyatt Regency La jolla. We actually went over to Salt and Lime at 830p.m. to grab a bite to eat before checking in. They were closed! I discovered that many of the bars and restaurants in LA Jolla close at 9p.m. on a Friday night! After checking into the hotel, I was pretty hungry. We happened to find Drift on our way to the hotel elevator. It is a trendy bar vibe. I like their outdoor seating. They have 2 fire pit tables. The menu was surprisingly good and the prices were reasonable got a hotel bar. I got the Ahi tuna tostada, which was an explosion of flavors. I wished there was more of it. It was good. The waitress was great. She said it was her favorite, and if I didn't like it, I could return it. She said she's never had anyone return it. She's right. It was good. My hubby got the shrimp taco, another one of the waitress's recommendations. It was good, but I felt like it was small, too small with not enough filling. Everything about our meal at Drift was impressive. Although it is located in the Hyatt La Jolla, it is clear that they have spend considerable resources focusing on serving delicious food with fresh ingredients, providing outstanding service, and creating a really lively and fresh decor. There are many seating options, my favorite of which was the outdoor patio dining area. It has fire pits, cozy seating, festive lighting and is very inviting. If you are just planning on grabbing a drink, there's a great bar area, and bar service was exceptional. They have two new seasoned chefs, and it shows. Every dish was plated beautifully, and tasted incredible. There were some absolute standard dishes on the menu like the shrimp empanadas - absolutely, positively, you must get them. Steak was cooked perfectly, the desserts were 10/10, beef short ribs and ahi tostadas - overall the meal was well priced and extremely delicious. Stayed at the Hyatt the restaurant is located in, and the restaurant staff could take a couple lessons on customer service from the housekeeping/maintenance/event staff of the hotel (the event staff puts on WONDERFUL parties!) The restaurant has incorrect hours displayed on their website, the hotels website, Yelp and open table. I was told after making a reservation for later at night I was told via an open table message last call for food was 9:45. (This was 2 weekends ago and you can still make reservations on open table for up to 11:30pm for Sundays, their website and Hyatt's say closing is 11pm on Sundays). The staff was very rude and snarky within earshot of us, never came to check on the food (which thankfully tasted okay but I was VERY nervous about eating based on the attitudes of the staff). So if you have a later flight or an emergency don't count on them being open for the advertised hours. Which for a hotel restaurant is VERY weird. (I bartended for Marriott for years, myself and the kitchen were NEVER cut early because that's not the nature of a hotel restaurants business) Probably wouldn't stay at this property again. read more

The waiting staff were nice but it took over 30+ minutes for our food to come out. My husband had to ask for our waitress to check on our food and to at least have the appetizer (Truffle fries). The table in front of us came in 20 mins after and had received their food already so we were confused as to why the appetizer it self took so long. By the time our server brought our food out, the fries were stale which meant, it was already ready for quite some time. The entrees themselves were good but for a $100+ tab, the service was just so disappointing. We sat at the bar and the bartenders were very nice. Craft cocktails: On point! I was very pleasantly surprised with my South Side. A very delicious gin cocktail, served up, reddish because of the angoustura bitters. Looked like a cosmo, but much less sweet and a whole lot more well-balanced. An excellent cocktail. Chicken flatbread: decent, and on happy hour special 3-6 Superfood salad with salmon: This was not that exciting. The salad was bland and the "sustainable" salmon tasted bland too. Dessert: chocolate mousse free with Yelp check-in and an entrée: bonus! Very tasty (brownie brittle was yum). You get 3 hours validation when you dine at Drift in the self parking garage. Super convenient. Happy hour prices are reasonable. We didn't drink, and concentrated on food items. My friend and I decided to split the shroomy flatbread for $12 on happy hour, and the Drift nachos for $10 on happy hour. Both were great for sharing and we even had leftovers between the 2 of us. The flatbread had a bit too much blue cheese for me, although the mounds of mushroom was really tasty. The nachos always finds comfort in my stomach and was very filling. Service was good, although we had to ask a couple times for drink refills. We came on a Monday and it was fairly busy. There are indoor, outdoor patio, and bar seating available so there are options for groups or individuals to dine alone. The only caveat of this place is that it does get loud. We felt we had to raise our voices just to have a conversation