I'm at Downey high school for summer school and the food is boring, I recommend not making a very subtle joke online as they send you up to the annex to talk to a administrator and tell your parents a very exaggerated version of what you actually did. plus, they have very little times between breaks! they are about ~15 min, but at my middle school, it is nearly 30 min! My experience at Downey high schools was horrible. If you get assigned Mr. Gutierrez for math immediately switch out. He will fail you for no reason at all. He is so incredibly rude and only cares about the boys lacrosse team. I am now taking summer school because of him, waking up at 9am while his lazy ass gets to stay home. It's a shame so many people are rating Downey High School based on one experience completely unrelated to the education component itself. The front office staff don't teach, they are attendance clerks. They don't get paid to make friends, entertain or even serve the public. They get paid to manage the attendance of over 4,000 teenagers. They have to deal with teachers, administration and unruly parents all day long. If you were in their shoes, you'd probably be stressed out too. Unlike most of you, my encounters with the front office staff have always been pleasant. If you have a suggestion or complaint, consider taking it up with someone in charge, like an administrator. If there are none available at the time of your visit, a simple search on the school website will provide you with all the information and email addresses of the various people in charge for you to reach out to. Office staff Natalie? instructed me to just walk in and talk to a counselor without directions to where the counselor office was located. When I asked for directions, she just repeated to walk in. Basically I was invited to just wondering around the halls. They did not ask for any ID or to sign in. Yikes. I recently attended a sports entertainment event hosted, though not organized by Downey High School in the Downey High School gym. During the course of said I event, I had occasion to use the restroom just outside the gym. Even by high school gym bathroom standards, this disappoints. There is no door, just an open entryway and the urinal is close enough that anyone walking by could see what you're doing. But that's not what really upset me about this bathroom. What really upset was that there were no hand drying apparatus of any kind! No paper towels, no air dryer, nothing! Avoid if possible. read more

Quite disappointing and unbelievable how the counselors threat the student and some parents that do not look on their "social and physical status"... I came here to enroll my younger sister in the school because we moved in Downey and it looked really convenient and closer for my sister to attend in Downey High School. When I go to the main office I asked the receptionist for the procedure for enrollment. OK... I followed their sheet requirement and the documents that they needed. I go to the main office and this staff started talking to me with a rude tone... OK... (In my mind I was super irritated wanted to slap that b*tch!) She belittles me (even though she is Latina herself [what a shame]!) by telling me rudely that she doesn't qualify because I don't have the lease contract, my parents needs a current ID, and my sister needs her high school grades. There's a problem... 1. My parents' ID has the old address and to renew a new ID it takes two weeks to get it. 2. Same thing with the lease (copy) contract; we moved less than 5 days ago. 3. My sister just graduated from middle school, so she does not have any grading record of a high school grade. Stubborn the counselor, she insisted those things or she cannot attend to the high school. I went to school almost all 4 years. (Almost because i started freshman year in April) and it honestly was a great time of my life so far. (so far being i'm only 19) there was SO many amazing teachers, and my counselor never stopped fighting for me to graduate. Mrs. Curriel is truly a gem, and I couldn't thank her enough. There were and are some rude teachers and a horrible lady in the office who always dressed inappropriately and always gave my dad a disgusting attitude. Other than that, I was blessed enough to have Mr. Hansen as a theatre teacher his last year and the Mr. Nelson has the new theatre teacher for my junior and senior year. Better than warren? 4th of July Fireworks Review Only. This is a little kept secret for only Downey residents (maybe some Bell Gardens, South Gate residents too). Downey High throws a mean FREE awesome 4th of July fireworks show. I'm not sure if this has been an annual event for a few years now, but glad I know someone who lives in Downey and invited us down for their 4th of July festivities this year. It was awesome. NOTE: I think this event is sponsored and organized by a Christian Church. They have live bands playing before the fireworks show (probably Christian bands), some preaching and they have food, CDs of the band on sale and lots of Porta-Potties and regular restrooms. The stage and tons of cushioned seating and stadium seating is on the football field. Downey High's football field can accommodate well over 5,000 with the extra seating for the fireworks show. The fireworks show also lasted almost 20 mins! WOW!!!! You're very up close to the fireworks also. Good job Downey High for setting this up! read more

