Down South Seafood is, hands down, the best restaurant in the Milledgeville/Sparta area.

There was a wait when we arrived, so he added our name to the list on the board and we chose to enjoy the outside sitting area while we waited. I sipped on a sangria while hubby ordered a pomegranate martini. My sangria did not lack in the alcohol department, but it was a little weak in the flavor department. Hubby's pomegranate martini was a better choice...a subtle sweetness with a nice alcohol content. Other customers commented about how strong their cosmos were. A few had to ask for more cranberry juice to make them palatable. Conversations with other guests and the bartender for the outside bar prompted numerous appetizer and entree recommendations once they learned we were visiting for the first time. From bbq shrimp and Philly Cheesesteak Spring Rolls appetizers to fish-n-chips, fried shrimp, and chicken tenders entrées to peanut butter pie, strawberry shortcake, and bread pudding desserts, everyone shared so many options that were "sooo good". Hubby and I ordered the bbq shrimp appetizer. It did not disappoint. Now this wasn't the same type of bbq that would be on ribs or chicken from the grill. This was a scrumptious butter, worcestershire, spicy sauce that was worthy of being licked off of our fingers and sopped up with the delicious crusty exterior, pillowy soft interior bread that was served with it. Definitely 10/10 would recommend. For our entrées, we both selected the option recommended to us by our fantastic waiter, Cody...fish and chips with fried shrimp. We both opted to swap the chips (fries) out for the parmesan cheese grits as recommended by a guest in one of those previous conversations. Again, all recommendations were fabulous! The fish and shrimp were seasoned and fried perfectly with a crispy but not over battered exterior. It was served with cocktail and tartar sauces and a coleslaw that was unique in that it had an onion flavor. It was edible, but it wasn't my favorite. I would likely swap it out with another side next time...and based on tonight's experience, there will definitely be a next time. The only down side was that hubby and I ordered bread pudding desserts to go. When we opened them later, they were drastically different. One was lighter in color and was delicious while the other was much darker and seemed like it may have been overcooked. The flavors differed between the two as well. After such a great meal and experience, it was a bit disappointing to have it all end this way. If possible, I would have taken off half a star because everything and everyone else was great.

Tbh, the name of the place, doesn't match the ambience of the place, which reminded me of a made over Sports Bar (all that was missing, were the multiple big screen TVs). However, the food is delicious! And, the service is excellent! So, who cares that the name doesn't the environment? For an appetizer, we split an order of Gator Bites, with Remoulade Sauce (best I've ever tasted). We each had something different; Kristen had Fried Fish Platter, with Asparagus, and Cheese Grits. Chris had a Shrimp and Grits Bowl. And, I had my usual birthday (which was yesterday, and we had a May B'day Party (6 of us have/had a birthday) dinner, Fillet Mignon and Lobster, with a Baked Potato. While the service was great, and the food very good, I can't give them 5 Stars, as I ordered the fillet Medium Rare, and they cooked it, Well Done. :-( Now, I did tell our server about it. But, because I was so hungry, and because it was still pretty tender, I didn't return it. Nor, did they give me a discount. But, I'll definitely order from them, or come here again.

The fish and shrimp were both cooked perfectly. Though our waiter was technically a bartender and was helping out on the floor since they were shorthanded, he was spot on with his service and the accuracy of our order. Salad, with Blue Cheese Dressing: Though it was weird looking (croutons in on corner, shredded cheese in a straight line, and diced tomatoes in the other corner), the greens were fresh and crisp. And, the cheese and tomato tasted fresh, too. The Blue Cheese Dressing was fantastic! I haven't tasted such good dressing in years. 5 Stars Hot Wings: Whoa! I don't think I've ever seen such small drumettes. And, many of the wings were in a near L shape, vs being tucked together. While tasty, unfortunately, I found the drumettes to be quite dry, and a bit tough. As was the wing tips. But, the wing bases were what I'm use to. 3 Stars Cajun Shrimp Pasta: Oh, my word! Talk about a scrumptiouselious dish! While the pasta did stick a little (could be due to delivery), this was fantastic! The Cajun spice was just hot enough to let you know it. But, not so much where it blew the top of your head off. Or, having to guzzle water to put the fire out. 5 Stars And, between the wings, salad and entree, I got enough for 2 dinners, and a lunch. 8-) So, despite the wings being a let down, I'm very pleased with this place. And, for sure, I'll order from them again.
