My walking tour around the city culminated with a tasting back at the lovely wine shop, and not only was Francisco extremely knowledgeable about the authentic and off the beaten path places to visit in Lisbon, but he was also an outstanding historical guide, spoke great English, and kept me laughing all day. I'd read so many positive reviews about his food and wine trail tours that I had high expectations, which he completely exceeded - it was an incredible value. Venha Vinho's tour availability can be limited due to their great reviews, so request space early and make sure to ask for Francisco!

I was told, my first restaurant meal ever was at Fisherman's Wharf Exposition #1 in San Francisco…read more I was seven years old and I had Lobster Thermador; it was the beginning of a life long love affair with food. I've had so many fantastic and memorable meals they are too numerous to list (even on a spreadsheet). But, I've never had a "WTF" meal ever, until tonight. Tonight's dinner at Canponesa in Lisbon, Portugal slammed me like Mac Truck. Camponesa is this amazing restaurant that does not take reservations, is cash only and a 90 minute wait is normal to secure a table. But what you get, if your patient and tenacious, is a 5 Star dinner that not only astound you, but will blow your mind, like it did mine. Their menu is on a portable blackboard your server brings to your table and explains each dish they offer. Everything, I repeat everything they offer sounds stupendous. We chose four: * A whole squid cooked in a way that the texture is indescribable. It's firm but not crunchy and it's in a onion warm sauce. I've never had squid done so unusually, and it was fantastic! * Whole Unshelled Prawns in a spicy sauce that was so good it made my liver quiver. Just amazing! * A raw beef dish that was ever so slightly seared with pickled onions, raw celery root with an olive oil base. It was so unique you won't find a match to this dish anywhere on this planet. * Like these three dishes weren't enough, our fourth and final dish was as mind blowing as any psychedelic drug known to man - a Charred Veal Rib that will certainly go down as "The Best Thing I Ever Ate In My Life"!!!!! It was so good, I cannot put into words how honestly exquisite and well prepared a "food" can be / get / happen / transpire or come about. Out of the thousands and thousands of things I've eaten (since that Lobster Thermador at 7 years old), this one, large veal rib was my pièce de résistance bite ever - and there is "No" second place - "Period"! The service was stellar, the ambiance is "old school" comfortable Cafe style and the wine list represents Portuguese wine at it's best. My experience here is as good as any meal can get! If I'm within 1,000 miles of Lisbon, Portugal, I will travel here just for one more world class dinner these nice people create.

You can't miss it if you're in the Cais do Sodré area - look for the gazebo where the pink street ends (yes, this actually makes sense once you're there). We were meeting some friends there and while we waited, we asked for the wine menu. Surprise, surprise, there isn't one! Our first waiter was very apologetic and tried to explain to us what they did have - even though he was portuguese he told us he was used to explaining the menu options in english. In fairness the waiters were very friendly, but the place seems to be geared up for tourists. The lack of interesting wines - they offered 4 different wines, a frisante, a rose, a white and a red, along with 3 or 4 other bottles - was enough to tell us they weren't trying to cater for wine lovers. We ordered a medium carafe of their red and also a slice of sardine tart and a cod fish cake. Neither of them particularly appealing, not too bad but also nothing to be reminded. We did like the goat's cheese we tasted after that, but we were disappointed we had to order bread on the side AND there were more slices of cheese than slices of bread - I know, I know, how did we ever overcome this terrible obstacle... I did like some of the details, such as the plastic beach buckets fitted into the tables serving as wine coolers, but that isn't enough to make me want to go back. The bathroom is appallingly shabby but they let you use the bathroom of the restaurant next door, where you feel like you're inside an artistic installation. Simply not good. Two stars for the effort, but it didn't convince me.

Interesting Cram Course In Lisbon's Jewish History…read more... With 3 full days to explore Lisbon, we started with a 3 1/2 hour tour on the first afternoon focusing on the Jewish history of the city. Here are the pros and cons: Pros: - We met our guide, Daniel, in the Principe Real section of Lisbon and walked a couple miles toward the Baixa and Chiado neighborhoods. He was more knowledgeable than an encyclopedia...as personable as an entertainer and tied lots of historical loose ends together. - Daniel included many of his own personal views which, depending on your outlook, could add or subtract from the experience. For us, it cut both ways. - All in all, a comprehensive and, at times, intense yet enjoyable 3 1/2 hour walking tour with insight into the Jewish past of Lisbon and Europe at large. - Price seemed reasonable.....100 Euros per person. Cons: - As noted above, Daniel included many of his own personal views which, depending on your outlook, could add or subtract from the experience. For us, it cut both ways. - There was quite a bit of walking up and down hills on cobblestone streets, but it's Lisbon, of course...so that's something to keep in mind. We'd recommend this tour, but first see if the primary guide, Paulo, is available.

After spending the better part of the day with him, we had a dramatically better understanding of the Jewish people's contributions to Portuguese (and Spanish) society over the past 700 years, as well as what life has been like for Jews living on the Iberian Peninsula from the 15th Century through the present. Paolo went above and beyond what we expected, and was also delightful to spend time with. We ended our time with him feeling as though we had spent the day with a great teacher and a friend.
