First time going to the aquarium after living in Houston for about 10 years. I would say it met expectations but didn't exceed them. Parking was easy if you arrive when they open at 10am, as was purchasing tickets in person. The aquarium itself had decent exhibits - with several sections quite cramped if you have a stroller. But still lots to see. The tigers were also pretty active but very random. We also enjoyed the outdoor area and particularly the shark train ride. Including a stop at the restaurant, we spent between 2-3 hours exploring today.

Everything was spectacular! From the atmosphere, to the food and the service! Everyone is so nice, very friendly. It's so peaceful to watch the fish while you eat. Great place -10 out of 10! If you're able, ask for Waheed! He was fantastic! So helpful and attentive!! My water glass NEVER empty! And he was just nice all around!

Probably my fault for going to the Houston Aquarium on a Sunday because it was super packed. It was honestly hard to enjoy the exhibits because of how many people were let in. The aquarium is also pretty deceiving in size. It looks like it might be two stories, but the whole upstairs is just the restaurant. We walked through, and suddenly it was over! You could easily finish the whole thing under 15 minutes, and there weren't that many different species to see. They did have a tiger exhibit, which felt a little random at the aquarium, but it was cool to experience. Parking alone was $15, which felt steep considering it was almost the same price as a single ticket. We paid $25.99 for the package with rides and the stingray interaction (Note: stingray food is an extra charge). The highlight was definitely the train ride since it takes you through the shark exhibit, and that was actually really cool to experience. However, if you get the $17 ticket, you won't have access to that, unless you pay for that singular ride. Overall, we spent more time waiting in lines for rides than actually looking at animals. If you're looking for a large aquarium with a wide variety of fish, this probably isn't the spot.

Brian the server was excellent, the food was good, and you get a beautiful aquarium scenery with your dinner. I would recommend and definitely plan to come back when I am in the Houston area.

Stopped in on a Friday afternoon for a solo lunch as a new visitor to Houston. You do have to pay for parking, which is why a Star was removed. However the staff was extremely friendly & i had a great waiter who was very attentive. The food was fresh , the drink was delicious & the view was spectacular. Family friendly environment but also great for friend, romantic or solo date.

Smaller than expected, but still a fun and enjoyable experience, especially if you're visiting downtown and want to combine this stop with others. The exhibits are engaging, and the overall atmosphere is lively. It's easy to get through in a couple of hours without feeling rushed. Not a huge aquarium, but a nice, entertaining stop if you're nearby.

I am struggling to understand why there are so many poor reviews. My husband and I loved this place. We paid $26 for the all inclusive wrist band that included the aquarium and the rides. Yes, the aquarium itself is smaller that some others but their price reflects that. The aquarium was well maintained and we enjoyed looking at all of the fish/animals. The tigers were unexpected but one of my favorite parts. I rode the carousel, the tower ride and the train. When boarding the train I assumed it just took you on a loop around the park but it was an entire show. It was awesome and the best part of the whole experience. All of the staff that we encountered were friendly and even offered to help take our photo. I really enjoyed my visit here and would highly recommend to those with children who would spend more time than we did riding the rides. For reference: our Baltimore, MD aquarium costs over $50 per adult to enter, they do not have rides and that is after you pay $25+ to park in the parking garage. Houston, be happy with what you have!

Had a great time taking my grandson to the Downtown Aquarium. We started at the restaurant where we had good food and amazing service. They make an amazing espresso martini! The gumbo is flavorful and delicious. Yes it's expensive but you are buying an entire experience eating in the middle of all the fish tanks. We paid $24 for an all day pass. I thought it was a great deal. You can go into the aquarium as many times as you'd like and ride the rides over and over again. Make sure you don't skip the train ride. It goes right into the shark tunnel which was so fun! I would definitely go again!

Ask the Community - Downtown Aquarium

I never been to this restaurant, what does it offer beside food and dining around the giant aquarium tank? Does the restaurant offer other additional experience/ activities to…

Yes- encounters with sting rays, educational activities for the kids, rides, carnival games, Ferris wheel, and a train.

