Breathe in... and breathe out. This is probably the most appropriate action to do when talking about Double Shot. Today, with a big thanks to my work who held the Christmas lunch there, I have had the utmost pleasure of delighting in Double Shots' foods and drinks. This is the first time I've been to Double Shot, but it definitely won't be the last.
Firstly, let's get the serious stuff out of the way -- the edibles. Is it good? Yes. Is it heckin' good? Mmmm, nearly. In this particular occasion my choice of food was their Fish and Chips. Yes, it does seem very formulaic and simple but my philosophy is if they can get the simple right then you know that they have the passion to create stunning complex creations. Regardless, the Fish and Chips -- which is the first picture in the business' Yelp page -- was Pretty Good, not Just Good nor Heckin' Good.
Perhaps the two major flaws, for me, was the quantity of the fish and the crispness of the chips. When you order this $24 dish, you are given three middle finger sized fish -- I'm not giving the middle finger... it's just for sizing purposes. Yes, the batter was Heckin' Good and had a really nice crunch, but by the time you've had your first bite and are starting to want more of it it's run out. I personally feel like If they were to have given you a couple more, totalling five, I would definitely not have had any complains. And as for the chips -- forewarning my personal preference here -- I feel like they could've done better by ensuring that it equalled the crispness of their fish. My chips were soggy, floppy, and just generally sad. Oh yes, and the side garden salad was Pretty Good -- just making sure our greens don't feel deprived.
Overall, my experience in Double Shot was simple: it needs a second shot. Disregarding my comments above, what you will find is a cafe filled with character, ambiance and great food. And with the relaxing atmosphere, the bustling sounds of the cafe and the noise of all the conversations around you, the time you spend at Double Shot will most definitely a memorable one, even if it leaves you wanting just one or two more pieces of fish. read more
