Jeremy claims there was additional things they found wrong and that he notified us. (he didn't and these new charges were a surprise) As we start going through the bill, we notice we're being charged for labor and parts that should have been included in the original price for the head gasket. Then, the additional parts are priced at 2-3x what they should be with outrageous labor charges. ($200 in labor to replace a thermostat which takes 10 minutes to remove 2 bolts.) Owner refuses to release the vehicle unless we pay and we have a bunch of back and forth where he starts dropping the price but still wants to charge stupid labor charges and more. Then he pulls up high prices on the computer to justify his high costs. Same parts I found for 1/2 to 1/3 the price. Now we also discover they didn't put certain parts back on the vehicle when they finished and there is a missing exhaust cover. So not only do they overcharge the work is sloppy. I cannot recommend this shop at all. They don't honor their quotes, jack up the price of parts then refuse to release your vehicle until you pay. 0 stars if I could.

If your employees are too busy to do the work you might need more employees, or better ones that are capable of handling a working out the logistics of taking a phone call to a warranty company. They performed this service free of charge and spent quite a bit of time doing so. The Hawai'i District Team Leader, Clayton, even took it upon himself to come with me for a test drive to check out the problem. He then personally wrote up a detailed report for me to take back to the other shop to verify my concerns and the possible causes. I couldn't ask for better service than that! TL;DR: I paid over $1,000 at Midas for spark plug replacement and one ignition coil. The same work…read morewould've cost ~$500-800 elsewhere. Get a second opinion if you can. I'm sad and regretful about my most recent experience at this Midas location. I brought my car in on short notice because the check engine and "trac off" lights came on, and the car was jerking while accelerating. I was charged $219 for a diagnostic, and the issue was found to be a rusty ignition coil (#4). The "minimum" recommended repair was to replace all 4 spark plugs and ignition coil #4, which I agreed to because I couldn't safely drive the car elsewhere. Here's where things went downhill: They quoted me $1,550.65 to replace all 4 ignition coils including all other fees and replacing 4 spark plugs. I didn't authorize that - only the single rusty one - so the total bill came out to $1,049.48 for just 4 spark plugs and 1 ignition coil. That seemed really high for a 4-cylinder vehicle. To double-check, I called two other shops in Hilo (Goodyear and Lex Brodies) and asked for estimates on the same work including diagnostic, parts, and labor. Goodyear: ~$585 Lex Brodies: ~$809 I ended up going through with the Midas repair because I needed the car fixed immediately and couldn't drive it around to shop for prices. While I'm grateful the car is running again, I do feel ripped off after comparing prices. I also learned that Midas has very high labor fees compared to others. To be fair, I've had good experiences here in the past with oil changes and tire issues. But after this experience, I'll definitely be getting second opinions for anything major.
