We probably should have ran at this point. We had a quote from Johnson Brothers Construction to rebuild our shower that had a leaking drain. Their quote was very competitive ($10k + tax) and they seemed knowledgable enough, so we went with them, aware that things might go over the quoted amount given that every projects has unknown. We did have some unforeseen things happen, requiring an extra day of labor to strengthen the floor and some weirdness about the existing drain setup that was taken care of by a plumber in an hour. Yet, here we are, two months later with a total bill that is well over twice the quoted amount, a tiling job that is sub-par and a lot of finishing touches are still missing. When you hire a general contractor, you expect them to guarantee some level of quality and to advocate on your behalf with subcontractors. In our case, the tiling subcontractor not only did a horrible job, but also tried to increase the cost for some work we already sign-off on and way over ordered one of the types of tiles (that we had to pay for). In the end the subcontractor fixed as much as they could short of redoing the whole floor, but we were the one fighting for it and inspecting the work. JBC just stood by. JBC also had two subcontractor give us quote for some drywall for a transition strip. Their interfacing between these subcontractors is essentially a series of screenshots of iMessage conversations they have with those subs. I made it clear to the drywall sub that I wanted quotes for the different parts of the job. He gives us one opaque quote with possibly an extra $100 (??). The transition strip sub, what we hear is that he'll come by by the end of next week. Saturday comes and he is no where to be found. JBC gave no updates along the way. I could also talk about their opaque billing practices, how they're charging for labor hours that don't seem to line up with what I can see on my front door camera. Or how they have 3 guys show up for the same amount of time and yet one of them is charging for an extra half hour? Honestly I could go on and on. We definitely regret going with JBC for our job. I should have heeded my gut feeling when Tom said what he did. You definitely should.

Our driveway and a 5-foot tall retaining wall between our driveway and front yard were severely…read moredamaged and on the verge of collapse. We hired A-1 Stone to remove the concrete driveway and retaining wall, and then to rebuild the driveway with pavers and the retaining wall with concrete blocks. Additionally, proper drainage was installed behind the retaining wall. The work was performed by the company's owner, Paul Singh, along with two of his employees. Remarkably, A-1 Stone completed all the work in just three days, and the results are excellent. Everything looks great, and Paul and his team were a pleasure to work with. I would definitely consider contracting them again. I do have two (minor) recommendations for A-1 Stone to improve: Website Improvement: The company's website is somewhat lacking. It's difficult to see examples of their work or to assess their experience with specific types of projects. A portfolio showcasing past work would be very beneficial. Product Variety: The selection of colors and products they offered was rather limited. Other companies provided brochures featuring a range of stone colors and types, while A-1 Stone only offered a single option for our retaining wall: grey concrete blocks. Overall, it was a relief to work with A-1 Stone. They completed the job efficiently with great results, and there were no hassles or problems. Furthermore, both Paul and his employees spoke English, which made communication much easier, especially since many contractors employ workers who only speak Spanish or Portuguese.

We had neighbors walk by and compliment on how great it looked while they were still completing it. I would absolutely recommend Paul and wouldn't hesitate to use him again for future projects.

Bought a recent online deal for a paver patio through Rockey's business. The area I needed done was…read morefairly large at ~40'X15' so the deal turned into a pretty good discount as opposed to full payment for the project. When we bought our home it had a cruddy concrete slab we wanted replaced and Rockey took care of the demo/removal too. Given seemingly high demand and his solid reputation Rockey's backlog was pretty full when I purchased the deal, so in lieu of the longer than desired timeframe he made it right for us. The project itself took a brisk two days and Rockey and his team did an excellent job. There was some remedial touch up that needed to be done and he scheduled and completed that additional work promptly, happily and free of charge. Definitely got the sense and saw the pudding proof that Rockey cares about customer satisfaction. Would definitely recommend him to others and would return for future projects.
