First time customer but one of the best automotive mechanic shop experiences I've had in 20 years. My wife found DP on a list of trusted area mechanics on our neighborhood list serve - what stood out to me were comments that DP was "honest" and gave "straight answers" -- I found that to be 100% accurate. I called DP for an estimate on repairs after our car was at a dealership for factory recall work and they wanted an astounding amount to fix a check engine light issue that the car was also having -- and as a non-mechanic (though self-proclaimed car nut) it didn't sound "right." When I initially called the reaction was a deadpan straight-shooter "oh that actually could be a fairly serious problem, and if that's what it is another dealership's service department might be better for the repair." But after taking time to ask me about the the issue, the symptoms I was seeing, and what the dealer was planning on doing, "oh that's all they were going to do? Yeah that's not hard and shouldn't be as much as they were saying. Bring it by tomorrow and i'll take a look." In the end DP saved me a lot over what the dealer asked for all the same repair work (dealer wanted almost 4 times as much), and fixed it in a single day - and within a day of my initial call. True to their reputation they were honest about the issue, attentive in their customer service, and diligent in their work, and at a fair and reasonable price. Really top notch. You want to be able to trust any mechanic to be ethical and exacting in your vehicle maintenance, and I quickly gained that trust from David and his staff at DP. When I asked about procuring the parts on my own they were forthcoming about how much money I could save. A lot of shops I have been to in past won't even allow you to supply new parts and pay for install only. Only drawback is they don't have much space so get crowded easily. I visited DP Auto Service this morning as a first time car owner was very impressed with the service that I received. After making no appointment, I drove on in on a Saturday morning and asked about an oil change. The attendant said it would only be about a half hour. Fast forward 30 minutes and I returned to my vehicle sitting out front ready to go. The mechanic asked if I had had a tune up recently (which I had.) This got me nervous as to the fact that I thought the dishonest mechanic was going to come out and inform me that unnecessary work was done. Fortunately he simply let me know that he was very happy with how well maintained the vehicle was and the only work to be done was the oil change. All in all I will be returning to DP Auto Service for my regular maintenance . The team is friendly, trustworthy, and charge very reasonable rates. read more

These guys are absolutely great. I was having a bit of trouble with my brakes, in my old Takoma, that I was pretty sure needed to be replaced. Stopped by to check to make sure that was the problem, and to schedule an appointment. David, the owner, literally stopped what he was doing to walk with me to my truck and take a quick look to confirm the issue and give me a quote (which of course, I don't expect him to drop everything, but showed he really cared and was accommodating, and I'm sure he could tell I was a bit anxious about the issue). Scheduled appointment for that weekend. Fast forward a couple of days, and my brakes seem to have gotten worse as I head home from work. Pulled over and called him, asking if there was any way to get an earlier appointment. He told me to come in the next morning, and I explained that I would have to call into work and checked whether there was any way to get it done by 12pm to avoid needing to reschedule too many client appointments. No problem! Again, not anything I expect or feel an auto shop owes me, but amazing that he was so willing to help me out on such short notice. The work was done on time, and no problems after that. Update: I later gave them a call, due to being in the process of selling my truck and getting something newer, and asked who they would recommend in VA to inspect the vehicle before purchase (since they're the only mechanic I've found around the area that I trust). They were again, super accommodating. These guys are just the best. I'll definitely return, even though they're a drive from my new place. read more

People can say they are honest and trustworthy, but what matters is when they show it, and David really does. I took my 16-year old car to him and he basically had to talk me out of giving him money to fix it because he said it wasn't worth it. I was scared to face a new car buying process but David's assessment and honesty- literally telling me I shouldn't have DP do work because it's not the best use of my money- is what led me to figure out my next steps and to move on from my old car. David & team keep my 2007 Toyota RAV 4 in tip-top shape; thanks to them, no car payments, and I can take this 12 year old car anywhere with confidence. I thought this was a five star business, until they forgot to put all the screws back into my car. I had a panel flying off my car on the highway. Thats fine mistakes happen right? The follow up on their end was some of the worst customer service I have ever had though. Instead of owning up to their mistake and making it right, they were very very rude over text message (all caps etc). Its just immature, unnecessary, and surprising especially considering all the good reviews. I am lucky their mistake did not cause more damage, because clearly they could care less. Originally, I took my car for oil change and tire pressure since I kept getting noticed from the sensor that tires needed air for a couple of weeks... Found out there was a nail in the back tire. Then I was afraid that my front brakes had issues, found out instead it was the serpentine belt (never heard of that car piece) so David explained to me how it functions and when it cracks, the car makes that squeaky noise when driving. I am glad my Nissan was checked by this beautiful crew of mechanics. They are all so courteous and professional. Thank you for the amazing job! read more

