Great post-partum exercise sessions (with my 2-month-old baby)!…read more After two kids, I'm out-of-shape, overweight, and have abs of jello -- so I arranged 6 private sessions with Rachel, where I bring my baby. The first session, per my request, she helped build me a core-strengthening routine that I can do on my own when I have a few minutes (without any special equipment). I just finished my 2nd lesson -- using the "reformer" pilates machine -- to do more specific exercises, and it felt great. I really like Rachel's hands-on approach. She physically lays-on hands to guide me through an exercise; to show how I'm using more/different muscles than I should be; and to physically hold one part of my body still so I can work specifically on another part. This is terrific for me since I don't have great body awareness -- and in large yoga classes I never know if I'm doing things correctly. I've heard Rachel's also good with more advanced folks & dancers, but I can only speak to her abilities with novices like me. How did it work with the baby? Today, my 2mo old needed to nurse right on arrival. While I fed him, Rachel used her Alexander Technique training to work with my posture, and by placing her hands on my head, neck, shoulders and back (while I was nursing), she was able to improve my posture to a more lengthened, upright, and comfortable position -- without any conscious effort on my part. Next, while I changed his diaper, Rachel pointed out how the disorganized and flexible movements of an infant differ from adult's organized but more limited motion -- so I didn't even feel that this was wasted time. Then, my babe watched us for a while, but when he wanted attention, Rachel held and bounced him while I continued with my exercises. When she needed to demonstrate something, we would pass the babe back and forth -- worked great. How does this compare to a "mama and baby yoga" class? I like those too, but didn't feel like I was getting the needed attention to properly strengthen my core muscles & pelvic floor. I think of these private lessons as an investment.

The program was scheduled to run from 09/09/2024 to 12/12/2024, four times a week for two hours each session. However, the experience has been incredibly frustrating. Nowhere on their website or in the receipt was it mentioned that parents are required to stay during the whole program (two hour each day, four days/week). We only found out after the program had already started through an email, and my son was even denied entry to his class until I managed to arrive by taxi! It turns out this requirement is buried in a 33-page handbook that wasn't given to us during checkout or mentioned clearly beforehand. To make matters worse, I teach in the evenings and simply can't meet this last-minute obligation. I reached out to the business to ask for either a solution or a refund for the remainder of the program, but I've received zero response. While my child enjoys the actual swimming program, I am extremely disappointed with how this business is handling things. A little transparency and better communication would go a long way.

I've been coming here since middle school and it still remains as one of my absolute favorite places. Look at these pictures! It's so well-kept there's never any trash. There is one small stretch of geese droppings but the path is so wide you can easily maneuver your way around them. :) It's located right in between Boston College's campus and Cleveland Circle so there's always some action and people around (but is never too overwhelmingly crowded). A happy medium of crowded and empty for sure. At one point you're overlooking Cassidy Playground that usually has something going on-- be it softball games or grass volleyball games for example. It definitely gives you some entertainment to look at while you walk! The views are everything. It's a 1.55 mile loop and there's benches along the way that people use for all kinds of reasons (to read a book, take a phone call, chat with a friend, stretch, soak up the sun and look out at the water, etc.). I love coming here around sunset and seeing the sky change and light up on the whole reservoir. Magical. Hands down one of my favorite places to be!

The second time, we finally conquered the rotaries but pulled into the parking lot right by the park to find resident only signs plastered everywhere. Seriously? No non-resident access even for one day out of the week? So here's a tip. On my third try, I just parked in the nearby Whole Foods lot and walked over. It was about five minutes with a sidewalk but I wasn't a fan of having to cross a super busy road to get into the park. Better than nothing, I guess. I've also heard there's street parking on the south end of the pond but you might need to do some circling.

What motivated me was the large hunks of New England Puddingstone perfect for beginner to intermediate climbers and solid bouldering. I won't get into specific climbs, but the Boston Rocks book by the MIT Outing Club is a great reference. A practical tip though: many of the rocks are shaded by enormous hemlocks, and are often times a bit slick, so be sure to bring chalk. I'd also get there early, especially on the weekends, cuz it fills up fast and as there are no bolts to anchor from and a limited number of trees up top. You might want to play musical ropes with your climber cohorts. Great option for a quick excursion as it's accessible by the Green line (D) to Chestnut Hill.

