    I've been wanting to try a Doughty donut for ages but everytime I made it to their stall in St George's Market where they started out they were always sold out and gone home. When they opened their own little shop in Smithfield I finally knew my mission to taste their doughnuts would be successful. Mission complete this weekend and I'm now a massive fan! When I walked in and seen the huge range of different flavours and toppings I felt like a kid in a sweet shop. It was so difficult to pick just one, eventually I went for the raspberry and marshmallow. It was epic- really fresh, with plenty of raspberryness (is that even a word?) and a chewy sticky marshmallow goo in the middle. Staff are friendly and the shop is really clean and tidy. These doughnuts are up there with the likes of Krispy Kreme and Dunkin Donuts, I'd go as far as saying they are actually better.

    I've never actually been in dozy donuts but I've tasted the donuts a few times. This is mainly because Stevie M brings them home - why do he do it? I considered eating the entire box instead of having dinner. The chocolate and caramel donut was just delicious. I will update this review if I end up eating the rest of the box.

Whoever their graphic designer is, id hire him to...idk. Design my. Life. The donuts were the centre of attention - are my photo of the window display, which was eye catching and immediately had me salivating. They've managed well with COVID, but only one person in the store at a time (a wee cramped space honestly). Might be a long wait at a peak time. We had the place to ourselves however. Ok, donuts; we had A vanilla glazed - just a "control" for the taste science experiment. I have to say it was delicious and fresh, weighty and "doughy". A Boston Creme - the creme was SO GOOD. As a former donut baker, I was impressed with the minimally invasive "creme hole". Nothing was leaky, and the creme itself had a great consistency. The chocolate on top was dark, textured, and great accent visually and for the palate. A chocolate noh-tella: which for a vegan donut tasted surprisingly "unvegan". The donut was dense and full flavoured regardless of the filling; the filling was more viscous than Nutella and had generous sized nuts. A apple chai : yet to eat but apple filled, infused with chai. Looks delicious. Unlikely to be a gimmick. Donuts are so often gimmicks; a crappy donut with some bright colour slapped on it to give it appeal. But a real donut is good regardless of how dressed up it may be; and for that, the vanilla glazed takes the cake. Or yeast. Or dough. Do have a pop in. Looks like their coffee was pretty good as well, although didn't partake this time. The worker was kind and put up with my extensive donut chat, even my creme hole chat. Poor woman. Give it a shot!

    Let me begin by saying - I am a donut snob. Let me tell you what I mean:…read more - a REAL donut is a plain cake donut. Anything else; a raised (yeast), a filled - is a pastry. It may be delicious, or inventive, but it's a pastry. No hole in the middle? That's a circular pastry. Ok, now you know what I mean. I am a pointless snob. It was beat into me when I worked at an Italian donut shop (literally beat, by the head baker, with donut glazing rods. Ask me another time). So here I review the Portstewart branch. I asked 20-30 questions and observed the staff for half an hour. The whole ambiance is hip and happy. The staff were great - worked well as a team and served things up really fast. It's a spacious storefront but the serving area is cramped. The four of them moved around each other well and I think unconsciously helped patrons relax. Good staff can do that. This is especially impressive with face masks - no visible smiles, but kindness behind the mask. Go team! They also put up with my questions for half an hour. So that's great! Donuts themselves: Cinnamon sugar: disappointing. Cinnamon & sugar percentage was off. Too sugary (granted that is better than too cinnamony). Also, whoever sugared the donuts made a rookie mistake, and sugared them before they were near room temperature, which means that the sugar almost always falls off. Third mistake was the most glaring which is YOU NEVER SUGAR A RAISED DONUT - only a cake donut. It's not structurally able to hold much on its surface! Either way, as a plain donut I don't think it was terribly impressive. Espresso Glaze Donut: also disappointing. Basically just a regular donut with a wee bit of glaze on it. The glaze itself would probably do well in a larger quantity or on a cake donut. Did I mention I like cake donuts? Boston Creme: The creme was...a little salty? Different. Not off, but different. The chocolate on top was delicious. Like delicious delicious. Would but this again just for this. The creme hole was minimally invasive, always a sign of good craftsmanship. This is where a raised donut (pastry) shines. S"more: Best for last. Just come for one of these and a cup of coffee. This was a delicious masterpiece. The TLC that went into this donut is evident. Hand piped marshmallow creme, creamy-rich chocolate topping, the crumbly, undiscovered topping (graham cracker? Digestive? Some sort of sugary oat mixture?). All the elements of pastry bliss. Light and fluffy, solid chocolate flavour, and a delicious donut base! What more could you want? The chocolate was particularly good. I don't know what the source is but it had a slight bitter edge to die for. If anything will make your trip guilty, it'll probably be the smore. Maybe the decor. I wish it was five stars; but honestly I picked the best of it donuts, and only two impressed. I can't imagine what the others tasted like. The problem is, too many copies with only slight variation. A plain donut is capable of so many interesting and unique twists that bring out a mighty flavour. Guilt Trip might just be figuring that out still. Three stars, but brought up to four by the great environment & staff. It's not often that such things can save a review, but these folks truly deserved it. Anyone who lets me ask questions for 30 minutes deserves it. And thus ends my donut tome.