This little garage is excellent, they always have a line of cars, but get through all of them efficiently. I've been a couple times for regular checkups like oil change, tire rotation, general maintenance, and just recently went back because my window wiper fluid wouldn't shoot out. The guy found the tubing had been chewed through by rats, but instead of replacing the whole thing he cut off the ruined part adjusted the tubing, and reattached. It now works great and it took him all of 5 minutes, didn't even ask for compensation, he figured it out and fixed it so fast. First time I've ever tipped at an auto shop, these guys are great! read more

I drove up to this place because I had a slow air tire leak that had been bugging me for a few weeks and decided to get it checked out. I am 8 months pregnant and when I first pulled up I was a little afraid to approach. The place is attached to a gas station and everyone was getting gas and they had a ton of cars, so it was a bit cramped to say the least. When I got out, I approached and there were two guys working. One kind of ignored me but the other came right up and asked how he could help. I told him my situation and he told me to pull right up. Even though he was working on someone else's car when I drove up, he stopped what he was doing to help me immediately. He began checking my tires and struck up a conversation about life, kids, and pregnancy. He asked me if I was biracial (I am) and said so were his kids. He made me incredibly comfortable and I stood there and talked to him the whole time he worked. At the end of the day they only charged me a little over $20 to have my car tire fixed and I was riding out of there in a little over 30 minutes. It was such a pleasant experience and I will happily go back in the future! read more

I had called ahead of time to drop off the car and was advised 2pm, but when I arrived the lot was full and they weren't able to attend to my car until 3. For some reason I've never been comfortable with the idea of going to a mechanic attached to a gas station. They just always looked shady to me. But this place got so many positive reviews on Yelp (and it's close to my house) so I decided to give them a try. I still didn't trust them to install my new flux capacitor solely off of Yelp reviews, so I waited for something smaller to go wrong. Then this week a screw decided to lay down its life in the middle of the street as my tire was approaching and voila! I had a reason to go. They looked packed when I got there. All of the bays were full and there appeared to be cars parked waiting for service. Still, I told the guy I needed my tire fixed and rather than telling me how long it would be, he just asked, "Which one? Back left? Okay, one minute." I got in my car to get some stuff out expecting it to be a long wait and as soon as I looked up, another guy had already placed the jack under the car and was lifting it up...with me and my daughter still inside. Three minutes later, he'd taken the wheel off, removed the screw, plugged the tire and had it back on the car. He told me it was $20. I paid him and drove off. That's the fastest service I've ever had. The only reason they get four stars instead of five is because I didn't have anything major done. read more

STAY AWAY. They get one star for diagnosing a problem that others overlooked, but ZERO on customer service and common sense! They replaced a part for me without first asking me for permission and then charged me after the fact. The following week, my car died as I was driving it. I took it back and they replaced another part, pleading innocence in the whole matter. I paid for the part. But that's not the half of it. When I went to pick up my car, THEY HAD LOST MY KEYS. This has to be car maintenance 101. Not only did they lose them, but every employee proceeded to deny any responsibility for them or the car. They then proceeded to break in to my car to search inside for it. After an hour of standing in the rain, the key was nowhere to be found. I had to leave, by bus, and return a week later. They had to order a new key and have it programmed at a dealership. When I returned for my car, IT WAS OUT OF GAS. And through this whole thing, they made no offer of a refund or credit other than paying for the replacement keys, which should have gone without saying. In conclusion, WORST CAR REPAIR EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE. There are many better mechanics out there, just ask around. DO NOT GO TO DP AUTO. read more

I have been using this repair shop for over a decade, after being consistently overcharged and underwhelmed by the service at 'fancier' auto service centers. I have two older model cars, a Saab and a BMW. Dave will take the time to look at something and give you the straight answer. He has in the past referred me out if he felt they could not do the service. He recently fixed a broken front light on the Saab for about $300 less than my daughter had been quoted up in Princeton. My longtime repair shop, BCC Automotive, was gentrified out of Bethesda to the sticks, and my wife got an insane quote from the dealer to repair the brakes on our Honda. I looked at the positive reviews about DP, which is close to where we live and gave them a shot. First of all, they're fair regarding price, efficient, honest, and at the end I mentioned the Yelp reviews and they reminded me about the 10% discount for mentioning Yelp (I had forgotten) and took 10% off the total. For what it's worth, they have a sense of humor and they're interesting on a personal level. I'm thrilled to find a nearby replacement for my other mechanic and very pleased. read more

