We have been working with Oscar Lopez for the last year or two. Our complex is small, only 20 units. Still Oscar's team doesn't seem to be able to handle the work. Over the summer he has almost completely killed our grass. He misdianosed a leak and had his guys waste time taping up holes in a soaker hose with electrical tape. (The whole point of a soaker hose is to have small holes. ) I have no knowledge of landscaping but figured out how to turn on the various sprinkler zones and found out it was a broken sprinkler head. His team sometimes doesn't show up or they leave early, but we still get billed. There are pampas bushes he promised to trim a month ago and they are still growing. How do you trust a company that can't even keep the grass alive? We are firing them and going to another company. This company has cost us thousands in dead plants. read more

They did a huge amount of money worth of work at my house, were quickly communicating during the job to ask for installments of my money, but after work was done and I asked over & over & over for a receipt, never got one. Got lots of texts promising, but got nothing but a crappy email with list of things done, but not a real, itemized receipt. Any real business would be capable of generating invoices. I see from other reviews this is a pattern. Never again will I work with such a business. read more

Paid Oscar $1500.00 to clean up my front and back yards and fix the sprinklers. Did an adequate, but far from great, job of weeding and cutting back some bushes. Did not fix the sprinklers at all. In fact, when I complained about how all the hose lines were now exposed and above ground (they were not visible before) he sent someone over to fix it. Instead of fixing it, they dug it all up and dug a bunch of holes where the heads are. Front yard looks like hell now. I have repeatedly asked for a detailed invoice of the work he was supposed to perform. He has failed to provide one. Now he has stopped answering my texts or calls. I have filed a complaint with the BBB so we will see what happens now. I do hope that Warren Bishop, the CEO of Down Under Services, realizes that Oscar is single handedly destroying the reputation of what was, at one time, a very reputable company. Don't ever use this guy!!! He'll just rip you off! read more

Started out as a decent relationship, good prices but then when my yard starting having issues, I went to Oscar to price out some items to remedy the issues. Not only did he try to over charge me twice for two different projects but then my yard almost died inadvertently because he would not come back over to turn on the sprinkler system that I spent $600 for him to fix.. NOT fixed by the way and my front yard is officially ruined. Not only did he rip me off but he then started to ignore my kind text requests.. While I was on vacation, they came once and then never spoke to me again but charged me for 2 visits to my home in which I have proof they did not come. Makes me wonder how many other times they've done this and I did not check. Highly NOT recommended as a company. read more

I've been a client now for a few years, and I've referred the company to others at least twice. They take care of my entire yard on a bi-weekly basis, cutting grass, trimming back bushes, doing all the things that people did naturally a hundred years ago and life in an office environment has made me suck at. I kill the plants I want to keep and feed the weeds. DUS keeps things alive and I can have backyard BBQs without cringing. We contact each other by email, they invoice me by email, there are records, and everything is very convenient, prompt, and fits well into my busy life. I've tried another service before and they didn't keep records of the billing, and apparently didn't realise that I did. So I appreciate good record-keeping. read more

Update: The owner did contact me, apologized for what when wrong, and offered to replace my rose bush and banana tree. So I upgraded from 2 stars to 3. Doesn't really mitigate what I experienced, but someone over there does care. - - - - - - - - - Note the response from the owner, basically says that my experience was not real, but I've got the $22 check that DUS gave me for the sprinkler heads that I had replaced, and it's very real. My banana tree and rose bush are very really dead. Note there was no offer to make it right, no apologies for a less than excellent experience, no acknowledgment that they could have been at least partially responsible for what didn't go right, and no assurance that they'd strive to do better in the future. So let that indicate what kind of customer service you should expect from DUS, especially if there's a problem. read more

LOVE THEM I had a ton of random projects and needed to get them done. Michael came over and gave me a really fair quote to get everything handled. 5 stumps removed 6 bushes cut out and stumps removed trimming and cutting back more 6 ft bushes. hand weeding of all dandelions and clovers. (it was grotesque how many I had) The crew was polite and they got the job done, I filled an area with rock and sand and put in planters. The crew helped me unload my truck so I didn't hurt myself and advised me how much I needed to buy. They finished as planned and I couldn't be happier. I am hiring them bi weekly to maintain my yard. I hired Mike to update my existing sprinkler system. He came out and gave me a fair realistic bid for the time frame and price. He completed the job for the same price and time as bid. He really worked hard and got the job done right, the first time! He is very knowledgeable about his profession. The job came out amazing. I have been using Down Under Services for years. When I moved to another home recently, I made sure they "moved" with me. Warren is the owner and he is very hands on with his customers. Although he does not do the physical work as much, does drop by inspections to make sure his "guys" are doing their best. I have used them for usual maintenance, and also for 3 large total landscape designs at my home. The price is beyond fair, I have to tell Warren to charge me extra when he goes beyond the scope of usual weekly maintenance. All people under Warrens employ are professional, honest, and kind. This could be preliminary, and I may actually be contacted. I talked with (name will not be used) about 2 weeks ago. They said that they would be in contact with me last week to set up a time to take a look at the irrigation install/repair job and provide an estimate. not one correspondence since that call. even to say they wouldn't be able to make it to the house. However, I was quickly notified that it would be $45 an hour for any work whatsoever. So at least I'm not out any increments of $45. Update: Great correspondence at this time. Good people. read more