Given we arrived midday, and there were numerous trays of standard donuts still available, I think it a shame Guilt Trip don't produce more vegan donuts if they sell so well! Disappointed, we opted for Oatmilk Lattes which were decent enough if a little bitter. Service was slow with just one guy behind the counter. Cafe is small with limited seating. Not sure I would bother making the journey across Belfast to this place again...

    I must begin this review by explaining my previous relationship with Greggs…read more.... Way back in 2006 when I was a mere slip of a lad I set sail to Newcastle Upon Tyne (the home of Greggs) to attend University. Fresh faced and some what 'mothered' I'm not ashamed to admit I had little to no cooking experience. I could just about make a tuna pasta bake and I burnt many a pot trying to make beans on toast. But this is where Greggs stepped in and saved me from a life of eating burnt food. My salvation came in the shape of a steak slice and most of my yearly veg intake came from Greggs seasonal offering 'the festive bake'. So when I heard Greggs was coming to NI I rejoiced. Once again I could burn my tongue on a bacon and cheese turnover and once again the pound in my pocket would be enough to sicken myself on sausage rolls. Yesterday I made my pilgrimage to the new branch at the Boucher Road Retail Park, although this wasn't quite the corner shop bakery I had so fondly remembered. It almost looked too clean to be a Greggs! This store has outside seating and a comfortable cafe area to sit in, there were rows of baguettes and sandwiches, crispy creme style donuts and of course the holy grail of Greggs, the baked pastry section. I decided to purchase some sausage rolls but then, as if it were a sign from above, a delightful apron clad staff member appeared from the back of the store clutching steaming Bacon and Cheese turnovers. Before the turnovers were even in the shelf I ordered one. At £1.60 these were more expensive than I had remembered but I considered this a small pittance to pay for the taste of nostalgia. I also ordered a flat white, something that the hipsters conceived long after I had left Newcastle. Although it was machine made, it actually tasted good, not as bitter as a proper barista made blend but still drinkable. The queues moved quickly and the staff seemed to be well drilled. I imagine a team of Geordies came over and trained them, I'm sure the lad who served me whispered 'howay' under his breath. All in all it's as good as I remembered although I'm also happy to report that my life skills have improved considerably and I no longer need Greggs to survive. I will be back from time to time though for a wee treat.

A 'no coin swapping policy'. 2 policies that lack customer service. Maybe they will refuse sugar for my coffee or tea in my tea bag. Buns are also unhealthy, maybe there will be a no bun policy too.

For myself I ordered the bagel with cream cheese and smoked salmon. It was good, but I don't think it was exactly what I was feeling that morning. I really enjoyed bites of their raspberry & white chocolate pancakes and frech toast though. I'd definitely recommend that if you've got a sweet tooth. On top of that, we got an assortment of different coffees and smoothies at our table. I went for a soy milk latte for myself and a strawberry banana smoothie. Both hit the spot perfectly. Service was a little spotty. Our waters were never really refilled (and on a hungover morning, endless water is a necessity), and our server looked a bit angry to be there. The manager came around to see how everything was doing though, which was great! They have a bakery on the other side of the restaurant (where you go to pay), and have an assortment of macarons, muffins, and other baked goods. Before we left, we got a small box of macarons to share and they were lovely! I can't remember all the flavours we got, but everything I tried was delicious. If you're in the University area, definitely a good spot to check out for a nice breakfast.

It also came with a side of pesto cheese bread, which I didn't eat with the pork belly, but was delicious. I think this was around £6, which is very reasonable compared to what I would pay in San Francisco for a comparable dish. Next we ordered one 12" pizza - half lamb sausage and half mushroom. I like that they were willing to do half half pizzas and I felt the price point was very competitive for the size and quality. £8.75 for the pizza if I recall correctly. Servers were very nice and came to chat with us after our meal. The speed at which food came upout was on the slower side, but I imagine they were simply letting us enjoy our meal.

Everyone in our party of four relished their food. I ordered the Portobello Mushroom pizza which included blue cheese, spinach, truffle oil and fresh basil, it was delectable. Also refreshing to try different toppings than found in most standard pizzerias. Everything was mouth-wateringly delicious with a focus on local ingredients. My only disappointment being that they were all out of Doughzy Donuts - but next time I visit I'll have a donut for dessert!
