I brought two books to the counter today and took a moment to look in my bag for my book discount bookmark for him to stamp. I carefully put my laptop, wallet, glasses, and clean paper wrapper containing the cafe's fresh veggie sandwich half, all on the broad counter for a moment, in the manner of Lucille Ball. I'm old enough that she was my mentor in a special graduate class on clowning, eons ago. But the bookstore clerk zeroed in on the sandwich. "Get your greasy sandwich off the counter. This is a bookstore." Who talks like this? Yes, the wrapped sandwich was anomalous there, matter out of place but for a moment. He had no right to sound this way, but I apologized. The purchase came to under twenty. He was so excitedly thrilled by this. "You can't have a book stamp because you didn't spend twenty today!" He bounced as he said it. New to the discount program because who cares, I quietly accepted this news. "See?" He went on, "Look. It says so right there, right on the bookmark!" I gave no reply to him. "But, of course, everyone just hates to read!" There was no humor going on. He was claiming the right to scold an old person for being nothing but that, in his eyes. I'm older and small in size. What a bully! I looked him in the face and said, "What is wrong with you?" Off balance, he said, "Nothing. This is just what's called having a sense of humor." He turned and sped off. There was no 'thank you' to complete the transaction. To me, a comic to the core, incivility is not humor at all. It's disrespect. It's a man Indulging in meanness towards an older woman because he can get away with it here and there. "Get your greasy sandwich off the counter," was so inappropriate to say, to anyone, the cruelness of it must have felt like free-flight. It was so absurdly rude he brought to mind Monty Python. I spend up to $400 a month on books. I find everyone else here at Toadstool polite, but similarly distracted and disinterested in the customers, except for the owner. But no one else is disrespectful except for this guy.

You immediately get that smell of old books when you walk in. That leather bound scent that just doesn't exist in books that are made now in days. I always wonder about the people who previously owned these books, were they treasured? given by a loved one? These aren't thoughts I contemplate when I'm at Barnes and Nobles. (Don't get me wrong though; I live B&N) It's worth a visit, even if you don't end up buying anything.

The only problem is that he runs a space heater only next to the cash register when the store is open, so it is uncomfortably cold in the wintertime. My advice is to visit one of the other nearby stores until late spring. Otherwise, bundle up!

However, I have a son who LOVES being read to, so I've been trying to make a point of buying him books, particularly from independent bookstores, since they're becoming scarcer and scarer every year. We stopped by Everyone's Books and it's what you would expect out of an independent bookstore. It felt a tad cluttered, yet very welcoming and cozy at the same time, if that even makes sense! The books seemed very diverse, inclusive, and topical - considering current events. I almost picked out a book or two for myself, but then I was like, "hahaha, don't even kid yourself!" There were some "sale" books out on tables in the middle of the store, but as you can expect, you are paying list price for most of these books - which we should be happy to do if we want to hang onto the very few bookstores we have left! After perusing the children's book section for a little bit, I picked out two social justice/awareness books for my kiddo. The register clerk lady was pleasant and quick and we were well on our way. However, like 5 minutes later, I returned back into the store after unsuccessfully hunting down a public restroom, and the sweet register lady said she forgot to give me the store's free bookmark, so it was serendipitous that I showed back up.

The books here are used but they're in a nice clean space and mostly in very good to excellent/basically new condition, so it is a great place to buy giftable books. It isn't the largest used bookstore in town but the owner clearly stocks with an eye for nice or interesting books--it feels bigger because the book selection is higher quality than usual and there is a lot to browse. The owner was very nice and chatted with us about other bookstores in the Pioneer Valley. I will definitely return!

The selection has a nice if not terribly deep mix, and there's a good group of books for young adults and children. We also liked the good choice of books about Vermont and New England. The staff was friendly, and we have the sense they are very much involved in their community, which we strongly applaud. We found some paperbacks we wanted and were pleased to see the store was busy during our visit. We'd endorse a stop here for anyone in the neighborhood.
