I went to Doubleday's on a Saturday to attend a Celebration of Life in the banquet hall. I was surprised at how large Doubleday's was! On the first floor, they have a spacious banquet hall, a bar, and a pull-tab machine. I'm also pretty certain I saw people playing Beer Pong or Flip Cup cups at a couple of tables in the back of the banquet room... Downstairs they have a bowling alley, a large sports bar, a pool table, and claw machines. I also saw they offer fresh made pizza and fish fry. 5 stars -- without hesitation. We bowled here yesterday Saturday 1-3-26 as a family and had a great time. Debbie, the owner, and her son Mark are genuinely kind, welcoming people who clearly care about their customers and this place. As for the negative reviews -- some people just like to complain. My class had our 50th reunion at Doubleday's and the owners were so pleasant to work with. They wanted to make sure that everything was just as we wanted and went above and beyond, even accommodating last minute changes. The variety of food offered for our buffet was very good and there was plenty available. We were able to get into the venue early enough in the day to decorate and the set up was just as we needed. I asked Gary & Debbie to put together a party for me and they went WAY out of their way to do everything that I could ask for. They put together an even that my guests were very pleased with. The food was great, we were treated so well that many of my guests remarked on how wonderful this party turned out to be. We were treated to things that were beyond what one would expect. I cannot say enough about how pleased my folks were as well as myself. The food was great, the hospitality was beyond what might be expected. All in all I don't know of anything that I would have changed or expected. We decided to stop here as part of the Madcity cocktail experience. We didn't realize it was the Jeep Invasion weekend. We had a great time! Food was good (pub food), drinks were strong and the patrons were friendly. Met the owner on the way out and was gracious about telling us about how the bar got its name. Gary said that that the inventor of baseball Abner Doubleday in 1839 as a cadet at the US Military Academy in West Point, NY. Although the claim as been debated for decades among baseball historians and fans, the popular myth remains. Doubledays gets my vote for a historic and fun place to visit. PS for those people looking for a banquet place to hold roughly 100 people. I bet it's still in the affordable range and only 20 minutes to Madison, Wi. read more

Pulled into the parking lot to see if I could see my friends car there. The owner Gary (who was also in the parking lot) got out of his truck and began to scream and swear at me because I turned around in his lot. Never heard so many "F" bombs. Will never spend money at a place that treats people outside his establishment like that. Shameful. read more

Recently had the fish fry here and it's delicious! Best place for fish fry in Cottage Grove. Large portions, fish is crispy and juicy (in a good way). We ordered ahead and picked up. Get the cheesy hash browns, the serving is a size of two fists and real tasty. Will probably be our regular fish fry spot! read more

What can I say? I love this place! We came on a quiet, and snowy, Friday night and were treated to some real old fashioned Midwest hospitality. It was fish fry night and while we didn't partake of the fish fry we did enjoy the burgers. They are nothing special but they are filling and hardy and will hit the spot. The bowling was quaint, clean, and enjoyable. It's a small alley with only ten lanes but I'm not complaining because honestly it made the whole night much more enjoyable because my kids could run around and play and I could see them at all times. Service was amazing! The owner operator (who is also a marine which I appreciate since my brother is as well) personally came out from the kitchen to welcome us. I had the shrimp and fries, perfectly seasoned and came in a timely manner. The property seemed well kept and felt as if they really really cared. Had a very good Brandy old fashion adult drink at a reasonable price, nice bar. Very clean and can handle a lot of people. Attended a paint nite here (paint afternoon, really). Drinks were cheap - definitely a plus. Looked like a fun venue, though. Lots of banquet area for receptions and the like. Softball fields too...not exactly what or who plays out there, but I've been on plenty of "softball teams" where all we do it try to out drink each other, so having one connected to a bar is a pretty great fucking idea! read more

