Yikes. I paid $25 for a haircut. At that price point i expected the barber to take her time. Instead, she literally cut like it was a super cuts. No care or time was spent on my hair. I asked for a simple high fade, so it was not complicated, but she literally blew through it. Also, I came here because i saw they serve beer, which seemed like a fun time. Alas, I wasn't offered a brew! To end it all, I asked for some product in my hair and she threw in some very light paste and didn't even style it. Very disappointed. read more

I swing in every few weeks to get my beard shaped, and every other time get my hair trimmed, lines redone, etc. Julian is _the man_ and has me looking fresh every time. They accept reservations, which I'd recommend, especially when students are in town. Even *more* especially on the weekends, when everyone wants to look their best, but also because I hear tell they're about to start giving clients a free beer after 4pm Thursday - Sat. If you do walk in and have to wait, there's free popcorn and a swanky little movie theatre in the back. But honestly, you probably want to hang out on the floor to listen to the staff banter. They're hilarious, especially if you speak Spanish. read more

Awesome barber shop. Cool guys, easy to talk to, but also respectful if all you want to do is sit quietly while getting your hair cut. I've been going here for the better part of two years and have never left with a haircut that I didn't like. They put in work, and it shows. Was down on Fourth Ave. buying a few random things when I spied "Swank". I needed a haircut that day and decided to blindly try them out since it was right there. I noticed the shop was mostly empty, but for two stylists and two guys getting their haircut. (One had been worked on, the other was just starting because he and the customer were out front talking.) I asked the one stylist inside if I needed an appointment. He said "no" and was kind enough to answer my question about the potential cost of a basic haircut, fade, etc. Then I sat down on the couch. (There was a water jug there, where presumably customers could have a refreshment on a 100+-degree day, but there were no cups in sight.) Then I proceeded to wait and wait and wait and wait. Both stylists gabbed and gabbed, droning on about nothing, sometimes even stopping the job to simply talk. In fact, one was debating about GMOs in food and how the government was purposely putting them in the vegetables to hurt black people. (Um, being part black myself -- I'm happy this stylist is looking out for us -- but come on bro, how about cutting some hair, right? He just stood their talking about this nonsense while the equally clueless customer was like, "Dude, you're so right. It's possible. I never thought of that.) Oh, god. It was excruciating. This place reminded me so much of the outdoor "Headliners" at Tucson Mall. (However, the indoor one is very good.) Both places are exceptionally slow, unresponsive to customers waiting (I mean, you couldn't bother to say something like, "Sorry sir, it'll be 10 minutes." Or, "We're busy today -- we might not get to you for awhile or maybe you might wanna go elsewhere for today -- but come to us another time.") But nope -- it's as if you're lucky that they even deem you worthy of a haircut. Then two other guys walked in. At first, I couldn't even tell if they were employees or customers, they were so poorly dressed and unprofessional. One, in front of me, even ran to window, exclaiming "oh, yeah" as a woman with tight shorts walked by with a male friend. He just wanted to take a look at her ass. Then he and his bro giggled their way to the back room. (I guess they are employees? They never came back the whole time I was there.) The entire place had a bad vibe. Bad customer service, an entitled air -- and reeked of being a place solely for dudes. I'd stay away -- especially women. A positive?: Well, the air-conditioning was good. Anyway, I ended up going back to my usual Great Clips, closer to home (making an appointment via a phone app as I drove away from this place), and eventually got a fast, wonderful cut from a woman who cares about her customer. I know better next time not to try to venture out and give my hard-earned time and money to a place like this. Not good. I was so ready to pump this place up. (I work for tons of media -- from The Arizona Republic, USAToday, AZ Pub Media and have a lot of social media followers I love to tweet out to about great finds, etc. For example, the businesses right next to theirs: The Book Stop, Ermanos Restaurant, Boxyard (little restaurants in shipping containers, mimicking the ones in the Mercado District) are all badass places to go. They do the historic 4th justice. This place? Not so much. Too bad. It's so weird to me how many businesses there are like "Swank". They don't last long though. This is my new regular place! On a walk-in haircut, Juan took his time, gave me a great cut, and improved on what little direction I was able to give. Even enjoyed a nice cold beer with my trim. Fun, outgoing staff keeps it lively. And while there's enough traditional barber stuff there to satisfy (hot lather shaves, etc.), there's also a younger 4th Avenue vibe. It's like going to see Floyd the barber....on mushrooms....in a good way. read more

I was pleased to have been greeted as soon as I walked in the door. The couches in this place are kind of gross though. I noticed that there is what could be described as a makeshift movie theater with a bunch of chairs and a big pull down screen with a projector showing old movies. The wait behind one guy getting his beard trimmed took forever. Once I finally got taken care of, most of the haircut looked good for the most part minus the last minute decision on my end to touch up the top of my hair because it ended up looking flat. Either way, I wouldn't consider the haircut worth $20. My usual place, which was booked, charges $15 and does a way better job. read more

Visited Tucson for 4 days and my teenage son needed a haircut. He got a great meticulous cut at a very reasonable price at Swank.

I was down on 4th avenue, needed a haircut, so stopped in. My hair is easy to cut and hard to mess up (so I thought), so I have no problem visiting different barbers and hair salons. I keep it short and tight. Mike at Downtown Swank Parlor gets the award for the first barber to screw up my hair in over 20 years. It was uneven on top and there was no blending from the clippers used on the sides to the scissors used on top. I asked him to trim my beard and eyebrows and he barely touched them. I had to immediately visit another barber to fix the mess. Save your cash. There are better barber shops in town at a better price. Sure they won't have the campy little theater playing Reservoir Dogs, but are you there for a haircut or to watch movies? read more

I went there and it was almost empty. There was only myself and another gentlemen who was in the chair. There were 3 barbers in the place at the time but only one was working. It was about 12 and the other two said they would get to me after their lunch so I waited for an hour. Then I asked when they'd get to me and the barber whom was working said as soon as they get their Sandwiches. So after 20 mins I sit in the chair, and I tell the barber I want a fade high and tight. The guy begins the cut and the guy spends the whole time on his phone and telling me how I need to get this special fade he does for all black guys. I told him no like 5 times and he kinda cut it in a way that was similar to the photos he showed me like 10 times on his phone then he was like that will be $20. It was my first time so I had no idea it was gonna be $20. I usually pay $15 and tip the extra 5 but since it was $20 I was still going to tip if I liked it but the cut looked nothing like I wanted so I only have him a $20. All I have to say is it's over hyped. read more

Since I was downtown and didn't want to drive to my original barber I thought it would be convenient to go to this establishment and give them a shot. Well turns out Juan doesn't know what a clean up edged mid tier taper fade is and doesn't know how to do eye brows. Quickly shows me through the mirror how my eye brows were and thought to myself "did he even touch my eyebrows?" I had to drive all the way to my original barber and they said they couldn't even fix it. Yeah I don't recommend going to this place at all. I usually tip better too by the way, it's a service to make you look decent and clean. Now I'm going out of town with a screwed up haircut and hairy ass eyebrows thanks Juan queertero and your smelly ass cigarette hands too. read more

This is the worst barber shop I've ever been to and I've been to a bunch. I have an undercut and wanted to go back to a fade. A fade. How hard is that? Didn't think I needed to explain that or bring pictures. It is a classic - should be on every wall of every barber shop. This moron brutalized it. I still have a weight line, he just pushed it farther up my head. No taper. No fade. And now no way to fix it. I asked for a beard trim; shave the neck, tighten up the beard and don't touch the mustache. He couldn't handle it. I had to tell him to not bother. Big time fail. read more
