My family loves this YMCA we were going here for a couple yrs. We got to know so many wonderful staff here that always went above and beyond there duties. They always made us feel like FAMILY!!! Me my hubby and our 5 children took advantage of all there many different programs they had to offer. Especially the swimming ones like water polo for the kids was so fun and Awesome!! The staff are mostly young college students who are very awesome with kids i always felt safe when leaving any of our children in there hands. My oldest son Sam was coming here and getting very intense swimming lessons and he was getting so good from the help of all the wonderful swim staff. They would allow him to help out in the swim lessons and teaching him leader skills. We will never forget all of the awesome people we met here! We took our kids not only to swim classes but also dance and gymnastics, which they all loved! We would workout out in there bottom gym while kids did activities and or played in the daycare room which is awesome play time for kids to socialize. The equipment is great in all rooms i love the fit linx to rate how your doing. I really love this YMCA and we are no longer in the area and we cant find one like this one because its a diamond in the ruff a hidden gem or gym:) so if you are in there area and you have little ones and you want them to have new a great experiences bring them here you wont be sorry and your kids will thank you. We all love you guys at the Downey YMCA!!! read more

They have a pool, this is the only item on the whole list thats a positive and why they got a 2 star versus a 1. I hate to critique the heck out of this place because i feel the staff mean well but as business this place is scary. ZERO UPKEEP: 1.They have racketball rooms that were just converted into anything other than racketball 2.The top floor gym circuit is non existant, wtf why, please do something with this spot. Just a bunch of left over garage sale level equipment tossed up there 3.Locker room here has people sleeping on couches ( never bothered me), it seems like a place you go if the wife kicks you out or are a transient. 4. Outside has an old left over workout setup for pullups etc but bring gloves, no way to sanitize it after a workout 5.PRICE is insanely expensive for what you get, it is cheaper to go to Crunch and in some cases 24 hour fitness and for that cost can get a trainer to help you at these other locations. This place only gets a 2 star because it has a pool else i would give it a 1. If this place could come up with a fee just for people using the pool i would be back but trying to charge 50$ a month is ridiculous. read more

See edit below regarding handicap accessibility. This Y does have a pool. That's true. But if you have ANY issues with stairs, it won't do you any good. The changing rooms for the adults are on the second floor. There is no elevator. (So basically up a flight of stairs, change, down a flight of stairs, swim in the pool.) When I asked about disability access to the pool, I was told that I could wear my suit under my clothes, which would mean going home in a wet swim suit. (The guy who gave us the tour was decidedly unhelpful. He couldn't seem to comprehend why I had a problem with the set up... even though I walk with a cane and had told him I was there to build leg and back strength.) Update: After talking to the membership manager, I have learned that there is access to the pool via the Family Changing Room. There are showers in there and stalls with curtains. The rule seems to be that adults can't be nude in the shower (in other words: Shower with your swimsuit on). The stals can be used to change into and out of swimsuits. That's why right now, this is a two star review. It's a compromise, I guess. Still need to decide whether we are going to do this or not. read more

This place was like my second home. They had everything related to fitness and sports. The Olympic size pool was always clean and well monitored with a life guard. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I loved going here with my husband and 3 children. read more

I LOVE this gym. Yes it smells like crap and looks like it's about to come tumbling down you, but it's my favorite place to work out. I've had membership @ Bally's before. Sure the Bally's facility is huge, nice and of course, NEW, but everyone working out there is just showing off. You can't even get a damn machine cause the douche bag trying to look like Paul D from the Jersey Shore is too busy on the treadmill staring at some chick's ass. And let's not talk about the girls who sit on the weight machines texting away while people who ACTUALLY want to work out have to wait for her skinny asses to get up. Point is, although the Y isn't a fancy place to work out at, these are ppl that are dedicated to their fitness. For the most part, all the members are friendly. Of course there are those 1 or 2 snobby women who think highly of themselves, but those women are everywhere. I love the Y and I wouldn't join any other gym around. read more