Is it toddler friendly (under 2) and stroller friendly? I saw a mention of trains from a location to another so was wondering what happens to the stroller parking situation...

What parts are indoors and what parts are outdoors? (sting rays, main aquarium section, tigers, rides, and restaurant) -- is there any outdoor restaurant seating?

There are tables outside up on restaurant level, but they may not have service for them due to staff shortages. You can always inquire. If they can accommodate you they will.

Anyone know why they got rid of the cheesecake with the chocolate wall around it? It was the sole reason we drove into town every year for my son's bday.

Call the manager - - he will do everything he can to get it ready for you. Most any restaurant is going to try to accommodate their loyal clientele

Seafood restaurant is it worth to eat there for date night?

If you've never eaten here, it is an experience. Food is okay, but it is a bit on the expensive side. Service was great, and the aquarium that is the centerpiece of the restaurant is definitely worth seeing.

Can you just go for the entertainment only?

Hi, Kimberly! Yes, you are more than welcome to just come for the exhibits and outdoor area!

While dining in the restaurant can you watch or view any exhibits or large fish tanks?

Yes - when dining on the second floor there is a large tank exhibit.

    How much is parking?

$10 but don't go the food and service is atrocious

Do you have to make a reservation in order to eat at the restaurant?

I would recommend reservations if attending on the weekend...There was a small wait for us even with reservations.

Is the Aquarium Restaurant fully operational after Harvey flooding?

    Yes it is

Can they take reservations for smaller parties...like a party of 4?

Of course. The restaurant isn't big / busy at all. Nor the aquarium itself

We purchased our time entry tickets (my son's student ticket was free, but he did need to show his student ID) for Friday at 12:00. It was a rainy day, so we entered with our rain jackets and umbrellas. Parking in Hermann Park was easy, and we got a spot right close to the zoo entry. The rain was light, and came and went. The day cooler than average at 76 degrees F or so. We wandered from sight to sight, and saw just about everything. We were not able to find the Snow Leopard, nor the Howler Monkeys (including the new baby). We didn't see a bear. The elephants were just going in for feeding time. Still there was so much to see! Monkeys, otters, snakes, bugs, frogs and lily pads, zebras, antelopes, elephants, tigers, lions, leopards, ocelot, the Ant Eater was amazing! There was a sea lion exhibit where you stand in a tunnel, and the sea lions swim over you! And, there was a "cat walk" upon which the leopard would stalk--creepy! The animal attendants were very friendly and interactive, offering information about each animal, including the names and ages of the animals. They were able to answer any question I threw at them--what do they eat? Who gets a long with whom? The signage was interesting, too, with information about each species, and then a white board that is apparently updated frequently with daily news. We were there the Friday prior to Mother's Day, and there were heart signs around, identifying each of the mothers by name, wishing them Happy Mother's Day. Very sweet! Sweetest of all was the just born Gibbon (just 10 days old). It was in its mama's arms, and dad and her other son were playing nearby. The family was incredibly sweet! Dad and 3-year-old son Marv were taking care of each other while Mom was taking care of baby. And watching them swing along their trees was so fun! Favorite exhibits included the Gorilla and the Gibbons. Next time we visit Houston, we will be back on a sunny day, perhaps in the morning, to see if we can find even more!

The museum has a parking garage that is convenient but fills up quickly. The cost is a $30 flat rate and the spaces are tight, so reverse parking is key. General admission, planetarium, butterfly exhibit, and special exhibits are all individually priced. We spent $226 for a family of four to see two special exhibits (including general admission + parking). The Terracotta exhibit was smaller than we hoped -- more smaller artifacts and limited interactive elements and terracotta warriors on display. The King Tut exhibit was more memorable-- more immersive, better videos, and a clear narrative about his life, death, and discovery. Food is the biggest drawback. The Element Grill closes at 3pm, so late-day visitors are left with pre-made café items from the Periodic Table next door. This included cold cut sandwiches, burgers/hot dogs sitting under warmers, canned soda and bags of chips at a premium price. Recommend to visit the HMNS on a Tuesday 5-8pm for free general admission or consider a membership to save on costs.
