What they say/write on the work invoice/do are not in alignment. The work done was not fully correct and caused damage. When informed of this, they only made things partially Pono. Too bad because they are likable conversationalists, good prices and I wanted to support family owned local business. I would not recommend Clints if only based on customer service. Repair work was well done and efficient though. The good: The work was done correct, and earlier than expected! It would be a 5 star review for the work done, great job. Vehicle has been working great since. The bad: Stephanie did not give correct estimates, even after confirming what type of vehicle and engine. It was $100s of dollars more than she said, and she thought it was a totally different model. No written estimates, she gives you an estimate price, then when confronted of the difference later, claims to not have given the original estimate. Owning up to a mistake goes a lot further than shifting the blame. Forgetting to schedule the following appointment also shows the lack of experience here too. Kinda feels like the stereotypical government job, like the DMV with the customer service. Stephanie, I would suggest giving written estimates so there's no confusion. Also, if you make a mistake, own it, it can defuse a situation quickly. Returning for future work? Maybe for the small easy stuff, like oil changes and safety inspections. Seems like other 5 star reviews did those. When it comes to bigger jobs, get that original estimate on paper, or prepare for a higher price. read more

Called to ask how much to change a timing belt for a Honda and they refused tell me over the phone. they said I have to bring it in for a diagnosis and pay a fee BEFORE tell me how much. LMAO. Why do I need to pay for a diagnosis when there is no problem? I just need to do maintenance. What kind of a joke of a shop is this??? I just want my timing belt changed. We've taken our 2012 Honda crv to Clint's twice now, and won't be taking her anywhere else. Friendly people, exceptional customer service, and fair prices. And they do -not- try to upsell you on stuff you really don't need the way others will. As far as pricing, I had a friend on the mainland have the exact same problem I was having with her car (same make and model, just a couple of years older) and the price I paid was almost the same as what she paid. Thursday, after work my car unexpectedly didn't start. A coworker tried to jump it, no-budge, no click - so suspected it was the starter! Had it towed to my house. Rented a car for the entire week, thinking there's no way my car will get fixed until later in the week. The next morning at 0800, I called Clint's and spoke with Sheldon(sp?) who works there and told him exactly what happened. He was extremely professional on the phone and advised I use Kens Towing to get my car there that day. He also let me know that they would do their best to get it fixed - if not that day then Monday for sure. Now, because it was an emergency (the only vehicle I own), I was super grateful to hear that. All I had to do was sign a waiver to keep the car there overnight or for it to stay through the weekend. To my surprise, Sheldon was able to get everything fixed that day - it was more than just the starter that was the issue! They are closed on the weekend, but I had been at my other house outside of town and too tired to drive back to get the car. When I spoke to Auntie on the phone, she told me that she would be in the next day to do some work and that I could just pick it up then if I would like. Everyone there is extremely humble, very knowledgeable, and quick to satisfy their customers. I highly recommend this place! If I could give them 10 stars, I would! read more

If your like me and you want your vehicle repaired by an honest auto shop, then Clint's Auto Repair is the place for you. They are a family owned and operated business, located at the corner of Kilauea Ave and Kahaopea St in Hilo. I have taken my vehicles there for everything from an oil change to major engine repairs. They will let you know the different options that there are for fixing your vehicle, and find you the best prices on the parts to do the job. They don't have any "hidden" prices or recommended unnecessary repairs for your car. Clint or Sheldon will show you exactly what is wrong with your vehicle and let you know how much it will be to do the job, and how long it will take to complete. I took my F150 truck in for a tune up because it was running rough and the engine service light was on. I told the owner I had done a complete tune up about a year and a half ago so he said he would check it out. Long story short the problem was corrected by replacing an air mixture switch and he said a tune up was not necessary. I took my car in at 8am and it was fixed by noon at a reasonable price. Attention Hilo! Do not take your auto to this 3rd rate rip off joint.Took my van there for a routine oil change and had no oil leak. After they supposedly did the job, the invoice said that I had an oil leak and needed to replace the valve cover gasket. After noticing an oil leak in my carport, I took my Honda van back in good faith for Clint to resolve my problem. They overcharged me 442.35 and when I got home the oil leak was worse than it was. Mind you, I had NO OIL LEAK b4 when I went there for a simple oil change. I sent Clint a letter and told them what was going on and suspected that they had tampered with my vehicle to cause the problem. Further, I in formed him and his wife, that I am a senior citizen, recovering from cancer surgery and threatened to take him to small claims court, file a complaint with the BBB, call the local newspaper and go on social media. Not one but two very poor experiences dealing with this shop. First they once charged $700 to "clean da engine" before telling us it was the transmission and that they couldn't fix it. The second time they told us to order a part for a truck and gave us the part info. When we returned with the part they took off the old one and then realized it was the wrong part. They still charged $250 for the 'labor' of taking off a part they told us to buy and then putting the original part back on. Left us on the hook for the opened new part as well and wouldn't even give us a discount on the labor for the price of the part saying we ordered it and it wasn't their fault. If your someone who goes to a mechanic and expects them to be knowledgeable about their job don't go to this shop. At first they appeared to be a good shop but they are limited in their abilities and not afraid to charge you a lot of money even if its their mess up. Bottom line stay away from this shop. read more
