Getting to buy a whole flat's worth of new furniture is pretty heady stuff. All the things to…read morechoose from! After some not inconsiderable searching on the internets, I'd managed to narrow down the bed I wanted to 1 of 5 frames offered by a combination of Ikea, Bensons and John Lewis. I'm pretty lazy though, so wasn't sure I could be bothered dragging my butt out to see them all. Thankfully, enter the Bensons for Beds summer sale! One of the frames I liked was being offered for not much more than half price, so I decided to check it out first as if I liked it the process would be suddenly much easier..... There are quite a few Bensons locations around Glasgow of various shapes and sizes but I decided to head to the Hillington branch as it was one of the bigger branches and relatively convenient to get to from home. Sharing it's space with a Reid's furniture store, it gives plenty to look at for those furniture shopping. As I'd already picked the bed frame I wanted, as well as a divan and mattress combo for the spare room, the only decision to be made on the trip was a mattress to go with the bed frame. I was there with my Maw, so obviously we dove straight in to trying them out. Probably, shouldn't have started with the £2000 memory foam, top of the line option. Sadly out of my budget but immediately ruined me for all other mattresses. We picked ourselves up though and with the help of the sales person tried a whole bunch of mattresses until I found the right one for the right price. I was impressed with how committed he was to helping me find one I liked best, very patient! He was also super helpful when organising the purchase and delivery, the one downside being that their finance system was down, so I had to return another day to get that sorted. It was worth it though as they offer 0% interest with flexible terms, and it was relatively easy to get sorted. Overall a great buying experience with a good choice of options available. In the end, thanks to the sale, I saved about 30% in total, so definitely worth watching for one if you're looking to purchase a bed. Can't wait for them to be delivered now!

But there's no denying that the IKEA experience has transformed the way we equip our homes. Yet it is an experience shopping here, and you either love it or hate it. If you have no idea what you're getting into or what you're looking for, go upstairs to the showroom section and browse around until you have achieved the necessary zombie-like trance state to descend into the main store. Then wander mindlessly through the maze of stuff until you (hopefully) find what you were looking for. If it's larger items you want, you then have to locate them in the warehouse section, which resembles that scene at the end of 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' with its endless rows of high shelves. Then finally, the tills, after which you will be more inclined to enter the cafe area for some sustenance after your endurance trial. Savvy shoppers like myself pre-shop on the website, which handily will print out a list of your items and tell you where they are located, including the exact shelf number in the warehouse for the bulky items. Then, avoiding the upper floor, head straight for the small door behind the main staircase and go straight into the store. Pay careful attention to the layout of the 'short-cut' doors that connect the different areas; these will help you to avoid trolling round the whole maze.

I visited on Sunday and while it can be a nightmare on the weekend, thankfully this store is big enough that you might not notice. The line for food was ridiculous though, and it was at least a 10 minute wait. They've also changed the meatball portion sizing so it's small, medium large whereas I'm convinced you used to order by number of meatballs. You also can't have both chips AND mash, you need to get a separate portion of chips. No one stands between me and double carbs, ok?! Apart from these small grizzles, I generally really like going to Ikea and will always overspend and bring home things I don't need. This time it was a fish shaped ice cube tray. Do I need it? probably not. But it was only 90p! Hot tip: if you're holding a gallery exhibition, this is a great place to get the frames. The frames come in boxes of 10 and you can take the whole box for easy transportation.

No communication and no delivery on the Wednesday. I called again and they said they called and no answer, they had called the wrong number. Turns out my delivery still hadn't left the warehouse. Assured it would come Thursday. Thursday comes and no calls... I call them AGAIN. Turns out they were still calling the wrong number when I questioned why they hadn't emailed as a second port of call they said it's not as personal.... Lol more personal then nothing at all?!?!? I was assured it would come Friday. Friday comes and I get a call to say it will be delivered between 11-1 YAY! 1pm comes and no bed... so I call AGAIN. I'm told it's been delivered and signed for, it was at my billing address and nobody was home to sign so shouldn't be left! I call to rectify and get nothing. I then check in with the other address and only 2 boxes are there out of 3. So I call archers AGAIN and they say there's nothing they can do and they can try and get it to me on the Saturday..... so not only 2 days off work and 2 days having to work from home, but also sleeping on the floor for 4 days and 5 days late!!!!! I've browsed the store a number of times but at the weekend I made my first purchase, a new giant bed :) Customer service was pretty good, with helpful and friendly staff. We tried out a number of beds and mattresses and were happy with the advice and answers to the questions we had. We ended up going for a bespoke upholstered bed, which I was slightly disappointed to learn came with a 8-10 week wait versus the 6 weeks stated on the website. I appreciate that we requested some changes but it feels like a long time to wait for my new bed, hence the one star downgrade. Getting the bed delivered was a performance, and they charge a pretty penny for delivery and putting the bed together. I bought two beds and two mattresses - the cheaper of the two has caused no problems. The base for the master bedroom was the wrong size, and colour, and I had to pay for removal. But returning the mattress has been a nightmare! The salesgirl in the shop was very quick to recommend a very expensive mattress... but doesn't seem to have given any thought to my size or weight. The mattress is totally unsuitable for my size and weight.... and now they don't want to return it, despite the fact that this is causing me back pain. Their attitude seems to be, its not faulty, you just don't like it. Terrible misselling. The cheap and old IKEA mattress I had in my rental house before, caused me fewer problems. Avoid.