It wasn't until I was diagnosed with breast cancer and needed a different kind of workout and a coach to help me through that I decided to try Endurance. I am soooo glad that I tried! First of all, Julie is amazing. She is highly educated in anatomy and physiology as it pertains to movement and she is an excellent communicator. Being new to Pilates, she really helped me do the movements correctly which is key in Pilates. It's easy to "cheat" but cheating doesn't get you results. Secondly, I no longer feel intimidated by the reformer. Haha. Julie made sure that I felt welcomed and comfortable from the start. Even when I was going through chemotherapy and radiation, bald, overweight, edematous, and exhausted, she made me feel welcomed. She made me feel cared-for. She tailored my workout by how I was feeling and addressed issues right on the spot, like if I noted pain in one area or another. There were so many changes going on in my body that I couldn't keep up with and Julie helped me recognize them and helped me come up with solutions. For example, she recognized certain areas of my body that needed more stretching which probably became tight from spending so much time on the couch after chemo. Now that I have finished chemo and radiation, we are working on building back up my core strength. So grateful she is my coach to encourage me through an ab work out! I have not taken a class with any of the other instructors but I understand they are highly qualified and amazing too. And from watching the end of a class, here and there, waiting for my session to begin, they are amazing! To sum it up: Don't hesitate to try! I am so glad that I did.

My instructor, Sam, kicks my ass every class without me even knowing. I don't really sweat during class but then my whole body is sore the next day (sorcery!). I had a private session first and then signed up for a pack of 10 TWS classes. The only thing I wished they had was a better scheduling system where I can go in to see which classes I've attended/missed. They charge for missed TWS classes, which is fine and I understand why they do that. But it'll help hold both parties accountable (myself and Boston Pilates) if I can visually see which classes I've missed and need to make up. There's no formal checkin process so I'll have to rely on memory or their words that I attended (or missed) a class. This is in NO way saying that I don't trust them, just that I think the scheduling system can be improved. An option to reload a pack of TWS classes and pay online would be helpful too!

It is a powerful community space to Be In Union with yourself & others in the community who we share more in common with than we realize. I always just "did yoga". After these 3 months I now understand what it means to have a practice. I highly recommend taking the ride to this sacred, energetic space to take classes. Know that you can show up as your are, even if you simply made it on the mat & lay there for yourself. The Yoga Teacher training was truly life changing for me. My intention was never to be a teacher, I simply wanted to get back in touch with & heal my body. I am grateful that I am now part of this community I never knew I really had, yet have been part of for 15 years. I've gotten bad migraines after two of the hot classes here, both of which I found pretty boot-camp-y and un-yogic. One of them, the instructor was yelling about " Making your legs the same length " and " uneven limbs " the whole time. Well, I have many close to me with physical deformities/abnormalities--myself included--and that just completely took me out of it. I've had more empathetic experiences at Bikram inspired Hot 26. If you're very low body fat and love to take the most intense Power Flow classes on offer, this might be a good place for you. I have been practicing for six years and I'm in decent shape generally and on the intermediate end in most classes--but I was on the floor and ended up with bad migraines here. The Iyengar class was the opposite, very slow and jerky with extremely detailed cueing. Not a workout at all, but nice if you like Iyengar (I found here that I don't really).

She has introduced me to pilates with machines and like I always feel after resuming regular classes, my posture is better and my back and neck tension from constant computer work has resolved. She also incorporates light weights to ensure I am getting a full body workout. The great part of this studio is you can get 1 on 1 classes for the price of large group classes. The disadvantage is it is small and personal, and I have to confirm for each class I will attend. The program was scheduled to run from 09/09/2024 to 12/12/2024, four times a week for two hours each session. However, the experience has been incredibly frustrating. Nowhere on their website or in the receipt was it mentioned that parents are required to stay during the whole program (two hour each day, four days/week). We only found out after the program had already started through an email, and my son was even denied entry to his class until I managed to arrive by taxi! It turns out this requirement is buried in a 33-page handbook that wasn't given to us during checkout or mentioned clearly beforehand. To make matters worse, I teach in the evenings and simply can't meet this last-minute obligation. I reached out to the business to ask for either a solution or a refund for the remainder of the program, but I've received zero response. While my child enjoys the actual swimming program, I am extremely disappointed with how this business is handling things. A little transparency and better communication would go a long way.