I truly wish I could rate it higher. I have long supported YMCAs. The Downey members are nice and generally so are the staff. There are bike racks for us bike commuters which is a plus. And this Y is centrally located in Downey. Unfortunately, this Y is in disrepair and dirty. Supposedly new management is coming in August so we'll see if that means there will be changes. I never see the cleaning crew with mops or cleaners or cleaning supplies. The lockers, floors, bathrooms are dirty and after a month, I see dirt and grime that hasn't been removed in the same places. In comparison to other nearby Y's, it is many levels below what one would expect from a Y. And the WiFI has been out for a couple of days. And there are very used and ripped sofas (though covered with transparent packing tape), recently brought in (three weeks ago) to the Women's Locker room lounge. Several members, including myself have complained. A staff member told me that it has been there for years when in fact, it was brought in at the end of June 2018. Either he was misinformed or he made it up. Not great. He really should have reassured me that the complaint will be taken to the manager or director. That didn't happen. First, the sofa is a health hazard. It looks like it was picked up off the side of the road. Mites, bed bugs and who knows what else could easily be transported into this space with these large sofas that shouldn't be there. It also sends a message to the members that a trash picked sofa is ok. It's not. In short, a new manager will be best served speaking directly to the members for feedback. There is much to do. I checked out the Y in East Whittier which is in excellent condition and clean. I have to ask why is there the disparity? Shouldn't all Y's be funded and supplied with the same resources? Shouldn't they all be held to the same standards? I'll stick it out for now because I believe that this Y can be brought up to a decent standard. I hope so because it's an important resource in the community. If after some time, the new manager fails to make sweeping changes, expect this member and many others to continue their exodus from the Downey YMCA. UPDATES: The Y responded positively and they took out the sofas in terrible shape and replaced them with a much better one in good condition. Kudos to this change!! I hope that the next improvement involves supplying the cleaning staff with cleaning carts that have cleaning supplies like mops, rags, cleaning liquids, buckets, the usual. It's encouraging that the response to the sofas was swift. I look forward to seeing this Y continue to improve. read more

Locker room is nice, showers, sauna & steam room with a couch and TV in the men's locker room as well as the men's small gym within the locker room. Weight room has a good amount of machines and free fall weights with 2 rope machines and squat machine. A small track around the weight room and Zumba room. Cycling club looks very energetic! Gymnastics, basketball and swim for the youth! read more

Our favorite YMCA location. Great for classes (swim, zumba, yoga, aqua aerobics, etc) and it is always clean with plenty of parking. Particularly for young women, it always feels safe since it's a family gym. It appears the pandemic has led to its temporary closure. I sure hope they reopen. My family and community definitely miss it. read more

Get what's expected with the long standing organization. I do like that the family rate is reasonable. Generally clean considering high influx of people. I like that they have an app to keep your key card in and this particular lets you add it to your Wallet. The app isn't very beneficial otherwise. Downey isn't on the list etc issues need to be updated and accessible. I know - one more app but I don't want to keep up w that card or pay $5 to replace. read more

I'm just dissapointed on how they treat a customer. I saw somebody in the front desk asking for a valuable things he left in the locker room and without hesitation the guy receptionist said "NO NOBODY REPORTED IT" thats rude, he didn't even try to look at it first before he said the word and he sounded like he doesn't care at all. What kind of customer service is that. I have nothing to say about the facility, for me its quiet is good. Gym quiptments are exactly what i need and swimming trainers are really helpful for my kids. Only the customer service at the front desk staff have a problem running the place. Be kind to your customers. read more

I worked out here as a friend's guest more than a handful of times. It's bigger inside than it seems from the outside since it's 3 stories. Everything is separated into rooms. The downstairs cardio room. The downstairs weight room. The pool room. The basketball room. The racquetball room. The room with the mirrors. The bathroom. I was about to get a membership here since their initiation fee is the cheapest than surrounding competing gyms in the area. The monthly rate here is about the same price as the surrounding competing gyms in the area so when a different gym with more operating hours had a sale on their initiation fee it was just about the same price so I went with the other gym with more operating hours. My friend made fun of me when I considered getting a membership at the Y because she said that their gym is a joke. I disagree. If you're serious about working out and know how to work out then it won't matter how nice or new the equipment and building of your gym is, as long as the gym has a treadmill and weights (which the Y has) then any fitness junkie would be happy. read more

