A couple of weeks ago, I started looking for a gym closer to my house, and the Y was right down the street. The pricing is reasonable, and there are tons of options. My focus was on the weights since I do resistance training. There are tons of different options spread across 3 floors. My biggest complaint is that it gets really busy. I've adjusted my work schedule to get there before things get too busy, but it still gets more crowded than I'd prefer. Weekend afternoons aren't bad at all though. One big pro for the Y is that you can visit any Mid-TN location. There's a location near the office so I can avoid some traffic and get a workout in there if I'm feeling it. read more

I've been getting to the gym at least four days a week now for the last three months and I will say the facility is always clean. Staff is friendly and plentiful. Parking is never a problem thanks to overflow parking options at peak times. There is so much space and tons of equipment. read more

Since renovation finished in the summer of 2025, this Y has become one of my favorite workout spots. The wellness floor space is spread over several floors, from the main weight and cardio areas surrounded by the track to multiple focus areas in the new tower, including multipurpose strength training areas, basketball/pickelball courts, classrooms, and multiple areas for cardio, barbells, kettleballs, etc. This location is cleaner than other area Y locations and has ample staff to help answer questions. The new locker rooms are stocked with towels, there's a rooftop space with weights and a view, and a nice new indoor pool in the bottom floor. Parking is inexpensive with a membership and they have overflow parking a block away. read more

UPDATE!!!!!! The Downtown Y will be under construction tentatively for the next two years to expand and make it more accommodating to the growth of Nashville. Unfortunately, during this time my favorite amenities have been suspended the chapel, pool, sauna, and steam room. The temporary female locker room has relocated off the main wellness floor and is much smaller but doable. Group fitness rooms A and B have not been impacted however; the cycling studio has moved to a smaller space off the track on the fourth floor. Staff ensures that the facility stays clean and offers assistance on updates and changes as needed. read more

The renovation is stunning! So many floors of grade-A equipment. Another plus is that trainers and their clients are not hogging machines or floor space as is the norm with other gyms. And for the early birds like me, opening at 5am, is fantastic. read more

Don't waste your money on a membership here. They spent millions of dollars over the past 3 years and the new layout makes zero sense. Steam room and sauna used to be great and conveniently located in the locker room, but now you have to go 3 floors down and pack a swimming suit because it's "co-ed." I feel sorry for the women that have to share with all the creepy guys that go here. Worst of all, the steam room and sauna aren't hot at all. Completely worthless and ineffective. It's hotter to sit outside on my lawn than to waste time in whatever they just built. Really had my hopes up after waiting for their 3 year renovation to finish and I'll now be canceling my membership. What a joke. read more

The new remodeling is finished and it is absolutely beautiful, the building is amazing with so many different things to do and a lot of new amenities and additions, the turf on the rooftop area is amazing for yoga and different kind of workouts. Downtown Rooftop pool! Woohoo. The pool is open at the YMCAs. I had a staycation in town so went to the pool. If you are driving and can't find parking, their lot is $5 a day or $9 a month. Not too shabby for downtown parking lot. Anyways, be sure to bring a towel or grab one from the locker room. I went on a Friday afternoon and it was pretty empty. We played our speaker (at a decent level to not interfere with others) and got into the pool. They are kid friendly as well. read more

To grind your teeth won't necessarily destroy them. To Nashville. Barbie likes when I work out in her downtown district, but this is not that. Best Y in Nashville. This is one of the most beautiful YMCA facilities I've ever seen. The locker room is sensational. It's a palace. It's like no other. I guess it's more comprable to the big one in Raleigh North Carolina but this one is even more impressive. The workout area is sensational. It looks like a monolith. I would absolutely love to work out here but the parking situation is tricky. Members pay $9 a month and they said they might be able to hook me up with free parking for a one-off but I had to pay quite a lot for the meter just to take a shower. They let me right into the facility without any trouble and I really appreciated that as well. I'm planning to work out here - probably - in a couple months so I'll give a better review then, but it deserves 5 stars for being such an amazing palace. Parking is terrible though so we'll see if they hook me up, if they do, I'll keep them at 5. read more