Gary and Debbie do a great job for all there customers. We have had there Friday fish fry and it us great nice selection of food. Today we had Thanksgiving dinner there like we have had for the past 5 years and it great as always. Hands down one of the worst bar/banquet hall ever . The owner and bartenders are so rude. Unless you are white country people they treat you like second class citizens , it makes you feel like they are doing you a favor by being there. While its a very quaint place in the rural area of the city, I'm not sure what so enjoyable about it. I've been to this place dozens of times as it was rented by friends and family for events but its been the same thing all the time. You are heckled from the beginning while you're setting up the place by whoever is running the place and you are yelled at on the way out. While cleaning up audio equipment you are rushed out while also trying to clean off tables and stack chairs. The managerial staff was great with taking out the trash and cleaning up tables but after a point they stopped trying. The bartender can be gruff but that's fine, what can you expect from someone who's dealt with hundreds of drunken people? I don't know. Reviews are great for others at this place but every time I've helped the people hosting the party here, I just feel oppressed and attacked by the owners. Look elsewhere for your party location. read more

We had a blast bowling here with my fellow colleagues, had the alley all to ourselves for a daytime meeting. The lunch served for the meeting was amazing........ Rudest owner I've ever met. He insulted me because of my age "generation" is why his business is failing then I heard from all around cottage grove that he's rude and mean to everyone. What a dump. Don't waste your time or money here. We had the fish fry buffet tonight. It is open 5-9pm and we went at 7pm. There was hardly anyone there. Most of the people were at the bar and swearing and talking about very inappropriate things for us to be hearing during a family dinner. The food was not very good and was very overpriced for what it was. We tried them for the first time tonight because they are not far from home. I just wanted to give a heads up to people on a certain place that Dan and I had are wedding reception at last weekend, Double Days in Cottage Grove. We highly do not recommend people going there. We were told that we could go there Thursday before the wedding and set up are decorations. When we arrived there the only thing set up was the tables and the head table still had the dirty table clothes on them from the week before so we had to put table clothes on every single table. As we were doing this both owners were complaining about how they had two people quit and they don't have any help. They were very rude and not professional at all I was humiliated because here I have my bridesmaids that took off work to help me decorate the reception hall and the next thing I know the owner was barking orders at my friends and husbands family to set the tables. That's right my bridesmaids set every single table every fork, spoon, plate glass and my other bridesmaid was taught how to fold napkins and she had to fold 222 napkins and then put those on the table as well. The worst thing about this was that the money that we paid for this hall it was there job to set the tables and dishes but I was afraid if we did not I wouldn't have a reception. I also ordered pizza for my bridesmaids for helping me with everything and I take a seat to have a piece of the pizza that I paid for and what does the owner do, she takes a piece of the pizza and eats it and then charges me for it. You would think that after we just set up the whole hall that we paid them to do she would at least not charge me for the pizza that she helped eat. So we got all the tables set and we were told that we would have to come back Friday night after rehearsal to finish the rest of the hall because they had a fish fry that night. So all we were planning on doing was moving the tables and numbering them so the florist knew where to put each center piece. We got there Friday night at nine at night and truthfully it only should have taken about an hour. But when we walked in the owner had moved all the tables and had extra tables that we did not need. The only request I had was I wanted a clear center aisle for when we do the grand march because my sister in-law was pregnant and I did not want to make her maneuver between tables at 8 months pregnant. There was no center aisle so once again we had to rearrange all the tables. As the owner sat there and complained about everything that we were doing so on top of moving all the tables back to match my seating chart we also had to put down every chair because they were annoyed that we moved are tables back to where we wanted them. Then Dan and I went around to double check all the table numbers and they shut the lights off on us so I was irritated at that point because we were good enough to help them set up tables that we paid them to do but we couldn't even double check are work because they wanted us out of there. The night of the wedding turned out good and the only compliment I can give them was the food was actually very good and there employees besides the owners were very friendly. I was very humiliated when my aunts and uncles on both sides of are family were telling us how rude the owner was when they arrived. The owners were not friendly at all, I even had someone tell me that they should hide in there office and hire someone to interact with there customers because they were not professional at all. The best part was when I got pictures of the owner and her friends in are photo booth I am pretty sure I hired her to work not take pictures in are photo booth. I am putting this on Facebook because I wouldn't want anyone to end up with the amount of stress and disappointment that Dan and I and some of are guest had to go through on one of the best days of are life. We honestly would've paid the extra money and had it at the Sheraton if we knew how these owners treat their customers and guests. I know some of you are asking, why didn't you just tell them to do their job, unfortunately a person close to us is an acquittance of the owners so we didn't want to disrupt their relationship.