I have been a member here since I was very small. Took swim lessons here and have worked out at the Y since I was 14. On one hand, I love that the gym is accessible and lacks a lot of the losers that just like to be seen at the gym. However, this gym has several negatives: -The cardio room has 6 old tube televisions, 3 of which do not work. Is it too much to upgrade to a few (working) flat screens? And please, no more Fox News. Who needs that kind of aggravation when trying to workout? -The patio area just off the cardio room has been turned into storage for old office furniture. At last count, there were 3 office chairs and 4 filing cabinets sitting outside, clearly not being used, but stored. -Nearly all the seats on the weight machines in the cardio room are torn. Not a deal breaker, but definitely something that could use some attention. -The room with the spin bikes has (what appears to be) a moldy floor, and speakers that don't work. On Tuesday morning, the instructor was using 2 dell desktop speakers (yes, the kind you would plug into your computer) to blast music to the class. I don't think I have to elaborate for anyone to know how much that sucks. -While I am very thankful that they have reinstated Sunday hours, being open from 12-3pm isn't exactly what I'd hoped for. Maybe 10-5? 9-3?? -I understand that the Y is a family-oriented organization, but I would really appreciate it if the staff would take more time to make sure that kids under 14 are not in the cardio room screwing around. Actually, I'd appreciate them moving anyone along who is in the cardio room taking up machines who isn't using them as they were intended to be used. I have read several complaints about the parking, but I've learned that it's all about timing with the Y. I go during the week either first thing in the morning (5am) or in the evening (around 8pm) and never have trouble with parking. Saturdays and Sundays seem to be pretty open as well. I think when you go during peak times (3-6pm) you should expect a busy parking lot. Overall, I like the Y, and I put up with its flaws because I really don't want to go to either of the big box gyms in town. But I really hope they read these reviews and decide to throw a little money at improving some of these details to make members feel like they are really getting their money's worth. read more

My issues with this location are as follows: -parking: parking in the morning and afternoon is terrible -building: everything here is outdated. The building is also old. -the structure of the building is odd. Its like a maze. They have 3 stories. 1 floor has the reception, pool area, activity rooms, fitness center, kiddy area, children locker rooms, and gym. 2nd floor has the adult locker room, and third floor has the weight room and track -the price here is much more expensive than other areas. $76 a month for family and $105 initiation fee. Which isnt that bad considering that when I signed up here years ago I payed over $200+ with the financial assistance. But its still expensive! -swimming classes are expensive as well. An average of $40 + for each child! Pros: -they have an indoor pool, which is open all year -they have free tumbling and exercise classes for youths and adults My husband and I were debating on whether signing up for a membership at Maywood YMCA, South Gate park, or here. The only reason this location was considered was because their pool is open all year round, because its an indoor pool. And since my family and I are avid swimmers we need a pool thats accessible when we deem to use it. But because this place is so overpriced, we decided to go to Maywood YMCA. Its a lot cleaner, modern, and cheaper. They gave a promotion going on this month, sign up for just $50 this month and you get the first month free. That means we only pay $50 for the registration fee. Thereafter we pay $57 a month. Yeay for savings! :) anyway In all Downey is severely overpriced considering its a "wealthier" neighborhood with crappy parking, service, and building. Just not worth the drive. read more

Dissapointed that they are now the ONLY YMCA facility making it nearly impossible for low income youth to partake in ballet and dance classes. Commencing Jan of 2013, they're requiring quarterly fees in excess of 50.00 per class, per child..something many of the patrons cannot afford. Working with them to make a change. Management, ownership and the district office have not responded to our requests. This is going to be a sad new year for so many children. read more

This facility is just about the money they claim is for the children. Asked or look around and see how many children with disabilities are around (NONE) and the after school coordinator is prejudice of children with disabilities. The Downey YMCA is a great place if you looking for a family atmosphere to bring your kids or simply work out. They have an array of workout classes and great instructors who are knowledgeable and willing to answer any of your questions in particular Rocio, all her classes are awesome and she is a wealth of information. The staff in the front desk is awesome if you ever need help with anything ask for Mikey Martinez also knowledgable, polite and very helpful. As for the facility it is an older and does need upgrades but if you want a low key, family oriented this is the place for you. read more

