I don't want to give a star rating because I've only done three or four drop in classes here. However, I just want to warn people about the hot classes. I've gotten bad migraines after two of the hot classes here, both of which I found pretty boot-camp-y and un-yogic. One of them, the instructor was yelling about " Making your legs the same length " and " uneven limbs " the whole time. Well, I have many close to me with physical deformities/abnormalities--myself included--and that just completely took me out of it. I've had more empathetic experiences at Bikram inspired Hot 26. If you're very low body fat and love to take the most intense Power Flow classes on offer, this might be a good place for you. I have been practicing for six years and I'm in decent shape generally and on the intermediate end in most classes--but I was on the floor and ended up with bad migraines here. The Iyengar class was the opposite, very slow and jerky with extremely detailed cueing. Not a workout at all, but nice if you like Iyengar (I found here that I don't really). read more

I've been coming to Down Under School of Yoga for a few weeks now and cannot say enough wonderful things about this studio! They're currently offering a $30 for 30 days of unlimited yoga for new customers. The studio is conveniently located off the C Line at the St. Mary's stop. There is street parking available as well. The studio offers lockers, restrooms, and showers. They also have mats and towels to borrow in case you don't have your own. I love that they offer a heated flow - like hot yoga but not as intense. Their class schedule offers various levels of experience and various types of classes all throughout the day. My favorites are the regular Flow and Heated Flow classes. Every instructor I've had has been extremely kind, welcoming, and encouraging. They are so knowledgeable and want to help you get the most out of your practice. And all the fellow Yogis are kind and welcoming. It's a nice community and a wonderful place to practice. After my trial month is up I will definitely take advantage of their monthly membership and student specials. read more

I was a loyal customer to Down Under for quite some time, but recently had to get surgery and so I needed to put a pause on my membership. I reached out and explained that I was getting surgery but was not sure when I would be cleared to return. I was told that a pause was placed and to reach out whenever I was cleared to come back. Two months passed and I was charged 150$ when I had not unpaused my account or taken a class. I reached out and explained what had happened and that I was not cleared to come back yet. I was told that I would not be refunded and given their pause policy (which conveinently was never given to me when I asked for the pause). I really liked Down Under but this was super slimey of them and I will most definitely be taking my business elsewhere. I highly reccomend reading all of their fine print policies as they are NOT upfront and like to sneakily charge their customers who are sick and trying to get better from surgery :) Not good business ethics! read more

I decided to try the newcomer's deal of 30 days for $30. As someone who had never practiced yoga much before, I had an amazing experience at Down Under! Not only were all the props provided (including mats!) for free, the studio was extremely clean. Easy-to-use lockers were also available to use for free. The showers were amazing! The instructors were also all so amazing! They all knew how to cultivate a love for the practice and really knew how to teach! Even as a beginner, I was able to follow along decently well in most of the classes I tried (Flow Foundations, Flow, Heated Flow, Iyengar, Relax and Renew, Slow Flow). The Brookline studio is also in a great location - access to a great Asian smoothie shop (perfect for an after-class healthy treat!), Whole Food's, Trader Joe's, and tons of good restaurants. My only regret is that I won't be able to continue at this studio now that my 30 days have ended. As a student on a budget, I simply cannot afford the normal monthly rate! However, I intend to continue practicing yoga, and I will always recommend this studio to others! read more

The good thing about this place is that it's the best yoga place in town. Hands down the best class selection, Flow classes are a full workout + you get Yoga feelz, the "sun circle" in the room downstairs makes you feel warm and lovely, instructors are awesome, the place has a spa-like feel. They even taught me how to do the crow pose! *insert grateful cry here*. The bad thing about this place is that it's was too expensive for me to attend regularly and now I can't do yoga anywhere else, because no other place comes anywhere close. I love Down Under Yoga. It can get pretty packed, but I've learned that most studios can. The instructors at Down Under are all welcoming and provide great cues and corrections. The heated flow classes are challenging, but leave you feeling brand new afterwards. Most classes I've taken were led by Claire or Gregor. Both are fantastic and keep you motivated throughout the session. If you want to take a yoga class that pushes you, but leaves you feeling rejuvenated, go to Down Under! The heated flow classes can get verrrry warm - I've found that some classes feel warmer/tougher than others, but haven't found a pattern to figure out why. For anyone wanting to come here before work, the studio has showers, but from what I recall, you have to bring your own towel and toiletries. Namaste! read more

Posting after my first class at the Brookline Location. I took the Flow Fundamentals class and it was great! The crowd: lots of different sizes and shapes of people. Many different ages and level types. No fancy lululemon yoga attire is required haha. The teacher: very knowledgeable both about body physics as well as yoga in practice. Super professional and open to questions. Committed to making sure everyone learns. The space: very clean, classes can fill up fast so get there early even if you signed up for a class online. The lesson: a good pace, works on refining basic yoga poses which many of us have been doing wrong for a long time. Gives us tips we can integrate into at home practice. Tells us how we can know if we are doing it correctly or not via muscle memory. read more

