I went to them my first time last week and was helped by Nathan. I normally go to lex brodies but I'm always annoying at how Lex Brodies overcharges and refuses to use customer supplied parts (they always force you to use the lowest quality part they source and upcharge you for). Speed-O used the part I supplied and only charged me for work. They did it quickly and were always friendly, respectful, and approachable! I liked how I could talk to Nathan and the others like people. The price was very reasonable and what I'd expect for the work I got done. Had a lot of work done here. Normally a DIY on my own vehicle, have an older truck, but have no garage or carport at the moment. Nate did some work for my sister before. I was happy she went somewhere and got honest straight talk about her cars issues. My car's alarm was going off at odd and random times and I was annoying the neighbors in my apartment complex. Not cool. My landlord recommended Speed-O and takes his own cars there. I gave them a call and talked to the owner, who also is an ASE mechanic. They were busy when I called, so I was able to schedule the following week. They took a look at the car and asked me to bring it back the following week, since electrical fixes are often hard to figure out since there are so many things that factor in. I brought it back and they were able to find a faulty sensor/switch and fix it that same day. They are reasonably priced and I'm happy that I didn't take my car to the dealership, which would inevitably be much, much more expensive and the techs there probably would not look that carefully. So far, the car is not giving me any problems at all. I'm thinking of going back when my safety check expires in February. Hopefully, they will not be that busy, but a busy place means that they are getting business and must be good then. Thanks to Nathan and his crew! read more

I cannot say enough great things about Speed-O and Nathan. Our daughter is going to school in Hilo and very far from home in Colorado. We found Nathan at the end of the school year last year. He took great care of my daughters very old car, for a very affordable price. He went above and beyond and ensured the care would start and had an oil change before she came back to school, after the car sat for several months over the summer. Prior to getting my car repaired by Speed-O someone at another repair shop gave me a quote of over $3,000 and so I was going to sell my car instead of fixing it. This was sad for me since my car has sentimental value. So, I took it to Nathan at Speed-O for a second opinion. He fixed it for about 15% of the original quote! With this lower cost to repair, it now makes sense that I keep my car and this makes me very happy. I later heard that a potential customer went by Speed-o asking for a quote and that this person tried to negotiate the price and kept questioning the necessity of the fix. I feel for this person. I understand very well that - as a person who does not repair cars - it is hard to trust repair shops - especially when you have garages - like the first one I went to that quoted me $3,000 - about $2,500 more than Speed-O's final amount. This story prompted me to write this review. Nathan has now done 3 repairs on one of my vehicles plus oil changes on both of my vehicles. I have found that he is fairly priced and highly competent. I hope that by sharing this it will help people new to the area who may not be aware of the reputation he has rightfully earned in Hilo. I took in my 20 year old Subaru because at highway speeds the front end would jump and rattle. Also the brakes were squeaking since the pads were changed at one of the franchise chain shops about a year ago. The chain shop couldn't figure out what was wrong even though I took it back twice. Nathan and crew diagnosed both problems accurately and had it fixed the same day. They even did an oil change and lube job before giving the car back to me. All this at a reasonable price. Now the car runs as good as new. My 20 year old car is going to last several more years. I highly recommend this shop! read more

I'd love to leave 0 stars but Yelp won't let me. I was trying to get my car's safety check taken care of and was recommended to go to Speed-O's auto service. I had the displeasure of speaking to one of the rudest and least personable people I've ever had to deal with. I called ahead as instructed, and simply said that I wanted to get my safety check done on my car, He had a very rude and arrogant tone when he said to: "Get out of your car and talk to the guy who does the safety check". As a first-time-customer, I do not know who I am supposed to talk to about getting it taken care of, so I was hoping that the person answering the phone would at least tell me who I need to talk to. He then comes out of the office and just stands there, still having an arrogant attitude and just looks at me like I'm the stupid one and points to another guy who's working on a car and says: "He's almost done, about another 15mins and he'll help you out." and just goes right back to the office. No customer service, lots of arrogance and a disrespectful attitude towards me. read more

Nothing personal with the owner Nate. He is actually good. But I feel that I started getting sub-standard customer service from his employee as time went along with each return. It all started when I went in for an oil change. I picked up my car and got a call that they forgot to put my car registration back in after getting some info (why? don't know and it happened another time too). So I had to return to pick it up. Hey...a mistake is a mistake, right? I can live with that. Another time it was my safety inspection. I went to get a safety inspection at my usual inspection place, and the current inspection couldn't be found. Then I remembered that Nate reminded me that my safety inspection was almost due and wondered why they would take the safety inspection out. So, still being loyal to Speed-O, I returned another time for service. After a few days after the service, my "service engine" light came on. I called the shop and brought it back in for a diagnostic check. It was fine, and they said they wasn't going to charge me, but paid the diagnostic charge anyway. Today was the "point of not return". I needed to schedule service again, and I called numerous times on July 18 and even left a message. When I got no reply, I called again about 4 pm and finally got someone on the phone and asked to get an appointment, and got one scheduled for July 26 at 10AM. Now, Normally Nate would check the schedule and let me know if he's booked, but this person said that they were clear. On the day of, I brought my car in, they seemed unaware that I had an appointment, but said they could do it. Went my merry way and returned about an hour later to find the car wasn't even touched. Nate was apologetic and said there was a priority job that needed to be done. So I got my keys and left. I know that employers should help and stand with their employees, but never lie to a customer. You never even asked or offered to reschedule an appointment. That told me that your employee didn't put my appointment in the book. read more
