picking some apples in the summer-fall
    Allison R.

i grew up a honey pot orchards girl myself, but sherborn is a whole lot closer to the city than stowe, and last saturday was first-foray-into-fall apple pickin' time. there is a 4-5 acre orchard off of rt 27. we paid $19 to pick a bushel of macintosh apples. they have a credit card swiper thing onsite, which comes in handy for those of us who trust in plastic. they also allow pets on leash- wish i had known that before coming out! post apple picking, hit up the farm stand store, 1/4 miles up the road. they sell veggies, chicken and turkey pot pies, super huge pumpkins, and other fall treats. yum!

Watch out! Poison covers trunk and ground around apple tree!
    Larry L.

Yes, I have to agree with Rebecca W that Dowse is covered in poison ivy. I overheard someone say when I was there that there was a sign somewhere but I didn't see it nor did anyone else whom I spoke to who was apple picking. The ground as well as the trees are covered. I feel sorry for the unsuspecting apple pickers with their children who can't recognize it and certainly don't expect it. It's unconscionable that Dowse doesn't get rid of it or, at least, warn people BEFORE they purchase their bags of the danger that awaits!

This review is for APPLE PICKING. Dowse orchard is a nice farm stand, but the apple picking is overpriced and underwhelming. First, the farm stand is not in walking distance of the picking so there no cider doughnut or snacking opportunities. The bags for you pick are also very overpriced. The smallest bag is $16 and it was $36 for the same size bag you can get for $20 at other locations. They do have some nice older trees, but there is a reason some of the older varieties they still carry have been replaced. We tried their Porter apples, which are mostly a mushy version of a golden delicious. The views are beautiful - but there's not a spot to sit and enjoy them.

y! If you are an apple sauce and/or apple butter maker, their bulk bags are ideal (sold at the farm stand just a bit down the road)

At the farm store, we told the employee that we wanted to pick 4 quarts of strawberries for $40. On the board, it said 2 quarts $25, 4 quarts $40. But I asked for 2 boxes. The Woman told me that I have to buy only 1 box, can not be split. I paid $40 and walked to the field, about 15 minutes. When we got to the field, the employee informed me that 2 people can not pick strawberries to 1 box that we need to buy additional box to enter the field. They did not have any boxes to purchase there. I had to walk back to the front store, buy another box and walk back to the field. I am sorry, but that almost an hour of my time wasted. Plus aggravation of poor customer service. When I got to the store and asked for a refund, because I did not pick any strawberries, i was pointed to the board, where is said no refund. I was handled in the most rude way, wasting $40 of my hard earned money. Sunshine farm provides very poor customer service and lacking human factor. I will never go there again. I will be driving extra 30 minutes to Tougas farm, where employees are always happy to see you, care about customers and their business. It offers so much more!

You can order a deli sandwich to your liking and you can build your own salad at their bountiful salad bar. The salad bar is really nice and is more often than not my main reason for visiting the store. Here you can create your own unique salad with a good variety of salad makings including your basic lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers plus potato salads, fruits and a great variety of other salad toppings, vegetables and dressings. They have a good hot food bar too with various meat dishes, chicken and so forth plus pasta dishes, potatoes, vegetables and more. You'll also find some nice treats in their bakery area such as muffins and cookies. Their deli carries Boar's Head deli meats which is a very good meat company and their cheeses are excellent as well. If you're looking to buy groceries here they do carry quite a few of the essentials. They have a good sized produce area here as well for your fruits and veggies. It is a busy store but the cashiers keep the lines going at a pretty good clip. The atmosphere is nice and it's always a clean store which makes for a pleasant shopping experience. When I am passing through the area I always make it a point to stop by and see what they have to offer.

We got it a few days early and put it in the freezer to keep...Took it out two days before eating time and let it defrost in the fridge. Transferred everything but the turkey to pots/pans on the stove for heating instead of the microwave and put the turkey in the oven day of. It was super easy to reheat everything and get it to temp. I had concerns about the mashed potatoes as those can be weird sometimes but they reheated perfectly. Everything tasted SO good, full of flavor, and very delish! The turkey was very moist and tender - like fall apart and the flavor of the gravy, and sides were all excellent. I think this was probably one of the best turkeys I have had. Definitely want to try the outpost farm again as I am sure everything they have is great. I was very happy with the choice and outcome and it made our Thanksgiving meal like a home cooked meal minus the mess and all the cooking lol.

Here's a breakdown: What worked well / strengths The staff were extremely kind and helpful. The grounds and orchards were well maintained and offered enjoyable scenery and walking paths. The cider donuts are outstanding. There are plenty of activities in the orchards, which my students enjoyed. What could improve... The food offerings were not ideal. The quality felt closer to a school lunch standard, but with a price tag higher than expected. As for the cider itself, I'm not a huge fan of it generally, so I can't strongly endorse that part of the menu. Prices for picking or admission can feel steep even for a group rate. Belkin / Lookout Farm is a lovely destination with lots of charm, especially for seasonal visits and orchard-based activities. If you're going primarily for the cider or food, temper expectations. But if your goal is to have students enjoy the orchard, fall vibes, fresh donuts, and outdoor experience, it delivers well.

If you want to purchase another bag it is $15! Parking is complimentary and there is no train, we had to walk! Not sure if that is just because it is a weekday and not a weekend. We did get some Asian pears, peaches, nectarines and apples. At the end we bought Apple cider and donuts at the market.