I've been trying yoga classes here and there and none had really clicked for me . . . but Gregor's heated flow class at Down Under got me hooked! Every instructor and staff that I've interacted with has been welcoming and helpful. I've especially been enjoying classes with Gregor, Julia, and Brittany. The classes seem to be mix of students at different levels. I'm a beginner so I need a little help getting to some of the poses -- the instructors are skilled at cueing for the different poses and guiding you to make adjustments. Every heated flow class has been a great work out and you come out feeling that positive yoga vibe. I highly recommend! read more

I have been doing yoga at the Brookline studio for about a year. The teachers at this studio are friendly and professional. They are pretty good at teaching, and comparatively as good as anywhere in the area. Recently the studio was having some discussion regarding the metoo movement. They were talking about adopting some strategies for students to opt out of contact with teachers. It is hard for me to believe that adult women are paralyzed or helpless in class, and even harder to believe that women do not already have the ability to express themselves without some sort of esoteric communication strategy supplied to them by the studio. In general this sort of thing strikes me as going against the grain of the women's liberation movement, since I already believe women to be competent to do this thinking on their own. Since there have apparently been no incidents at this studio, the whole discussion was awkward to begin with, and more in line with the cultural progressive currents than about the needs of students. In any case, no harm done. In truth, I don't understand where ideas like 'trigger warnings' and 'safe spaces' originate from. To me, there really are no safe spaces in the world, and it does a disservice to perpetuate the sort of illusions that we live in separate safe zones, since you are not only still not safe, but you have decided you are not going to adjust or learn anything new. Overall I can recommend this studio. read more

I love the classes and all the instructors are wonderful. But the chaos in the entry just kills it for me. There's no room to move, to breathe, to change. People's sweat (those who just came out of heated flow) is dripping all over you, the floor.... No place to put shoes, to hang your coat.... It was ok in the summer, we would just step outside after class and get dressed on the street, but now that it's cold outside, that's no longer an option. The place is just poorly designed and way overcrowded. As two classes end and two are about to start, everyone overlaps in one tiny space. I keep coming back because the classes are great, but whatever peacefulness I get during the practice, I lose it when I step out. read more

Going since roughly 2016... this is hands the best yoga studio I've been to (have moved a lot). The quality of teachers & thus classes are outstanding, especially regarding alignment which has transformed my practice. I'm especially fond of Natasha R, Kate H, Louie, Kate R, & the entire Ashtanga faculty. Loved my 300 hr YTT @ DUY. Confidently endorse all of the teachers & staff. Amazing studio. But you're looking at reviews to figure out which class to go to, right? So here's the skinny on several teachers. The styles vary tremendously and if you love a sweaty workout class, don't pop into an Iyengar class and say, "oh, that class sucked." It's like going to an Italian restaurant and saying that there was no good sushi. Patricia Walden: World. Class. Seriously. But she's of the Iyengar style, which means lots of long holds, few postures, lots of props. There are often a lot of older people in these classes, but don't be fooled for a second. Many of them could school you with a five-minute-plus headstand. You will probably not sweat, but poses can get intense when you hold something that long. Not a "workout" class in the traditional sense. Natasha R.: Also world class, IMHO. What I love about her is that she truly focuses on alignment. In theory that should make her classes great for beginners, but they're listed as 2/3 level... possibly because she expects a basic understanding of the standard cues in a class (heel to heel/arch alignment, drop tailbone, etc). I generally don't sweat a ton in her class, but it is again an opportunity to slow down your pace a bit and really focus on the signals your body is sending you. She inspires you to rework postures like chaturanga for months to get them just right. She's that good. Angelina H. (usually HEATED classes) & Justine W.: Both favorites of the workout set, myself included in this bunch. There will be times when you are really pushing hard in a class, but for me, that's when my brain finally turns off so... I love these ladies. They often set up with a headstand / headstand prep at the very beginning of class after a warmup. You're definitely going to be playing with inversions with these two. Lots of alignment cues, but they also back off and let you get quiet too. Justine, can you please teach at Brookline?? She teaches at the Newtonville location so she really shouldn't be on this list, but I'm waging a personal Yelp campaign to bring her to Brookline. Please! Masaaki (HEATED classes): He is the closest to an old-world, classical Indian-style yoga teacher I've ever come across (in the U.S.) You're not going to get music or much talking in his class - just quiet cues, lots of breath emphasis, and loads of opportunity to come front and center with your body and your mind. He also makes himself very available after class in case you have any questions, where he'll then take 10 minutes of his own time to help your align a pose better next time. I adore him, but know that he's a no-frills-style instructor. That may or may not be to your liking. He also really mixes up the classes - sometimes they're sweaty, sometimes less so, but I've always walked out of there in a better mood and much quieter. Einat (HEATED classes): I (yay) get to go to a lot of Einat's Friday or Monday classes in Brookline, and she is amazing at mixing alignment instruction with a tough workout class. She also gives amazing assists! Jo F.: Ah, I really need to go to more of Jo's classes. She is a perfect slow-vinyasa-flow instructor. I personally die in them, because I'm itching to amp it up, but that is more reflective of my need to constantly move, not a statement regarding Jo's teaching (again, she is a top-notch instructor). Whenever I need a dose of "take it down a notch," I go to Jo's class. For those of you who like it slower, she is a great choice. Kate: She does a rock-solid flow class and throws in a lot of interesting poses (dancer, dolphin, etc) to keep you on your toes. I haven't been to as many of Kate's classes as my schedule doesn't work well with hers, but she is a lovely person and instructor. She also teaches a relax and renew class on Sunday nights that I'm dying to get to - I hear those are quite popular so that could be a good refreshing class to take at the beginning of the week! There are, of course, many more instructors on the docket here at Brookline who are stellar. There's no way my schedule allows me to get to many of the classes here, but I've been so happy with the classes & community that I wanted to return the favor with this long writeup. I love everything about DUY and feel so incredibly lucky to be able to practice there on a regular basis. It's basically my hOMe away from home. The staff is conscientious and welcoming, the space is beautiful and meticulously maintained. Seriously, I don't know how they manage it at such a busy studio, but everything is always organized and super clean. They have some amazing teachers on staff. I particularly love Natasha R, Kate H, and Angelina H-D for vinyasa, Peter C for slow flow, and Ebba L for pilates. They're all kind and approachable, eager to help with an adjustment during class or to answer questions after class. I also love that people of all ages, colors, shapes, and sizes can be found in most classes. I was initially concerned that my over 35, had-3-babies self would be out of place, but I couldn't have been more wrong. It's a happy place for anyone and everyone. Check it out! read more