Came in for a problem a Honda dealer couldn't figure out (noise from bent metal dust shield on wheel), David identified it and fixed it instantly. Additionally the AC compressor needed to be replaced as well. David quoted a price below the dealer and was very honest and straightforward about the work that needed to be done. After being a big fan of this place, I can no longer recommend it. STRIKE 1 I dropped off my wife's car for an oil change a couple of weeks ago and 2 days after picking it up heavy smoke was pouring out of the engine when she was parking on the street near our home. A good samaritan came by to help her and found that the oil cap had been left loose and had blown off leaking oil all over the engine...he told her that the probability of an engine fire was high. (another reviewer here had the same problem) STRIKE 2 Called DP and let them know that this was the case - I was asked to bring it in - which I did. He called me back to say the car was ready for pickup. Not once did he apologize for THEIR MISTAKE. I let him know that he should leave the keys at the gas station store counter...came up at 7pm and no keys. I was furious, left him a Voicemail and received a call back early next morning apologizing...went to pick up the car again and was directed to the car a couple of streets away...are you &ITTING ME? You screwed up - you should be friggin delivering the car home not making me come back a 2nd time AND walk a couple of blocks away! STRIKE 3 Next day the wife tells me the car is still smoking...I check the hood and sure enough, it's cleaner but still dirty! After screwing up twice how about getting this simple job right?! STRIKE 4 - YOU'RE DONE It's been 24hrs since my last call to him (I will not take my car back here but wanted to let him know that the problem is unresolved)..no call back. I suspect that some of the guys that work for him are rookies and he now has more business than he can handle. I for one will be making his life easier...bye bye. Will try the BP across the street - they changed my blown parking light for $7 in a pinch last year which was incredible. read more

I guess the difference is between working with David and working with someone else. Last week my car died on my way to work in the morning. I called David and he sent someone (not affiliated with the garage) to jump my car. I had bought a new battery a few weeks earlier, so it was clearly the alternator. I'd also noticed a rattling noise earlier in the week. The alternator was fixed within a day and David told me I needed new struts. I'm a grad student and not really down to drop another $1,000 on that. David was awesome - emailed me links to the parts on Amazon to purchase myself to save me a few hundred bucks. They arrived earlier this week, and the car was fixed within a day yet again. Awesome experience this time!!!! read more

I go to David at DP Auto for maintenance work on my two cars. His shop is attached to a Shell gas station on Connecticut. Unfortunately his shop is not affiliated with the gas station so he can't give me gas discounts! (I tried :p) He's done work for me such as: Oil, transmission, brake fluid changes Tire rotation, balancing, alignment Changed rotors and brake pads Changed air filters Fixed burnt out headlights and turn signals Installed new tires He hasn't pressured me into buying anything that I didn't need, which is nice. Prices are always fair. The garage is also open so you could watch them work on your car if you wanted to. David will be the guy whose arm is engulfed in tattoos. (Don't worry, he's quite the friendly chap!) Go seek him out if you want your car to run smoothly without being shanked by outrageous prices. read more

I'll admit it. I was spoiled. I used to get my oil changed at a dreamland of a Jiffy Lube in the Chicago suburbs complete with $5 off coupons, complimentary interior vacuuming, Keurig coffee, and People magazines in the waiting room. DP Auto Service is no such place. It is an auto service shop attached to the Shell station - no more, no less. Staff was friendly, fair price - $35, and it took about 30 mins. There is nowhere to wait, but luckily it is across the street from Politics and Prose, so you can wander around the bookstore while your car is being serviced. Don't get me wrong, I will probably go back, especially if something major happens to my car, since I live nearby and others have such good experiences. Until then, I'll try to get over the warm fuzzies that I'm accustomed to with my oil change. read more

Got a call from the dealership during a routine service the brakes on my Odyssey were IN THE RED!! (Dealership's emphasis). They estimated $800-$900 to fit four new brake pads. I thought, "you must be kidding with that estimate" and looked on Yelp. Called DP at 8AM, dropped the car at 10:30 and two hours later I drove away with new brake pads for $198. That's right. They checked all four pads and brake systems. Turns out I only needed new pads for the two front tires. The rear ones were still 4mm, which is safe and acceptable. DP also called me to explain the situation before replacing the pads (something I had asked him to do), and patiently answered my questions to assuage my auto naivete. Service is fast, efficient, priced WAY WAY below the dealership and no pressure. In my initial call, he told me that he could easily return the parts if I didn't need all four replaced but that he wouldn't know until he saw the car. WHAT?! He was willing to return the part rather than tell me and my three kids that I absolutely had to replace the brakes?! Nope. He gave me an honest answer with explanation. I will definitely be bringing my car here for repairs as needed. I will definitely be bringing my car here for future repairs as needed. read more