While my daughter is in class, I get my workout in. My daughter (who is 3yrs) is enrolled in Gymnastics then immediately after she has ballet, 2xs /week. That's about 1 hr 20 min of workout time. The most annoying thing about this place is the lack of update on the financial assistance application. They said it was only going to take 30days for review, however it has been 2+ months now and still no update (when I asked, they didn't even have my file on hand, they said I needed to come back at a less busier time) read more

I am trying to figure out if this is a YMCA or a homeless shelter? I go into the mens locker room and there are people sleeping on the couches and no place to sit. On top of this I have been stopped 3 times entering the YMCA by the staff. Each time they have me sign some paper work or ask me questions about which YMCA I am supposed to go to. This got annoying fast, Most YMCA's will let you walk straight in after you scan your ID. The only reason I am leaving two stars instead of one, the Management has been kind towards me at times, showing me around but the staff is terrible read more

They do not offer 1-day trials or guest passes. $25 per day per visit. Memberships are $45 a month. I came to visit the basketball gym and see if it would be worth buying a membership. I called before my visit to see if the court was not being occupied by some other non-basketball sport like indoor soccer or a boot camp. The staff member said the court was not reserved so I show up and it was in fact being reserved. Please have a person that knows what is going on at the business answer. They literally put me on hold 5 minutes and still gave me the wrong information. Parking lot does get overloaded however, there is street parking. read more

Group classes, like zumba, don't have high quality trainers as I've taken zumba at other venues with way better instructors. Also, one of my friends recently had their belongings stolen from their locker at this Y. Tells you a lot about the kind of people who come to this establishment. read more

This review is solely based on the cycling classes. I signed up for a week guest pass because I wanted to try the gym out but most importantly the cycling classes. The front desk rep told me that its best to show up 30mins early to reserve a bike. Right off the bat I already didn't like that. They informed me because there was only 14 bikes. I've gone to another YMCA and they always had enough bikes to accommodate their guests. The room itself is quite small. The instructors were decent though (only went twice) and they definitely do give you a good workout. Its really a shame that that they don't have enough bikes. Even with arriving once 30mins early all the bikes were already taken. Based solely on this I will not be joining the gym. Clean location though and the front desk reps are helpful. read more

Overcrowded condition in the Swimming pool and in the weight room, No parking on peak times no Air condition on the Gym/oven. Staff what staff? First time member and last time member. I've been to other YMCA and they have a good control of letting people in, this YMCA has no idea how many people just walk in without checking in, I was witness to 10+ people coming through the exit helping by others. Where do I start, I came in to sign my daughter up for after school program at YMCA, filled out the papers, with all updated information, made a blank check, what was suppose to be easy clearly went all wrong, they open two accounts under my name, with wrong address, charging my checking account twice, they my checking account right, but everything else wrong, every time I kept calling them they charged me twice they would say no they didn't, that their system shows I was charged once, somewhere clearly there is a disconnect, frustrated and calling back and forth they finally got back to me, saying their were wrong and found out they open 2 accounts under my name, I spoke to Rene Rubacava , who is in charge and he apologizes , meanwhile we went over in detail what account to keep open and the one to closed and he still got it wrong!!! Alex at the front desk and Howie are always very polite! Always very courteous and always go the extra mile at the front desk. Also Andrew in swimming goes the extra mile to make sure my daughters are comfortable in their swimming classes. The swimming staff Always keeps me posted where they need to go. The swimming coaches and lifeguards are so courteous and friendly. Juan has been very helpful with working with my daughters schedule and always tries to help however he can. As far as other employees are not always that helpful, it's a hit and miss. Especially the girls at the front desk always have an attitude. The girls in the daycare are lazy do not interact that much with the children. My daughters do not feel comfortable staying there while I work out because they say they are mean especially the heavier set lady that has been there forever. I hope the attitude of the girls in the front desk and daycare take notes from the swimming staff, Juan and Andrew, Alex and Howie! Kudos to them! One last thing that I really don't like is that there is no lockers just for girls. There is an all boys bathroom/lockers but not for little girls. Kind of sexist for us to be going into 2019. Little girls need there privacy which they don't have. read more
