I hired this company to do a survey of two rectangular lots in Portland's West End (they are…read morecontiguous and combined area less than an acre). They gave me an estimate of $6,000-$6,500, which was twice as high as other estimates I received and did not include the cost of setting markers ($400/each). On the phone they convinced me that the price reflected the quality of their work and that they had the experience necessary to properly survey these two lots which appeared to me to have gone unmarked for over 100 years. I let them know that another neighbor had recently done a survey and suggested that some encroachment may be occurring on one of my lots. They said they were conservative with their estimate and that I should plan on $6,500 plus markers but it could be less. I decided to hire them. I signed the contract and then over 5 months went by (estimated completion time was 80 days). One day I received a bill for $10,000 ($8,000 for survey research and admin, $2,000 for markers). When I reached out for an explanation Jim said it was an especially challenging job because of the age of the lots and the encroachment issues. I reminded him that he was fully aware of both issues when he gave me an estimate yet his company did not reach out to me when they knew the work was going way over ($1,200 more than the worst case scenario laid out in the estimate). He was unapologetic. The contract states that the estimates are estimates, and they can charge more without notifying you or justifying the cost. They don't set any pins until you pay. If you don't pay you get a lien on your house. I would not recommend the company to others due to the overall cost, the lack of communication about cost overruns, and the length of time to accomplish the work (6 months total elapsed between contract signed and pins set).

Also, I had ordered a police detail to prevent my neighbor who has been bullying me for four years from bothering the survey crew. Jimmy knew about the problem with the neighbor and the police detail. So what does jimmy do? They send a letter to my nasty neighbor asking for help locating the pins. Mind you my other neighbor did NOT get a letter requesting help finding a pin on her side of the property. After surveyworks inc disregarded my police detail and sent a letter to My neighbo, I canceled the survey. They sent me an email canceling the survey. Though they never stepped foot on my property, they are now billing me almost $600 dollars for ? They did nothing Stay away from surveyworks inc!

We had a great experience working with NEL/Gene for our initial site survey on two small parcels…read more The provided work was terrific and delivered on time and Gene was a pleasure to work with. Unfortunately we encountered some problems thereafter as once we started construction the city required the surveyor to return to the site and pin the foundations. Because we have never done construction before, we were not aware of this requirement, which was unfortunate. However, in speaking with many other surveyors, we understand return visits such as this to be considered typical in this type of work as most surveyors do not want to pin foundations based on someone else's work. Unfortunately, the point at which we needed NEL to return, he was busy with other projects and refused to fit us in to return to do the small amount of follow up work. This forced us to really scramble to find another surveyor to come and not only do the work required, but to go back and verify all of Gene's original work. This resulted in a work stoppage of over a month and significant expense. We really appreciated NEL's survey original site survey work, which was excellent, but would just caution future clients that NEL is a "one man show" so careful planning is required if you will need additional help later in the construction project as NEL may or may not be available at that point. In our case, it would have been far more economical to go with a larger survey organization that has more substantial resources available in the case of any follow up work required. This caused us significant stress and we were very fortunate that we found one of the larger firms to help us out of the pickle we found ourselves.

They always have the best properties, reasonable prices, their properties have always been exactly as described and extra clean and well appointed. Carol and Ed send out emails starting in January that tell which properties are available, if I want to plan ahead. They also keep sending them out all summer long, so I can always stay updated, if I want to get away spontaneously! Which I often do! And the great thing is that when I do want to get away spontaneously, they have properties available! There's lots of great real estate agents in OOB, but for me, I'll pretty much only use Carol and Ed! Thank you both for helping us find a wonderful cottage (Fisher cottage) this summer. We had a wonderful time!
