I'm not sure why it's taking me years to do this review however I've been going to seafood city…read moresupermarket since they opened this Chicago location years ago. When it first opened, it was great to see how bright and clean it was and to see all of the incredible stacked foods and items. However, over the years it's definitely been worn down a little bit and could use a new refresh. What has been good is that they really expanded some of the seating area as well as the seafood city Grill area and the food offerings. However even this is slightly inconsistent as far as what's available when it's open, etc. It's also great that this particular location also is able to build out some of the other additional vendors like the bakery by Valerio. Again, though, I wish there was a little bit more consistency and organization throughout. Parking lot is has been quite ample except during peak times. I really wish they would open one in the suburbs as well. The only major disappointing thing was I used to carry the best Chicharron by Saint Michaels and then they absolutely abused and price gouged the bags. And eventually they stopped carrying it. I however, have gone directly to the stores to purchase.

Coming from Boston, I had heard the news that Time Out Market is closing its doors (in both…read morelocations!) in the next week, and I was looking forward to seeing what the Chicago food hall looked like. I was surprised to see that the website does allow reservations for large groups, so we booked through Resy a few days before coming. When we arrived at Fulton Market, it took a few tries but we happily found street parking. It was a little bit overwhelming when we first walked in. It feels "bigger" than the original food hall in Lisboa or the one in Boston - not necessarily in square footage, but primarily in energy. It was very busy and especially loud, and there was a DJ booth in the corner that felt closer to a club than a restaurant. I'm guessing part of this might be because it was a Friday night, but curious if it's been busier than normal since the announcement of the market's impending closure. The "reservation" system felt nominal at best, as there weren't any tables set up when we got there - by the time I was able to flag down staff for the food hall, it would have taken quite a while for them to find seats and move them together. In the end we were able to find a corner that worked out pretty well. Similar to the Boston location, you can order online. It didn't feel prominently advertised, as the food stalls themselves all had long lines and were pretty understaffed. In addition, after ordering online, there was no notification that the order was ready for pick-up (for several of the stalls). And while TOM is in a pretty central part of Chicago, the food felt spectacularly expensive for what you were getting. Pretty much everything was over $20 (before tax + tip) for an okay amount of food. On top of that, in our large 15+ person group, the vast majority of us felt that the food was definitively below average quality. Mine in particular was Bill Kim Ramen Bowl's tofu rice bowl. It was a depressing mix of unseasoned tofu cubes, dry arugula, kimchi, plain white rice with no sauce, a handful of pickled veggies, and a half-avocado that wasn't even sliced. It tasted about how it looks. None of that surprises me, but it felt like a far cry from the Lisboa concept, where I was a repeat customer for the high-quality food by distinguished chefs at extremely affordable prices. I'm glad I went, but won't be especially sad to see it go.

I also really enjoyed picking up a variety of delicious breads from the bakery every single day as well. My favorite was the cream pan; it was super soft, and had a perfect amount of cream filling. There were also a lot of cute breads in the shape of different characters that were also as delicious as they were cute. There is a self check out line as well as plenty of cashiers so the wait to check out was minimal to none.

I was just in the neighborhood and I've been wanting to check Mitsuwa out forever so I figured I'd finally take a look around. So whats here? Plenty of food options! It smells great in here. Walking in and right away there's wagu bento for sale. Friendly workers offering samples of alcohol behind them. Cool food stalls doing classics like yakitori, grilled fish, karaage, katsu don and more! Crepe stand, you bet. Bread shop, absolutely. With the yakisoba bread I've never actually seen for sale! Honestly there's plenty more. There's a grocery store. I didn't spend long in this section but I saw some of my favorite snacks and some premier cuts of fish. A small gatcha section! I didn't see anything I loved but they had some Spy Family stuff. A One Piece Card Game shop. I don't know anything about this particular card game, outside of its obvious relationship to the Anime it's based on. That said, the shop was busy and seemed to have people hanging out and maybe playing the game as well. Not sure if this was a pop-up or not. A small Pop-up section. Currently dedicated to merchandise from Godzilla, Ultraman, and Kamen Rider. A bookshop. Which is under-selling it. It's got English AND Japanese versions of manga. A nice selection of classic stuff and modern hits. Its got plenty of random merchandise and figures too. This spot is a destination on its own for sure. I'll be back with a full paycheck to eat and shop.
