-Great time here the other night with some of the Yelp crew. It was after the event that Ruggy lead us to this other spot. There was "Ass Juice" handed out to our group of maybe 13 or 14 and it was great. Thanks Ruggy it was great actually, did not taste like ass in a bad way or good way. -Yes, the television screens have these looping weird stuff like 70's looking porn where a midget is getting his knob polished. I know I just looked up in mid sentence and was like "what, is that porn?" -The vibe is very laid back, this was a thursday night and it was not too crowded and not completely dead either. The two bars are very similar, but DD seems more inviting - despite its grungy, pornographic decor, drink specials called Ass Juice, and heavily pierced/tattooed clientele. If you're uncomfortable around pornography then keep walking by they probably don't want you in there. You're probably too square for them. This is place is just not for me. Why were there condoms everywhere?? I went over to play a pinball machine and one was on the handle! I really wish I noticed it beforehand. I don't know if that is a regular occurrence, but once is gross enough. There is a cool outdoor area which was a nice change of pace from the other bars. Double Down also has its own custom light and dark beers and I thought they were worth the try. It's kind of a grungy place but taht could be what you are looking for. If so, head on down. The only downside about this place is that for some reason on a Thursday night it just wasn't that busy. My group had a great time though. The $6 PBR and a shot combo was taken advantage of several times. At first we were going to get jager, but our bartender (the wonderful and amazing Alison) said we had to get the Ass Juice. It wasn't bad, didn't taste like it had a lot of alcohol in it but we were assured that it did. I came in here all ready to try the bacon vodka (added picture of the bottle), but I wimped out. We were told the bacon martinis are ok but if we really wanted something tasty to go with the bacon bloody mary. One of our guys asked about just doing a straight shot of it and the response was "you don't want to do that." When a bartender who makes money from serving you more drinks tells you not to drink something, I think it's a good idea to listen. The lack of a crowd was a bummer, but the bar overall is great. Double Down Saloon is pretty much legendary as far as dive bars go in NYC. It's one of the more famous ones, along with a few others on its strip. It's exactly what you'd expect from a dive bar. Not a lot of variety in drinks beyond the basics, but drinks are cheap and strong if you know well enough to order them neat. The service is hit or miss depending on the bartender you have. I've had a variety of experiences here over the years, and the people who come here certainly are interesting. As with many dive bars, avoid the bathroom and you'll be fine. If nothing else, people watching is at its finest here and you can get some cheap but strong drinks while doing it. read more

I'm surprised it's taken me so long to check this place out. Despite the fact that all the walls are dark and covered in graffiti and other punk-era type decor the place is surprisingly clean and not horrible smelling. They have a lot going for them including: -a couch and a few cushioned booths -pool table -photo booth -a couple video games -2 for 1 happy hour until 8pm everyday (on most domestics and well liquor) -a sizeable back patio (6 picnic tables) There are downsides though. Their house beer is the worst house beer I've ever had, they managed to get a beer made to put their name on it that tastes worse than PBR. The backyard patio is really pushed to be the place to go to smoke. Everyone out there was smoking so I couldn't really get the fresh air and gentle breeze I was after. Non happy hour prices aren't anything special, most beers are 6. They do have a few beers for 5, a couple at 7, and Genese cans for $2 though. They don't have food but do have a drawer full of take out menus if you want something delivered. I'll definitely be back to try some of their "ass juice" and to take more advantage of the awesome happy hour. read more

I never write reviews, but I could not ignore how AWFUL this place is. A friend wanted to go to Double Down Saloon on a bar crawl for his birthday. There was a group of 7 of us that may not have looked like we "fit" in at a dive, but I was game. 2 of us went up to the bar to grab a round for everyone. The woman bartender with short blonde hair and glasses asked to see our IDs and did not come back for 10 minutes after claiming to be "busy" at the other side of the bar (I can tell you this bar was not crowded). She very blatently kept helping the clientele around us. After 20 minutes of no drinks, we left. We wound up at a bar across the street and had 4 rounds. Sucks you missed out on a group our size because you didn't like the way we looked. Do not recommend and would never go back. read more

WARNING: The TV's are streaming continous strange XX movies! I normally go in here without my glasses! Hahahahahha! We actually went to the Vegas location first years ago. And when we would visit New York we noticed this location. The first time we came, the music was just what we wanted like The Clash or Ramones, the happy hour was 2 for 1 until 8 and the batender was hula hooping on the bar. We knew right off it was our kinda place. The walls are covered in mural work with a large painted banner on the back wall that reads "The Happiest Place on Earth". There is a pool table which I find to be rare in NY. And I am a sucker for patio. And it's a pretty large patio. We live in New York now and I definitely enjoy stopping by here at the beginning of summer. grabbig a cheap beer with some friends and sitting in the patio. The bathrooms are super disgusting! It comes with the territory of hanging out at a dive bar. And the crowd can be a little on the crazy side. So it's best to come in pairs. The bartneders are pretty cool. Never had to wait to see a bar tender which was nice. Ass juice is their signature mixed liquor beverage known to not taste like booze but be full of it. PBR on tap. Bathrooms were actually nice when I went "early" in the night. Pool table available. Sign said something about a beer garden but being 10 degrees I didn't check it out. If you vomit, be prepared to pay 20 bucks or clean it up. Even though if you are vomiting, you may not even be mentally capable of doing either. Beware of the porn, and Bondage on the screens however. Also, you receive a drink ticket for the 2 for one, but after 8pm, the ticket is no longer valid, so make sure you use it before hand. Been coming here for years and it's been one of my go to dive bars. This all changed this past weekend when we were charged $10 for well vodka and $12 top shelf. Those are high end bar prices! It's usually $6-8. They also tried to say it was this expensive because I ordered a Red Bull vodka. Red Bull does not come out of a gun. Chloe is great, but the guy really sucks. I used to hit the Vegas double down when we were done with the strip scene and just wanted some cheap beers and good punk juke. It's actually cleaner here in NY than vegas if you believe that one, but give it time and with some wear n tear, it will get that "road hard and put away wet" look... This spot does their best to offer the cheap drinks and you'll certainly have a good time going in, expecting to be in a psycobilly, dirty, punk, greaser, average joe and lunatic bar. I've been to LA and LV kind of clubs using pornography to provide a hedonistic atmosphere, but this place was essentially a pool bar with porn on the TVs.