The store may not be as modern as some of the newer John Lewis stores, but it makes up for it by having a nice selection of items you'd expect to find in a John Lewis from clothing to fragrances and technology. There is also an Optician and a Cafe inside. The store was still tidy and presented well. The store stretches over five floors, including a basement. There are toilets on two floors which is handy and I often find these both quieter and cleaner than the ones actually inside the shopping centre. There weren't too many staff members around the floor, although due to the size, it would be difficult to have someone everywhere. The staff seemed friendly when I did find someone. I do think it's a waste for such a big department store in a big city to be closing at 6 pm, other than on Thursdays, when they close at 7 pm. It just seems way too early, although it is in line with some smaller stores nearby, there are shops open later so I can't see why John Lewis can't either. One of my favourite stores in the city, I do prefer this to other department stores nearby. I do prefer the John Lewis in Edinburgh though, which after John Lewis in Aberdeen closed is their only other branch in Scotland. 4*

I remember I used to work for a mystery shopper company and I once got asked to go here to do my nosey. When I first read the job description I thought that would be an awesome day out, lying on all the different beds to see what one was comfiest, then I read a bit further. My job was to go in, ask someone whether or not latex is a kind of memory foam. WHAT? Who asks that? I can just imagine some old married couple heading to Archers for a new bed... Bill: Oh that one looks nice, she's a beauty. Margaret: Oh, I'm not sure... Do you think latex is a kind of memory foam? I mean, for the love of all things bed related, why would that ever cross your mind? I did contemplate doing that job for the giggles, as the thought of marching purposefully up to some unsuspecting bed sales person to ask that still makes me chuckle but I ended up realising that for the £8 fee it was probably more hassle than it was worse and I wouldn't have been able to keep a straight face whilst asking that question, totally giving the game away. All in all, a huge shop, friendly staff and competitive prices.

In the split up politics I'd agreed to keep the hellish bed he'd MADE. Yes. And it gets worse. It was not a bed that sits on the ground. Oh no, this was a bed that was roughly seven feet high and sat a whole foot below the ceiling (I'm not going to answer your question). Kinda like a massive bunk bed but underneath it there was piles of his junk. Anyway, enough about the tree house. It's now gone. Thank God. But, in the break up proceeding, I'd agreed to keep the bed (well, there was no way for him to take it was there?) and he was taking the duvet, pillows etc. So off we endued a strained car journey to this place for the purchase of some pillows, duvet etc. It's a massive shop filled with a whole host of beds (as Eleanor has mentioned) and a good side selection of bed accessories including some sets of bed spreads and the like. The staff are pleasant, helpful and extremely easy to locate - something that is underrated. Meanwhile, the prices are reasonable and their products range from the cheap (and not so nice) to the luxurious. So there's something for everyone and every price range. Give it a go.

It's pretty big, and is quite sensibly arranged. In some stores I wasn't sure whether I'd seen everything by the time I'd left but Sofology is in no way confusing. It's just across one floor and, although the sofas are arranged in groups and in living room-style scenes, it's relatively open-plan. Wonderfully, every sofa collection is accompanied by an iPad which gives you all the details on the customisation available. So they might be displaying a two-seater in blue but you can use the iPad to see that three-seaters are available and to look at the range of fabric and hardware options. They also display all the sizing information and other helpful stuff. It took me a while to realise how helpful this was so we ended up doubling back a bit and looking at some options again. If you're shopping for a sofa then I recommend making use of the iPads right from the start. It's the most convenient way of displaying all the relevant information that I've seen. Of course, the do also have fabric books out - no tablet screen is going to be as good as a swatch. It wasn't long before we'd found something that fit all our requirements. At this point we quickly found a salesperson (apart from a "hello" at the door we'd been left to our own devices until now) who very efficiently told us everything we needed to know about the sofa. He processed our order in no time, making sure we were totally happy with everything we ere getting and now we can't wait for it to arrive. If we'd found this place first we probably wouldn't have needed to visit anywhere else.
