Truffle cheese please
Jack R.

Yum truffle cheese. They have tons of other cheeses and if you have half and hour like the guy in front of me that didn't know a soft cheese from a hard cheese they'll entertain you. Let's hurry this up bro! 45 minutes later I finally got a slice of truffle cheese to munch on. Great flavor and service. Oh, and that guy in front of me ended up buying havarti. Um, maybe this is his first time ever trying or eating cheese because it took him forever and a day to decide between PLAIN havarti or PLAIN chedder. OMG! I was going to tell him to be brave and try the dill havarti but I didn't want to be there for another hour....

Sometimes a simple, to the point review is all that's needed. We were roaming the market looking for something simple to take out for a light dinner later tonight. Decided on making a sandwich and, after picking up some rolls, headed to the Downtown Cheese shop. As you can tell from the pictures, the cheese options can be overwhelming. That's where Jake comes in. He was working behind the counter and so we told him we have eaten a wide range of cheeses, and were looking for something a little different for a sandwich. He immediately suggested a P'tit Basque cheese from France and gave us a taste. It was fantastic, so we took a hunk. We the asked if he would put anything else on the sandwich and he suggested a Rosette de Lyon, which he sampled for us alongside a fennel salami for contrast. The P'tit Basque was the winner. It's great to have a place that will help you expand your culinary horizons and knowledge of foods. And if you are lucky enough to get Jake, you will be well taken care of (actually, I overheard other cheese mongers helping people and they were all attentive and helpful). Can't wait for dinner later!

Picked up a pack of pre-vacuum-sealed iberico de Ballota and a couple of cheese chunks from the snacking bin. We unwrapped and tried them at the food court tables. The cheeses were good. Each were firm and had great flavor. The "iberico", while really tasty, lacked that distinct iberico flavor (I'd picked up a quarter pound while in Boston earlier in May). Not sure how long it had been packaged, as there were no dates, just a basic printed label with the name and price. Probably could have been another cured meat for all we know, since we didn't actually watch them shave it off the rack. Seems a little sketchy now that I think about it.

Ready, set, cheese!

Sold me expired Camembert. I should have checked the date before leaving as even the packaging itself looked old.

One of the few places you can get chauource. It's not the same as the real deal from France since it's pasteurized but still very good.

I'm sure I left stuff out but you have to immerse yourself in it to love it as much as I do. I found that their lunch hero's and focaccia sandwiches are the best in the city for under 15USD each. Every employee is helpful and goes out of their way to make sure things go well. There are a few tables inside and outside to enjoy your meal and snacks. 5 stars!

The incredible cheese selection, the curated Italian pastas, wines, and specialty foods -- it's a food lover's dream. I felt like a kid in a candy store, completely mesmerized by all the options. The staff was friendly, and everything looked so high-quality and well-presented. I was genuinely tempted to buy an assortment of cheeses to bring back home, and I still kind of regret not doing it. That said, I did have one experience that made me pause. Later that evening, as I walked by after closing hours, I peeked through the window to show my husband the shop I had visited earlier and I happened to see a few mice moving around inside the store. It was definitely unsettling to witness, especially after seeing all the exposed cheeses and displays earlier in the day. I completely understand that older city buildings (especially in places like Philly) have their challenges, and I'm sure this isn't unique to Di Bruno Bros. Still, as a customer, it did take away from the magic of my earlier visit. Overall, Di Bruno Bros. is a gorgeous and well-curated Italian market that I'd recommend visiting for its atmosphere and specialty goods but I hope management is able to address cleanliness concerns, because the store truly deserves to shine as brightly as its reputation.

This is not a typical cheese "shop" because it is a cheese wholesaler. So, how did I end up being…read moreable to review this place without buying enough cheese to feed 10-100 people? Well, I bought cheese for 100 people because I felt like it (lol). If you are one of the few avid readers of my reviews, you probably know that TooGoodToGo is what I used. This is a hard deal to get and make time for. I have been to High Fidelity and 20th St. Pizza, which uses this cheese. Why would Bandit use TooGoodToGo? More like why not. In keeping in line with vegan ideals and sustainability, minimizing waste and allowing others a chance to get a good deal on a quality product is a winner in my book. I wouldn't be surprised if this was a one man operation but a damn good one. A man who I picked up my cheese from seemed to match up with the picture of the owner on the website. A cooler with cheeses for the many people who ordered. I only could buy one when I saw this pop up. It really is out of my way and I don't have a lot of time to get this deal. It is also not offered often. So it was nice to get in on this. When you pick up cheese, you meet outside Persimmon coffee. So, the wholesaler room, wherever it is, is off limits unless you want to buy cheese for 100 people. Then maybe not haha. This or multiple places in the Bok building would be a nice place to have a Yelp Elite event. Their website shows that they used to be called Conscious Cultures. A name I like more. The name, Bandit, makes it feel like the company ran away from a grassroots environment to a more official brand. Kind of like Katy Perry's The One That Got Away but with cheese instead (rolls eyes at appropriately bad, cheesy reference). The idea that this is kind of hard to get as a deal but feasible feels like that secret that any foodie has gotta experience. It seems you can get this cheese at its regular prices at Di Bruno's and a few other local markets in (Hockessin, Skippack) co-ops, and restaurants. Say, Merzbacher's and Bandit collab at future wine events?

We ordered a variety pack, and would be hard pressed to name our favorites, but we will try as they are all so delicious. Some notable cheeses are the Zaatar, pimento, and down the shore. We thought the cave aged cheeses would be our favorites - and they are very good - but the rolls were most popular with our group and went fast! Yum. Don't hesitate to try these cheeses. And know this - the customer service is above and beyond! Great company.