We found Down Under on Angie's List and they had great reviews. We had good conversations with the foreman and it sounded like they had a solid plan for our .4 acre yard which we needed trimmed. However, when the crew came out, they brought 3 chain saws and a crew of 6 guys who chopped down a bunch of trees and broke our pool equipment in the process from fallen branches. They didn't "trim our trees" - they damaged our Queen palms and cut other trees down indiscriminately. I had to halt their work in the middle of the first day to avoid irreparable tree damage. We never received any apology or monetary reimbursement for the damage they caused. Very disappointing. read more

Second, Mike was on time for our appointment...win. Mike provided us with the information and feedback we needed about our job, even provided samples. Mike and his crew did a great job and we are very happy with the result. Finally, Mike stuck to his bid, even though he underestimated the amount of time the job would take. I work multiple jobs, and lawn care is very low on my priority list. I am also allergic to grass, so cutting it was presenting a large problem for me. I hired Down Under Services for removal of some overgrown palms and shrubbery. I thought the price for the service was fair, but not cheap. They worked very hard to dig up some nasty ficus roots, and they made quick work for removal of a few unwanted trees. During the course of their work, there was an accidental burial of a sprinkler head, and another sprinkler head was busted off. But I was keeping an eye on things, I mentioned the problem, and they fixed it without extra charge. Be careful with this company. We moved and have been trying for months to cancel service but they keep charging our credit card!!! Oscar is not answering our phone calls or responding to our messages. We used them for many years and have noticed that workmanship has dramatically gone down in the last year. I recently had down under services install a totally new irrigation system in my yard . Have to say , very impressed. From the start they were professional , and they were the only ones out of the companies that come out, that actually took a pressure reading . I dint know much about irrigation design but I do know you need to get at least some idea of what you ave to work with . They then drew a comprehensive plan of my system and I have that now, in case there are any problems . I also like the fact they are licensed contractors and have insurance . Overall just a great experience , so I have now decided to use them for my maintenance of my yard . Highly recommend . read more

I haven't worked with the whole crew yet, but Mike, the irrigation specialist they sent to help me was fabulous. He worked to install a very basic valve and drip line system for a few plant beds I had near my house. He was great at communicating when he'd show up, did a wonderful job on the irrigation, and even spent most of the first day actually fixing a solar pipe that had burst in my garage (which had caused flooding and my water to be shut off). He was a life saver and stayed until the problem was fixed before continuing with my drip line. He was incredibly affordable (imagine how nervous I got when I realized I'd have to pay to have my water main fixed!!) and even let me sit out with him both days learning and taking pictures of his work (so that I could learn how to do myself in the future). Aside from the good work, he's super personable, knows a lot about what he's doing, and gets the job done well. If the rest of the down under crew is as awesome as Mike, I don't think you can beat this team! read more

Down Under Services provides service to our family's rental property in San Diego. I have found that I can depend on them to be on schedule and provide the services they promised when we contracted with them. Most important to me is that the property is kept in a clean, safe and managed condition for our tenants. On occasion, when there is an additional task that needs to be done, Oscar and his crew have been very responsive. I used these guys for over 2 years. For the estimate, the owner (Warren) came out and explained everything to me and was very professional. I hired them to perform maintenance on my water-wise landscape (mostly succulents, cacti, and a small patch of grass lawn) every other week and things were great for a while. About a year and a half later, my low maintenance landscape had weeds all over and I started noticing that the crew was skipping service here and there based on the grass height on the lawn. When I contacted the company I received excuse after excuse from the lead crew member for my property. The excuses ranged from "schedule got too busy" to "our email server is down." However I was still getting charged regularly! This happened a few times and then I wrote directly to Warren only to have my email bounce back with a message saying he had retired and no longer runs the company. A few weeks later I got a different email from them that the lead crew member that was responsible for my property was no longer with the company (sounded like he got fired). I hadn't found a replacement landscaping company yet so I wrote back with some questions about the terms of my service and haven't heard back. This was a few weeks ago. Based on my personal experiences with lack of responsiveness and accountability I have decided to cut ties now that Warren is no longer running things. He was great but not the people that he has hired to run things. read more

The Review I would like to make re: Down Under Services is: Recently hired to do our annual (Spring) yard clean renovation / cleanup. Work intailed trimming/shaping of several frown Junipers and other ornamental trees, bushes and headges. Cutting back / trimming existing plant areas, removal of plants and planting replacements. Including planting new dwarf type (Citrus, etc.) large pots. A 2 man crew (professional, helpful, courteous) arrived on time. Quickly organized their efforts and proceeded to efficiently complete the work required. Surprisingly, faster than I thought possible. Their final cleanup of clippings / debris was meticulous. The final cost, in my opinion, was less than expected. Certainly impressed with the Down Under brand of service. Not a lot of that around. I will use again and would recommend them highly. read more