I went to this high school and graduated in 2012, and all I have to say is my very best and most favorite and memorable Downey High moment was when I was meeting very cool friends from general ed classes (whoever's one of my peers, like Juliana Rose Sanfelippo, Bonnie Shilling, Candice Potvin, and Erika Madrigal for example. The only disability I have is autism, but other than that, I can speak and listen very well just like most of the general ed students of the school, not like some of the special ed students. That's right, I'm so lucky I'm mildly autistic and highly functional. ), God those memorable and nostalgia memories is making me wish a time machine is invented so that I can go back in time, remember those memorable and nostalgia memories, and do some missed opportunities I wish I've done like go from classroom to classroom with any one of them so that I could have been in general ed classes (especially with one of my close friends from now) and be part of the Downey Amigos Club along with the varsity swim and water polo team, basketball, dance, track, and wrestling activities, that way my life would've been much better because I DEFINITELY missed out on all of them in high school, and of course, I would've undeniably been much more well-behaved and treated positively and very well, which is the way I want to be treated. All of this is to show what a dedicated, imaginative, and inspiring person I am. Nuff said! read more

1 star to post. Front office staff is rude, unprofessional, and bougie. You answer phones that's it get over yourselves. For graduation you should have included everyone not just the jocks, the clubs, but also acknowledged students who are in special education. They to should be recognized for all there hard work to graduate as well, included in the youtube graduation ceremony for class of 2020 and 2021, pictures should have been added of them as well, included to also participate on stage and read a speech or sing a song at the graduation. I went to Downey High all four years and it was awesome. We have a lot of school spirit and the teachers are great. Class of 2009!

Due to the pandemic I was not able to see my child walk the stage for graduation. But what really disappointed me was how the setup for graduation took place. A video streamed, that I feel more effort should have been put into it. All that was seen was the social groups which were the same students over and over. But this school has so many more students. Why couldn't they say each seniors name, why couldn't they post random picture of students who were to themselves or quiet and not in groups, so they felt apart of something. And why were there no pictures or mention of the Special Education students who are ALWAYS left out. DO a better job Downey high with involving all seniors to make there last year memorable rather than letting a group of kids choose there circle of friends to be in repetitive posts. Not everyone is a social light and that's okay. Make sure this upcoming year you choose and encourage other students and special ed students to partake in the development for senior year memories. I have one child left there. Hope to see change this upcoming year. And lastly get rid of the office staff. There so rude and act like there to good. You work in an office and sit down all day and answer phones. Id respect you more if you were the janitors in stead of trash talking all the parents and students while I've sat there and waited to speak to a counselor. SO unprofessional. Some of the Front Office Staff that I have dealt with the couple of times that I have had to go in physically were very rude. It's very, very rare that I need to pick my Daughter up early and the one time I did, the lady (I unfortunately didn't get her name) was very quick to dismiss the idea of calling her classroom saying there was no phone in the room but one of the nice Student workers corrected her and even knew the number. Parents/adults should not be treated that way. The Students deserve respect as well. The few times my Daughter went in with a note, they didn't bother to look at her. Not acceptable. Do not work in a school office if you don't "have the time" or "aren't in the mood" to be bothered. That is your job. You need to give respect to earn respect. Don't just teach the students that, teach the staff...especially the front office. That is not the best representation of Downey High. read more

For being Downey's signature high school with a lot of history, this school falls extremely flat compared to other school in the same county. It seems like the hire anyone to work here. I went to school here for two years back in 2002 and didn't learn much. I learned twice as much at my other school in only one semester than I ever did here. Parents, I would suggest enrolling your child/children in a private school or get a permit so that they can attend a better school in a different nearby district. I arrived at the main office and filled out a form for my transcript to be sent to me. Karen says it will be ready tomorrow. I reminded her I wanted it sent and she said ok. I waited, Saturday....then Monday and still no transcript. I called on Monday and Karen told me she sent the transcript on Friday. Thursday came and still no transcript. I called and picked up the transcript myself. When I got the envelop, bitch karen asked if I paid. If I did not paid how was the transcript printed??? On the envelop was stamped the schools address at the top left corner, yet my address was not on the envelop and there's no stamp on it, but at the top right corner was Friday's date, which was when it was printed. Obviously bitch karen has no intention of ever sending my transcript even though I marked the "sent" box on the form and I paid $5.00. I called her afterward and asked her about it and she comes up with a lame excuse of not remembering if it was sent or not. If you need your transcript sent bitch karen likes to play games and withhold your transcript. She is not capable of doing her job and she is racist against minorities. An old woman like karen gets a job at a high school so she can FEEL she's smart. Not doing her job and withholding someone's transcript is a form of bullying. It's posted on the Downey Unified School District website that there's zero tolerance for bullying. karen should get with the program or get out! read more
