Dont use this guy! you'll be sorry! If it's one easy job and he needs $$ that week, it should be…read morefine. At first- indispensable, charming and very reasonable prices, great quality in his work. He needed a reference for Angie's List at the time. However I used him for a couple of years for chimney work and handyman services. All was well. Then he was no longer dependable. I sent him a text and he was to stop by before 10 or after 1. of course, he stopped by during that time and left his business card. He purposely came by when he knew I would be gone. Then, I had a few odds and ends to be done plus power washing and he quoted me $300 for everything to be done in 2 Visits. He came and power washed the house and deck, stuck a bill in my screen for $300, so I put a check in the screen for him. He took the check and I thought would let me know when he was done to schedule fixing of the grout/caulking among other things. Nope, he got into his truck to leave .I realized then the receipt was for power washing only, and there must be a mistake. I went out and said "you quoted me $300 for all of the small things and you only did the power washing"! He said "no, it's $300 for today! Previously he only charged me $150 for this. He was very angry, called me an ignorant c***, stupid b****. I lost it and said some things I shouldn't have . I never did anything about it for fear of retaliation and damage to my house. I believe he simply didn't "feel like" doing the rest of the work, but he wanted the money. I was so upset/angry, no one ever treated me that way before, I was really shook up. We exchanged some nasty emails but then i decided I'd rather not get him angry. I then started reading reviews and found that he went by Mr. Chimney, Shepherd and Sons and Randy Shepherd But always kept the same phone number. He would give people quotes, do part of the work and leave with the money. After ripping off a few people and not showing up to others, he would lay low for awhile, then start up again. This was a few years ago and now I'm safely in another state.

Papi & Romano Builders

It's been over a year and a half now since we completed an extensive from-the-studs-out renovation…read moreof a 1907 building with Papi and Romano, and it just keeps getting better with age :-) We bought a magnificent apartment on the West End of Portland in December 2018 while living in California. To say that we started from the ground up is an understatement. Having chosen to work with Rick Romano and his crew from 3000 miles away, there are no words for the experience that we had and the product that they turned out. Yes, it took longer and cost more than we had anticipated, but as expected there were some nearly insurmountable challenges that came up along the way. The work provided by Rick and his crew; the extraordinary attention to detail in every single way can never be understated. They found ways to reuse every single original door and piece of hardware, while creating an entirely new space where those original doors became pocket doors, the transom windows/lights were reused in every place possible, original 1907 brick was exposed with doors realigned in the intention of John Calvin Stevens, the architect on our beautiful building, and every piece of cabinetry was created to perfection. As a design build firm, Rick and we worked out reconfiguring some of the original space and solved some issues of sound attenuation. For that we requested an outside opinion from our nephew, also an architect, who provided new and creative ideas. Rick was open to suggestions and ideas that were not his own, Chose to learn alternative ways of handling possible issues, and was gracious to a fault. He is a joy to work with (if not always the easiest guy to get a hold of :-) and every one of his subcontractors is top tier. I realize that it's been too long and that we haven't written him the review that he deserved, but it's nice to have lived in this beautiful space for some time now, and to appreciate him more every day. We cannot recommend Papi and Romano highly enough.

I had the pleasure of working with Anthony and Adam on a newly constructed home. The biggest challenge for me was doing it from across the country. I never got to see the home or walk through it between the time I saw the empty lot and 5 months later when it was finished. Here's my review of Brush and Hammer. GENERAL CONTACT/ CUSTOMER SERVICE Anthony was and continues (12 months later) to always answer my phone calls and respond to my text messages promptly. I'm so impressed with his professionalism and responsiveness. CONTRACT NEGOTIATION Anthony was more than fair during the contract negotiation phase. He was willing to strike/edit 3 of his contract terms that made me uncomfortable. He also quickly updated his contract to meet the current standard Maine home construction contractual terms established by the State government. I really appreciated how detailed the construction contract was written. It spelled out everything that would be included/excluded, budgets, and expectations of me as a customer/client. We found the budgeting for every area to be spot on with our expectations. We were able to reach a compromise on a number of upgrades we did to our home that was more than fair. Perhaps the biggest testament to how great this process went was that there was no need to involve lawyers. The contract was written in straightforward language that was easy to understand and edit. DESIGN We love Anthony's sense of style and taste. He was a huge help in guiding us through the many selections we, as buyers, have to make throughout the build process. We had to select siding, countertops, lighting fixtures, finishing, hardware, door styles, cabinetry design, bathroom vanities, bathroom tile, paint colors for walls and cabinets, etc. Anthony would always provide us with 3-6 great choices, but he also allowed us to move outside those choices as well. He gave honest and polite feedback if he thought we were going in a direction that maybe wasn't good. He also pointed out how changes to one selection impact the other choices in terms of what would or would not work well together. BUILD The build phase was impressive. Even though we were not on site, Anthony texted us pictures on at least a weekly basis and at times, daily. I noticed a few things that I wanted changed such as the placement of windows, or moving some of the framing around for the fireplace framing and he was able to accommodate those changes quickly. He also put in a bathtub that did not match our taste. I think he swapped it out within 48 hours of us giving him feedback. Most importantly, since we were across the country, the fact that he sent us pictures allowed us to assess whether the build was happening as we wanted it. The transparency was amazing. When we told our friends about what our builder was doing, they were shocked at how closely Anthony involved us throughout all stages of the build. I would say Brush and Hammer has a commitment to customer satisfaction that goes well above and beyond the average builder. I would also say Anthony's attentiveness to little details such as placement of outlets, light switches, HVAC vents, etc. was really very thoughtful. FOLLOW-UP/PUNCH LIST Perhaps the most impressive part of working with Brush and Hammer builders has been (i) how few/little issues we've had with a new home which speaks to their quality, and (ii) how quickly they've responded to the requests to address the minor issues that we've had. And they continue to do it 12 months AFTER we closed on the home. New homes are incredibly complex from the structure settling to the water, HVAC, and electrical systems. Anthony has quickly addressed any minor issues we've had with any those systems. Typically, I would say we had our issues resolved in 4-7 calendar days. If it was something like heat (due to a defective component from the furnace manufacturer) in winter, then we had our issue resolved in less than 24 hours. Where most builders fall short and disappear after closing, Brush and Hammer steps up their game and ensures their customers are happy. Anthony is a savvy businessman with a keen sense of marketing. He thoughtfully protects their reputation and brand by ensuring their customers are happy with their homes and with them as builders. FINAL THOUGHTS I highly recommend them and hope to work with them again at some point in the future for either my parents or in the distant future for myself.