The new look of the YMCA is OK! That's it! Yall spent almost 3 years remodeling and it is an absolute waste! Yall took so much space and amenities away to build another garage? Omg! There are no more racquetball rooms, the sauna is small as hell and both men and women have to share! How did yall go from having men and women having their own sauna and steam room to us sharing a small one!?? The rooftop grass area is trash. The green hills one is way better. The lobby looks like a hotel/meeting area for students and people. Way too maybe chairs and tables. Does not look like a gym. The elevator to go from floor to floor is so freaking slow, you're better off taking the stairs. Speaking of stairs, you have to go down a double flight of stairs to go to ONE level! Like WTH did yall do the space! It's more narrower for what!?? The men get a "nice" basketball court with large windows, and the women... we'll have to share sauna with men. No racquetball rooms or anything. I use to love this Y but now the greenhills is better. This Y is an inconvenience to say the least. read more

OK, I'm bumping up my stars for the Downtown Y because of the awesome event they had last Saturday. They offered a group exercise super sampler where they did 30 minute sample classes of everything they offer. How freaking genius!! Each of the instructors came in and did a preview of the classes they instruct, and I got to try out a really fun "dance it out" class with an instructor I had never had. Awesome!! I only wish I had more time that day to try out some other classes! I've never seen a Y do this, so it really made them stand out to me. You can't go wrong with any of their classes, I really enjoy everything this Y has to offer! read more

The parking makes this Y one I won't go back to. I love the YMCAs here in Nashville but there are better ones. Go to Donelson or Green hills if you want parking, nicer people (the parking lot attendant is rude), and better equipment. Great gym that has everything you need! They stopped doing daily and weekly passes due to COVID so be prepared to join their membership program. But it's worth it if you're looking for a good place to workout with locations almost everywhere. Parking downtown can be a challenge and you will have to pay, but everything else was great. read more

This location is okay. Towels steam pool and sauna available and many more. The parking garage is busy but almost always something becomes available. Unfortunately the women's locker room could be cleaner. The top of the lockers are soooo dusty! Also the fans blowing in your face in the lockers very unbearable. And the pool hours are just crazy! I like to play hard, so to maintain, I need to work out harder. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. I joined the YMCA to work off Nashville's finest dishes. I'm not sure any gym in Nashville compares to the Downtown Y. Why you ask, well for starters you can come relax at their rooftop pool. Yes you heard me correctly: you can go to the gym and not work out! Crazy, right? If that's not reason enough to join the gym I don't know what is. Alright fine, if you need another reason I have two words for you: Cardio Cinema. Movies on a big screen in a dark room with stadium style cardio equipment. Wear your emergency stop cords people, safety first! This weekend they are showing, "The Social Network." Other amenities include: steam room, sauna, pool, indoor track, BILLIONS of cardio equipment and weights, classes, meditation room and free coffee. The locker room is pretty sweet too. Plenty of showers, a large flat screen TV, sitting area and access to the lap pool. Bring a lock. So with that said, it gets busy around lunch and after 5pm, this is to be expected. Even so, I have still been able to find a machine and a locker. The parking, eh, it may take you a little longer to get a space in the garage but it's fine, just do some woo-sahs and clear your head before your workout. My final complaint, and this is a real one, is why do the TV's only get 20 channels? I want to watch Bravo people. Working out to the Real Housewives of NJ is what I do. I also want to watch Man vs. Food and fantasize about what I am going to eat after this minor detour. Is that too much to ask?? A solid 4 stars, this place has changed the way I work out. The Vandy gym was nice, this place is better. It's even better than my 24hour fitness in SF. Hands down best place in Nashville, so join but I prefer you work out before 5pm during the week. read more

I've only been a member for four days, and of the two days I've visited, the horribly rude morning parking garage attendant has ruined the experience each time. He has purposely sought out opportunities to be rude to my friend and I while in the gym, not even the parking garage. He harasses us about "following the rules." I'm unsure if he is just on a power trip, reigning over his parking garage kingdom, but he is unprofessional and his delivery is distasteful. -2/10 recommend. read more

As someone who brings a lot of guests to town, they always laugh at me when I go on and on and on about how nice our downtown YMCA is. I actually drive them by it just to see their jaw drop simply from the spectacle you can see through the windows. This facility rocks. You have endless cardio machines. Seriously, I've never seen anyone wait for one. The weight choices vary from automatic machines that digitally register every rep to classic machine systems to old school free weights. You're going to find a mechanism to work every body part in more than five ways, easily. The group fitness offerings have Los Angeles-like diversity. I'm a huge spin class fan. The spin studio added brand new bikes in December 2011 and features a full theater experience. I have a child. The caregivers in the nursery are so kind and trustworthy. My son sleeps the entire visit. The locker rooms...well...they just need a big freshener for the updog. Oh well...can't be perfect. Oh, and parking SUCKS. Ride your bike over and fight for one of the two bike racks. read more