I have been going to Down Under Yoga studio since August and I have had an unlimited membership since. I stumbled into my first heated class with Masaaki after finding out I had a stress fracture in my tibia. Since I wasn't able to run for 4 months, and hated any other form of exercise, I was looking for something intense, but supportive and therapeutic. I found that here. While injured I went to Down Under every day I could and now that I am running again I still try to go three times a week. I have been to the Cambridge and Brookline studios and both are wonderful. Very calm, relaxed, and welcoming atmosphere. I regularly go to 6am heated flow classes with Claire and Amanda, but pop into Masaaki's and Gregor's classes whenever I can. Kristina, Will, Danielle, and Louie have subbed from time to time and I love the way they mix it up. All the teachers at Down Under are amazing and bring their own unique flair to the classes. When I was not running, I was obsessed with Irina's Sunday 90 minute classes because they were so challenging and fun! She was a great teacher and brought humor into the practice which I greatly appreciated. I only didn't particularly enjoy one teacher (who's name I forget) but I haven't seen her on the schedule in some time. When my 30 day for $30 trial period ended, I attended a few classes at Coolidge Corner Yoga to try and take advantage of their newcomer offer and instantly came back to Down Under because of how fond I was of the teachers and studio atmosphere. Nothing compares. The heated flow classes at Down Under are MUCH hotter and less crowded. I also feel like Down Under Yoga is less "trendy" than other studios and is more committed to offering a deeper practice that goes beyond the physical. I appreciate the diversity in age and ability of the yogis in my classes as well. There definitely is a community aspect here which is awesome. The showers are kept clean, and the lockers are very convenient. Sometimes you have to wait a while for a shower because there is only 3. I don't mind, but some people get annoyed. One lady who works here is especially rude. She yells at people for taking too long in the showers when it is clear everyone is trying to be as fast as possible. Not very "yogi" of her. I think she got fired because I haven't seen her in a few weeks. My only "complaint" is that I wish there was a way people who come regularly could store mats at the studio, or not have to pay 3 dollars to rent a heated flow mat every time. I carry my yoga mat and towel 2 miles every morning walking to the studio from my apartment, on the T to work in down town Boston, and back every day and it really hurts my back! I feel like this counteracts all the work I just did in class. Other than that, I love this studio and plan to continue my practice here for as long as I am living in Boston. I only practiced here for a week when I was in Boston visiting family and I'm so lucky I stumbled upon such a great studio! I was staying near Fenway and the studio was just a quick 10min walk. I took flow and iyengar classes and the instructors were top notch. Being from New York City which is over saturated with yoga, it was a breathe of fresh air to practice here. No tricks or trends. Just really good quality yoga. The studio is clean fully stocked with mats and props, no charge for mat rental. And for real iyengar rope wall! This studio made me wish I lived in Boston...they also offer heated classes as well as Mysore. I don't practice those types so I didn't get to check out the classes. Down Under Yoga has been my go-to hot yoga school for almost two years now. The front desk folks and instructors are all nice, welcoming, and knowledgeable. I started in August of 2015 when they had two locations in Brookline and in Newton. They are still adjusting to the merging of another hot yoga studio, which also two studios in Brookline and in Cambridge. Instead of keeping it at 4 studios they decided to have 3, which may explain the overflow with some of the Brookline classes. My recommendation: try the Cambridge or Newton locations, or go at 'off' hours (mid-morning/ afternoon). Many of the instructors teach at more than one location or time, and many seem to know what they're doing and can be very helpful. I particularly enjoy the Baptiste or hot yoga classes, but also enjoy the Flow or Slow Flow classes every once in a while which are great for building a foundation, if you're new, or as a refresher. read more

