STEPH JUDGEMENT: The perfect East Village dive bar. The hubby and I were on our way to the Double Down Saloon when we spotted this place on Google Maps. We were intrigued by the name and reviews describing it as a "punk rock" dive bar. It was about 4pm when we got there, and there were a few patrons taking a break from the heat. We were looking for a dive and we found it: small and dark, festooned with graffiti and stickers, and there was indeed punk rock playing--perfect. We bellied up to the bar and my eyes went right to the frozen margarita machine--yes, please. It was heaven on a 95+ degree day. The hubby got a beer and bourbon. The drinks were cheap and the bartender was nice, even gamely posing for a drawing I did of him on a Post-It that went up with all the other little drawings behind the bar. The inside is COVERED in graffiti, which is fine or even kitchy...but it's like they take pride in the lack of upkeep. The leather seats on the back sofas need to be recovered badly. Our group didn't like this bar, but we stayed for one drink because the bartender was nice and there was a cute dog in there with one of the local patrons. This is a good bar for someone that likes a zero-frills place with eclectic patrons who doesn't mind the dirty feel with hard-core angry music. Not really our jam. read more

This place is a distillation of the contemporary problem of St. Mark's place, that actual punks and starving artists cannot afford the rent here anymore, anyone left has pockets from somewhere, whether or not they'll tell you about it. This hidden oasis for the rocker in all of us is located on the Lower East Side, and a must-visit if you're looking for somewhere to listen to rad music, enjoy some cheap shots and beer, and just hang in a place that feels like somewhere Roger from RENT would frequent. My boyfriend loves this place, and we came here a couple weeks back with a few of his friends from his NYC days. It was fun, loud, and absolutely perfect. I especially love the graffiti that covers the walls - everywhere, even the bathrooms! If you look up "dive bar" on Urban Dictionary, I guarantee you that Clockwork Bar will show up. That's not to say it's a bad thing - far from it, actually. However, just know that it's not a place to bring your parents (unless of course, they're punks from the 80's themselves!). Despite the "rough around the edges" look, the bartenders are awesome and friendly. Boogie is the man - he took care of us all night, and he's great. Nice unpretentious bar in one of the last grungy areas of the city. The prices are competitive with any dive bar and you can get a beer and shot special for $3. The punk rock theme is illustrated by the graffiti covered walls and funky decor. The bathroom is covered with band stickers as a testament to the passion of its patrons. Tried the $6 frozen margarita and I wasn't disappointed. It was strong and enjoyable. The music isn't too loud so carrying a conversation is very easy. The bartenders really know their drinks and make great recommendations. Get there early as it gets packed at night and the interior layout is narrow. Comfy worn in couches in the back. Good music. Crowd depends on the day of the week... Why only 3 stars? For that one machisimo bartender that always makes me regret coming. Whether he flicks your finger off of your ID, makes you repeat your order several times, gives you the wrong beer, makes sexist jokes... he's terrible. Other bartenders are great though. Wouldn't say this is first date material but come by if you're pregaming for something. Most people are usually sloshed. Do not use your card, and stick with cash!!!! I was wandering the Lower East Side one night, on the prowl for some cheap drinks. A quick Yelp search led me to Clockwork Bar. It's so far down Essex St, that it's almost in Chinatown. It's a pretty narrow space, but it opens up as you go deeper into the bar. It's definitely a dive, graffiti seems to be the theme of the decor here, but it looks pretty cool, with various lyrics to rock songs written on the walls. They play a lot of punk rock, which I'm totally down for. But the best part of this place is the drink prices. They are ridiculously cheap. The specials in my photo run ALL DAY. They are as follows: $6 High Life Tall Boy + Shot $5 Budweiser + Shot $6 Frozen Margarita $6 Well Drinks $6 Pickle Back $10 Beer-A-Rita!! I can drink all night for these prices. It was a busy day so Daredevil said to stay in the area and they'd call me when it was my time to shine. So at the late hour of I think 1130 am I found Clockwork Bar, which just so happened to be doing a beer and a shot combo for THREE FREAKING DOLLARS. Guys, I'm not kidding you. Credit card minimum was $20 and the beer+shot combo was $3. Now this might not be an all of the time thing they got going on, and maybe I hit the drinker's amber gold, but for $21 + tip (and yes, you need to tip you cheap bastards) I got 14 drinks. You read that correctly. Fourteen drinks for $21 before tip. By the time I had gotten to the credit card minimum I got the call I had completely forgotten about to go get tattooed so it all worked out in the end. Clockwork is my jam. read more

They've got some great deals. I came in a Sunday evening and they had budweiser and a shot for $3. Nowhere has it that cheap! They also had a deal on well drinks for $6. I wasn't sure what is considered a well drink so I googled it and it said Long island iced tea is considered one. Little did I know that they'd charge me over $15 for that. The bartender claimed that it's more expensive due to it having more alcohol but over 15?? I was also charged $3 extra for something that I have no idea about. Tax? I dont know....but I probably won't get long island iced tea. Thats probably the only thing thats priced like a regular NYC bar drink. Anyway I've gone here with several dates and its amazing to just spend $12 excluding tip and both of us get at least tipsy. read more

Actually a few bathrooms downstairs that weren't taken up the entire time. This place is a little gem. The only reason why I gave it 4 stars is because the bleach blonde bartender kept trying to overshadow the other bartender I was talking to.