and it was hard to hear what we were saying to one another. I stayed overnight at the Hyatt Regency for a family wedding a couple weeks ago and ended up at Drift at 10:30 for a little late-night snack with my husband, my brothers, and their girlfriends. The place was pretty empty on a Saturday night--I guess it doesn't have a super active bar scene despite being the hotel's main bar--but I found it calm and pleasant rather than depressing or dead. I think it helped that the decor was attractive, hip and modern. Service was solid, too. We sat at a high table and were able to order from a server, who attended to our needs. Everyone else was drinking, and they seemed to enjoy what they ordered--I think Drift has beer and wine as well as a decent selection of cocktails. I just ate with them, digging into the Drift nachos and the pepperoni flatbread, both great, greasy snacks for 10:30 on a Saturday night. The nachos were satisfying and delicious, a mess of corn chips, braised chicken, Oaxaca and cheddar cheese, pickled red onion and jalapeño, pico de gallo, guacamole, and crema. The flatbread was fine. It was the cop-out pizza kind of flatbread, nothing special but perfectly edible, with pepperoni, four-cheese blend, and oregano. I liked Drift and would definitely recommend it if you're staying at the Hyatt Regency, especially if you're not in town to explore La Jolla. The service was pretty slow and the waiter kept trying to explain that the kitchen had to prepare each individual meal separately because we ordered separately, which made no sense. I usually do Trulucks or Flemings so it was neat to try a different restaurant at this hotel. Later on I went out on the patio to for dinner and it was awesome taking advantage of the Happy Hour Deals. The ambiance and decor outside is beautiful and we were posted up right by the fire-pit. DRIFT eat + drink a *New American* restaurant and bar located in the Hyatt Regency Hotel in La Jolla / University City area of San Diego. It looks like DRIFT about a year ago in Q4 2016. I was introduced to to DRIFT with 2 Yelp Elite friends, and I love it! I'm usually not one to comment on atmosphere, but I love the vibe there. According to their website, it is inspired by natural beauty and surf culture of the Southern California Coast with both indoor and outdoor seating. My friends and I sat outside by the fire-pit for Happy Hour. According to their website, they also have no fried foods and variety of gluten free, vegetarian, and vegan options. Between my friends and I, we ordered their craft cocktail that day (mules) and tried the following flatbreads: - Margherita - fresh mozzarella, 4 cheese blend, heirloom tomato, and basil - Shroomy - roasted mushrooms, goat cheese, parmesan, pinenuts - Bistro - braised all natural short ribs, white cheddar, picked red onion, thick cut potato chips - Chocolate dessert - chocolate pot de creme, milk chocolate, mouse, ganache, whipped cream, smoked salt brownie brittle Loved everything I tried. Located at the lobby level of the Hyatt Regency. A fine choice for happy hour which is from 4-7PM daily. All Shares and Flatbreads are $10 during this time and they also have a Craft Cocktail of the day at $8. On the evening I went with some Yelp gal pals, we did so choose to indulge on the aforementioned. The flatbreads were great! Very thin indeed making for a scrumptious, but not overly stuffing meal. The *Shroomy* was the favorite of my night -- very savory with choice ingredients of roasted mushrooms (of course), goat cheese, Parmesan, and pine nuts. The *Margherita* was fresh and very Mediterranean, while the *Bistro* was very meaty and wholesome. The cocktail of the day was a mule with cranberry juice (I believe) and easily was invigorating although not very strong. We sat in the beautiful patio area at a fire pit and service was prompt. Only gripe was that closing out our bill took 20 minutes too long. No matter, very aesthetically pleasing restaurant with an awesome HH, so overall I was pleased! read more

Drift is a new upscale casual lounge with a beachy SoCal vibe on the lobby level of the La Jolla Hyatt Regency. Happy hour takes place between 4-7pm. You can get 2-hour validation for self parking. During happy hour you can get all Shares and Flatbreads for $10, Draft Beer for $5, Cocktail of the Day for $8, and all wine by the carafe are $4 off. I came with a group of friends on a Thursday afternoon for happy hour and really enjoyed my experience. David provided us with amazing service during our time at Drift. We ordered a handful of carafes, the Cali Meat + Cheese, Seasonal Hummus (olive this season), Baked Chicken Wings, along with the Smoked Salmon, Bistro, and Salami Flatbreads. I highly recommend the Cali Meat + Cheese during happy hour. Best deal. Delicious jam, variety of meat, cheese, dried fruits and nuts, and a nice crusty bread. It went perfectly with the carafe I shared with my friends. Of all the Flatbreads, the Smoked Salmon one was probably my favorite. Great new place for happy hour in the area! read more
