Down under is down right delicious! And who doesn't love a restaurant with a fun entrance (in the gazebo, down the stairs). I had the fried tenderloin sandwich - larger than the bun as is necessary per Hoosier custom. It came with all the fixins for you to dress as you please. The house salad is fresh and the house dressing (a sweet Italian) takes it to the next level. I snuck a few fries from others at my table and they were fantastic too - hot and crispy. Service was quick and helpful! If I had one complaint it's that I don't know what's in most of the cocktails on the list. A banner blipped across my phone stating that the special at Down Under was the $10.99 fish fry. We decided to try Down Under for the first time. We ordered the fried fish platters, that came with French fries, Cole slaw and homemade tartar sauce. the tables around us were full and there were folks waiting for the next table. Love the location. Out of the way but in a great spot. Was a little too cold to sit outside but the deck looked awesome. Very good and prompt service. We started with the oysters which were just ok - they had clearly been opened earlier in the day as they weren't juicy at all - I'd pass. We had the fish and chips which were fantastic. We also had the shrimp platter (lunch) which was good - nice amount of blackening spices. Nice beer selection as well. Overall we will be back, just not for the oysters. read more

The absolute worst prime rib that I have ever been served! It was stone cold and had obviously been refired from leftovers, definitely not $58 Classic bait & switch, definitely NOT the same as the picture they use on their fb page. Which a quick google search proved it wasn't even their photo. The Server who was understandably embarrassed by the situation and knew our displeasure, did provide a 10% discount but they shouldn't have charged a dime since it only took 3 bites to make the conscious decision that it was inedible. Horrible. House dressing is a bottle of cheap Italian dressing mixed with powdered sugar, it looked like brown gravy on the salad, with a lovely gritty feeling on the tongue. Alfredo sauce needed a recipe to follow. Poured over precooked penne pasta that was made a day before and reheated. Grateful we didn't take the whole family there for dinner. $60. This place is so unique. It is under ground. You enter thru a gazebo! The food and service are phenomenal! We had the seafood stuffed mushrooms for an appetizer. If you like cream cheese they are amazing! My wife had the king prime rib and she said it was one of the best prime rib she has ever had. Very tender and little fat. I had the baby back full rack of ribs. Perfect blend of sweet, tangy and smoke. It fell of the bone. BBQ sauce on the side is the way to go so the rich zesty sauce doesn't over take the flavor of the meat. The garlic Parmesan waffle fries are totally delectable. I've eaten more than 100 meals here in the last 3 years so I reaaaallllly like it... My favorite dish is the Prime Rib Sandwich (try it blackened) followed by a regular cheeseburger, followed by pizza, followed by their salad, followed by blackened chicken sandwich, followed by the weekend specials (changes every weekend). Obviously it is worth visiting a few times. The house Walleye is really the hands down best dish they offer, but the price of $19 also sets it 33% higher than ever other entree, and twice as much (or greater) as the sandwiches. The rotating draft beer list is great, they keep Sierra Nevada seasonal selections at all times as well as the usual light American beers. Upland Wheat (Indiana brewery) and Red Hook brewery (Washington State). They have a loyalty program (ask for your card after dinner), they'll give you one punch every visit (only one punch per check) and after ten punches you receive a free entree. This place is very unique, great atmosphere! The food was okay, some interesting options. The wait staff was undesirable. We were at the restaurant for 2 hours because our service was so slow. We were into our second drinks before we got water brought to our table. Keeping in mind we got our first drinks ourselves from the bar. When our food final came, my husband had to search the restaurant for S&P himself. The couple we were with requested a fork to eat his fish. Luck for him he was very skilled at using his knife because his fish was all but gone before the fork arrived. Checking out, the waitress charged our bill to our credit card and then charged the couple we were with, meal to our CC. When we got up and tracked her down, she refunded our companions bill and the charged our meal again. Ugh! read more