I've been a member at the downtown YMCA for over a year (after leaving a gym in East Nashville after 3 loyal years) It was a hard decision but I'm glad I made the switch. For the price, you cannot beat the quality of the facility, staff and the classes. There are SO many to choose from and all have been very welcoming. I'm also a huge fan of the roof top pool in the summer months. It's tiny but is usually quiet and the view is amazing. Try their BOSU circuit class! read more

I just joined and it's been a great experience. They welcomed me and signed me up in no time. I go to the workout classes and they have all been wonderful. I love dancing, yoga, and am hoping to try the hydrorider classes later this month. The location is great for me and the hours are nice. The female locker room is nice and I usually don't shower there but I definitely could if I wanted. I can't wait to hit up the rooftop pool once the weather warms up! read more

The downtown Y in Nashville is nice with decent equipment. It's fairly spacious with nice amenities, but the parking situation is horrendous. I pay for parking, and I've left more than once to go to a different branch because there is no parking available, or it is such a mess that I can't get through. read more

I have some fitness plan through my insurance that allows me to attend multiple gyms. I walked into this gym, with the intent to lift weights and left after 5 minutes. In comparison to others in the area (QNTM), it lacks energy, music, new equipment, and the overall layout is not well thought out. I would not recommend this gym to someone who cares about training. If you want the other YMCA perks (Ton of cardio, pool, day care, classes, etc...then this will suit you better). read more

I used to love this place, but they just changed the towel policy, so I will be leaving. I could have accepted a rate charge, but asking for a towel at the front desk, and then having them rationed...too much. I go five times a week. That is $40 a month in parking, and now $25 a month for the towel service. You can have a separate membership with unlimited towels at other gyms for less. Whatever they make in towels they will lose in membership. I will be canceling. read more

The staff has always been welcoming, friendly, and helpful; as well, they waived my initiation fee when I moved back from NYC and rejoined this gym. The gym itself is clean with ample equipment, and plenty of amenities. If anything isn't working it's generally fixed within a couple days. Can always adjust my workout so it's not an issue. It's located in the downtown area of a city so I'm not sure why there's confusion about paying for parking -one should expect that. Perhaps a cab or public transit will suffice if you have an issue with it. Can be crowded, yes, other people love this gym as well. Having some patience and flexibility will save one some frustration...when I'm really in a hurry I politely ask to alternate sets with someone and vice versa and there's never been an issue. You might even make a new friend that way. Confused about the locker rooms??...to the left as you walk in the entrance, and I'm fairly certain there's a sign. For $60/mo you definitely get your money's worth. If you expect brand new equipment and a day spa move to a major city, join equinox and pay over $200 or whatever their prices are :) read more

I love this gym. I haven't visited other area Y's, but I'd go on a limb in saying this is probably one of the best (if not the best) large gyms in Nashville. Now, I never saw the gym before it's major reconstruction within the last couple years. All I've got to go on is how it is currently, and it's TERRIFIC. There is a two level fitness area, two large levels of cardio machines, weights and weight machines, and two small areas for stretching/free weights/etc. I wish these areas were a little bigger, or that the class studios were open to the public between classes so I could have access to a larger selection of free weights/resistance bands/bosu balls. Oh, the classes.. the variety of classes is astonishing - yoga, sculpting, lower body sculpting, cycling, yoga AND cycling in one class, step aerobics, a ballet-inspired toning class... One of the class studios is dedicated to yoga and pilates ONLY. The only complaint I have is that when a heart-pumping high energy cardio class is going on next door - I can hear/feel the thumping of the dance music a little IN the yoga room, while I'm doing yoga. Not exactly the greatest environment for the most Zen of moments... But the Y is the most affordable yoga class alternative I'm aware of. The locker rooms are large, and there are not only showers but a sauna, steam room, hair dryers, cosmetic mirrors (in the ladies' locker room, of course). And right outside of the locker room is a shoe shine station, and I just found out today you can drop off your dry cleaning at the Y! Wow, it's like an all-in-one YMCA. My experience with Y's has NOT been like this in the past. There's a play area for kids, a youth activity center downstairs, a basketball court, a pool, and a phenomenal fitness area filled with the latest technology in equipment. And yes, it's affordable and there's a sliding scale when it comes to the monthly cost if you're within a particular income bracket. At the downtown you do have to pay for parking, and paying the $8/mo fee rather than the $5/day is totally worth it. There are no contracts with the Y either, so you can stop and start up again whenever. It's remodeled, it's urban, it's got everything you need in a gym and more. For a gym rat like me, a dedicated deadlift/barbell row station is a plus. The 4 or 5 squat stations are a bonus and the massive 6000 sqft of gym space is just a royal treat. The place is tucked close to downtown, boasts ample parking (for an extra 8$ per month), gives out clean towels and has elevators. I mean what more can a guy ask for? Indoor running track? Check. A stepper machine with real steps instead of those weird skiis? Check. Swimming pool? Double check (there's a rooftop one too). A bevy of buff dudes strutting around like roosters in a barn? Check, check and mate. What would I Iike to see added? A climbing wall and an underground Banos Arabes with lush ambient sounds and a warm salt water bath! My insurance company reimburses me if I visit a gym 12 times a month and YMCA honors it. Check with your insurance if it does it too. There are a variety of classes offered, though from from opinion polls, the yoga classes leave a lot to be desired for. The Zumba classes are a riot I see given all those people with pitchforks who keep storming in and out of the exercise studios. read more