I have had the best flow yoga practice in Down Under Yoga. I tried Iyengar (was interesting but was not I was looking for) once and mostly went there for flow and heated flow (90 degrees). For heated yoga, the ventilation is very important. I barely got the smell of others' sweat in the classes. The studios were always adequately heated and were refreshed after each class. There are two showers and two bathrooms, and one water foundation. The entire place was spotless clean at all times. DIfferent than other studios, you can use yoga mats for free. I tried 30$ pass for 30 days, and will come back there although I am moving to Cambridge in a few weeks. read more

I love Down Under Yoga! I've been going to classes here regularly for a few months, and I also attended a bunch of classes when they first opened. I'm new to yoga, and I have really enjoyed learning from the teachers at DUY! The new member special ($30 for 30 days) is great, and the student rates are excellent, too (comparable to what you would pay to take classes at university gyms, but for what is, in my opinion, a much better experience). The staff is very knowledgeable and willing to help with billing questions, too. Overall, the studio is clean and relaxing; the one downside is that the welcoming area is definitely too small. I love the studio's philosophy of not selling merchandise or gear; I've never felt pressured to buy any expensive equipment or fancy yoga clothes, either by teachers or by other students. The classes I attend regularly are Tamara's Flow Foundations class (great for beginners and practicing alignment, plus Tamara is awesome!), Kate's Flow class (challenging with lots of fun sequencing, and usually great music, too), and Danielle's Cardio Core class (tough but SO much fun-- Danielle's energy is contagious). I really enjoy all three, and the class sizes are small enough that everyone gets individual attention. All of the teachers with whom I've taken classes are great at suggesting modifications for all different skill levels, and I feel like I've learned a lot in the few months I've been taking classes there! The school would be fine if they didn't keep a few teachers who make the school look bad in spite of complaints. It's a mixed bag. One teacher on Monday and Wednesday mornings was especially condescending. And that's so not yoga like. One teacher shines bright, but she teaches only one class a week and not even every week in spite of how popular this class is. I started yoga about two years ago as an attempt to find exercise I would actually maintain. Down Under Yoga just happened to be close to home. I have learned a lot in several years, but mostly I have learned how unusual and awesome Down Under Yoga is compared to many studios. The teachers are incredible. While the studio focuses on flow and Iengar styles, I mostly do flow. Every teacher brings some new dimension. Angelina is a brilliant teacher, really the one who taught me, always helping me find my edge and push in a way that's right for me. Justine is delightful, playful and always has something new. Jo is just calm and serene and appreciative. Kate is energetic and enthusiastic. Gale is rigorous and steady. Tom is also brilliant, and funny, and works us hard and well. My daughter loves Christyn's teen classes. There is no doubt that every one of these instructors is capable, extensively knowledgable, trained on multiple dimensions, and truly understands yoga as a practice, not just as fancy aerobics or today's latest trendy thing to do. DUY. Offers teacher training; yoga teachers come to their classes. And on teacher (a sub) stopped class for a moment one day and said "Patricia Walden just walked by. You don't see that every day." (Those of us who practice there actually kind of do :-) Notably I now understand that the reason I do yoga has little to do with being fit -- I am neither particularly religious or spiritual but find yoga incredibly calming and makes me better at what I do. Oh, and I am in shape, too. I have tried several other studios, and also talk to many people who find DUY after trying others. The level of professionalism I see at DUY is unmatched. The teachers are smart and savvy, understanding not just the words we say, but those we don't, and making sure we're all safe. I have almost never witnessed a teacher "dialing it in". The studio doesn't sell gear, or focus on anything other than yoga ... Not just a fitness facility adding to their bottom line. It's a great way to try all the different teachers that are available through the studio. I liked the clean space, easy parking, and variety of classes.