Wow. I don't even know where to start. We arrived and upon entering the smell of cigarettes wafted to the entrance. I could feel the second hand smoke and wrinkles seeping through my very being. Good bye to my 30s. I ordered the Bloody Mary, which was very good with house made pepper infused vodka. However, while enjoying my beverage and out of town company, I was approached by the bartender and owner at the same time, to watch my mouth because there were ladies in there. I am a woman, amongst other grown women, and was told to "watch my mouth". This is a basement bar, where patrons were openly smoking cigarettes in a banned state. Also, no children were present due to it being a bar in Indiana. All women should have free speech and be entitled to their own language of choice while quietly conversing with friends. We are formerly from the area and will drive quite a ways to come back and visit this quirky restaurant which is situated in downtown Syracuse. The entry is above ground, but the restaurant is down underground via a stairwell. Atmosphere is like a pub. Pretty white lights and lots of neon. Food is excellent! They serve great steaks and the best fish for miles around. On our last visit, they had a steak bruschetta appetizer special that was AMAZING. The salad is terrific, lots of veggies and topped with an Italian dressing that has 14 ingredients! We love Down Under. A really great restaurant for a small town. It's one of our favorites of all and we are full time RVers who are eating our way across America. Don't miss this gem of a restaurant. read more

Great pizza. Prices are fair and the staff knows what customer service is too. I recommend the pizza or prime rib. In the past, this place has smelled like smoke at times but as more Americans are quitting or switching to alternatives this isn't an issue anymore unless it's later in the evening past way past dinner time. This place is located in the center of Syracuse. On the west corner of Main and Huntington, you will find a gazebo-like entrance, followed by a spiral staircase. You enter into the family section and there is also a bar area. Quiet, dim lit, and dark. It's a relaxing place to enjoy dinner. Staff was friendly and attentive. The food was reasonably priced. The amount of food I got was fair for the price. They had the food out quickly! The people running the Down Under know food!The service was also very good. It was clear the waitstaff is experienced and cares about their patrons. The Big One burger lived up to its name. It was very tall and had a ton of ingredients stuffed around the 1 lb of beef patties. It's a lot to eat, and worth every bite. We also ordered the steak special last night, which was a ribeye steak on a tomato chutney topped with thin, crisp onion rings. The layers of texture and flavor in this dish were perfect, and reminded me of high end restaurants we've loved. The chutney was sweet, but had an acidic flavor that was great with both the onion rings and steak. The salad with the house dressing was also very good. The food and the service was fantastic. We ordered steaks. We ordered them medium rare and they came as we ordered them. Our waitress (I can't remember her name) was quick and friendly. Very helpful with the menu and drinks. I have only one complaint and it was the smoking. I don't mind people smoking but not when I'm eating. Todd works hard to maintain a decent selection of beer on tap that complements his bottled selection. I really try to stay up on new craft beer introduction, but I found Beer Camp Hoppy Lager from Sierra Nevada first at The Down Under! Great weekly specials accent a find menu selection. When you order their pizza, you can taste each ingredient! Todd says this is because their ingredients are always fresh! My wife's favorite is garlic mashed potatoes. Many of my friends and family love their waffle fries. I like their steaks and breaded fish special. The best part of The Down Under experience is the kind disposition and friendly welcoming manner of the owners and wait staff. I have been pleasantly impressed by everyone there on every visit. Have gotten only to-go food orders 4 or 5 times. Unfortunately this establishment does not provide a smoke free dining experience. Thin crust pizza is average, chunks of sausage not to my liking , extra cheese is needed. Wings are great. Not too saucy but meaty. Have tried several sandwiches with waffle fries or seasoned fries,very tasty. Service at the bar is friendly and helpful. Beer served in a frosted pint glass, nice. The service was great but the food was awful. Sampled everything that was ordered and it was sub par across the board. Half of it was deep fried from frozen. My fiance and I recently went to Down Under for the second time. Were from Niles, MI and visited for the first time last summer after someone working at our hotel recommended it for their prime rib. It was so good, we had to come back for our anniversary for more of the best prime rib we have ever had. The service there is also wonderful. The waitress even remembered us! The food is consistently great, the prices are reasonable, and the staff is friendly. The owners are there occasionally, and they're quite enjoyable. It feels inexplicably homey there, probably because it's literally underground. They have several TVs so you can catch the game as well. My only two complaints are that the Stevie Ray Vaughan gets played on heavy rotation and the prime rib is hit-or-miss. read more