For the YMCAs in the area, the Downtown YMCA is most certainly one of the best, if not THE best, YMCA in the Middle Tennessee area. It has a litany list of amenities (see Marica M.'s post from 10/9/2012 to read her review because I think she just about mentioned every one). It also lacks something: meatheads and the women in ridiculous cleavage/rear end bearing clothing that screams "I am not really here to workout!" I cannot stand that. You could be a super model, but if you dress like that at the gym I am instantly turned off by you because you're just being a douchebag. Sexy is working out and maintaining your good health, not dressing like a skank-pot. Sorry, I digressed. So, good for the YMCA for not attracting that type. The only reason why I give the YMCA a lower score is that I find its hours of operation annoying. And that is true for the YMCAs' of Middle Tennessee in general. I really want a gym that is open at about 4:30am and closes at about 10:30pm (maybe even 11:00pm). My schedule is very packed, but I love to work out and be healthy. In the end, I always get in my workout everyday but sometimes I just wish the YMCA would make it a little more convenient for me. read more

Still not allowed to even shoot basketball by myself because basketball is "closed" as they told me. They said if they let me shoot by myself everyone will want to. I simply replied, why can't we do a 15min time slot sign in sheet like they do with the indoor pool? All the MANAGER on duty said was I would have to talk to the MANAGER on Monday....asked then why are we getting charged full price when half the gym is still not operating? She said "you'll have to talk to the manager on Monday". Met her at the lobby desk to cancel my membership bc as the manger she tried to come to 0 solutions. Just said "no" to everything. When I requested to cancel she said "ok, let me take care of that for you"....so quick to allow a member to cancel. I asked for the actual managers info, which I was given, then asked for her name. She refused to give it to me. I kid you not. I was so confused and wouldn't believe it myself so had to record my experience for proof. I can provide for this for Angie on Monday if she/they decide to reach out at all. Come Jan 1, I will never step foot in another YMCA . All she had to say was "listen I know it's weird right now and I will talk to Angie on Monday about the sign in sheet for solo shooting on the basketball courts and it may not be right away but I promise we'll have something for you next week, but for now can work with me and stick to working out vs. shooting today and I would greatly appreciate it" Done! This place rules! My husband and I have been members for a few months now and absolutely love it. The classes are great (although there's a few instructors I don't totally connect with), the facility is always super clean and the towel service is awesome. I'm a big fan of the cardio cinema too. It makes running suck way less. Side note: Just last night I was in the BOSU class (which is awesome by the way) and some guy came in and was filming a bunch of us girls towards the back on his phone. We reported it to staff and they took care of it immediately. It's good to know that they take that type of stuff seriously. read more

How sad that so many YMCAs have grown away from their original mission it seems. Inquired as a traveler what their fee was here to come in and use the showers and it's $15. In my hometown of Orlando, I was a YMCA member for many many years until it just became too cost prohibitive and I did not want to have to apply for a special scholarship. I found a different gym with not nearly as many services but for only 20% of the cost. read more

Very Gorgeous place! Equipped with such eclectic equipment that is very up to date! Also there are so many machines that is makes it nearly impossible to not find one! Out of the YMCA's I have been to this one is the most well equipped... the seven racket ball courts are very nice and there is usually at least one open. The negatives about this place is that it often seems like the main floor is like a showcase floor... Its hard to explain this but as a girl you kind of feel on display in front of the free weights. My boyfriend says sitting in front of the mirror is like an ass museum cause all you can see is a lot of butts. On the plus side the top section is a little more cozy. Also there is not a lot of directions so you just get to wander and find all the cool adventures. read more
