STEPH JUDGEMENT: An unexpected outpost of the dive bar originally from Vegas. I spotted this place on Google Maps while planning for our NY trip, and at first I didn't think it could be related to the bar of the same name in Vegas. If you've ever been, you'd be hard-pressed to believe that it could be re-created anywhere else, but here it was, a fascinating simulacrum some 2,500 miles from the original location. It was larger than the Vegas location, but otherwise looked incredibly similar, with a plethora of graffiti and stickers on its walls, and questionable videos playing on the little tv behind the bar. This location did have a pleasant little outdoor seating area out the back, which would be impossible in Vegas, so bonus points for that. They also have their infamous ASS JUICE, which I've never tried, but had heard "wasn't too bad". We kept things simple with beer and bourbon and had a pleasant time taking in the atmosphere and chatting with the bartender. read more

I found this lovely dove var whole visiting a friend up north. I like a good dive bar with character and this definitely checked all my boxes: affordable drinks, friendly and attentive staff, and it's got a lot of character! They played a lot of older, not often heard on the radio punk rock. ORDER THE ASS SHOT Does the name make you raise an eyebrow, yes. Does the color, a long with the name have to raising the other eyebrow, also yes.......but it is only $5 and I have to admit, it's a tasty little creeper. **Google won't show my review so I'm putting it here** I had to stop going to Double Down on Saturday nights because of the female bartender that works here, I believe her name is Aya. I don't know if she owns the bar because every time she kicks someone out she always yells "get out of my bar" so if she's the owner, she is setting a horrible example. She is the most unpleasant person that works there, I seriously believe she strongly dislikes her job. On one occasion, my friend and I walked up to the bar and she was chatting it up with someone so my friend said "excuse me" and she looked over at us, rolled her eyes and said "what?" So we ordered our drinks, paid cash, tipped, and walked away. We get back up to order the next round and she's doing shots in the corner with a bunch of people I assume are her friends since she was talking with them all night, and then proceeded to leave the bar to go play pool while the male bartender seemed to have been doing most of the work. We decided to order our drinks from him for the rest of the night, which is unfair for him but at least we got our drinks fast and he was actually friendly. Another time I saw her leave the bathroom with a man while on shift which is insane to me considering there are signs all over that say the bathrooms are for one person. I only have two assumptions for that, but while on shift is totally unacceptable but maybe she used the restroom, who knows? But what I do know is that she is so rude she makes going to double down so unpleasant, that I had to change my days of going there so I can have a good time. I love this bar so much but she needs an attitude adjustment and to take her job more seriously, you're at work, act like it. read more

$2 Genesee beers all day until 8pm? INFLATION GETTING DOG WALKED!! But fr $2 beers in 2024 in Lower Manhattan is like finding a unicorn, and I don't even like beer like that. I've walked by Double Down Saloon thousands of times at this point, but it just looked a little too grungy for my taste. However, when a group of writer friends were meeting here to take advantage of the $2 beers hack, it was time. I walked in at 6pm on a Friday, dapped 2 of the homies up, and scoped the scenery out: Graffiti all over the dark walls, "Ass Juice" being sold for $5, a couple of sharks running the worn in pool table, displays of coitus on the small TVs, a jukebox from the 50s, and a back patio where patrons are free to smoke cigarettes and other extracurriculars. This is the final boss of dive bars. Bartenders on their "what can I get ya, hun?" It's a time capsule of what the East Village was 30 years ago. Now EV is just androgynous guys in light wash jeans and wife beaters and girls with a couple fine line tattoos placed randomly on the arms in some black loafers and white socks, who will both happily pay $20 a cocktail. Our group of 8 sat on the back patio crushing Genesees and nicotine. One of my big homies even tried to see how many he could stack on one another before the tower fell. Double Down Saloon is not for the faint of heart, but it is a good spot for a drink and some people-watching in the East Village. We stopped in for a mid-afternoon refresher, and had a good time settling into the very Avenue A vibe. While the smell, service, and viewing materials were a little bit on the far side of unsavory for my taste, you get what you pay for. I do give this spot props for being a real-deal dive bar in a city where that is increasingly hard to find. read more

They even have "ass juice" (some sort of fruit punch) for just $4, if you're into it. You certainly don't come here for their beer selection, but more looking for a place to mind your own freaking business and be left alone. So indulge yourself here enjoying a peaceful drink while listening to cool tunes. True, you may get distracted by their small tv showing x-rated scenes you most surely won't find (almost) anywhere else, but this is part of the experience at Double Down Saloon. A super divey dive bar that I was told was a rite of passage for visitors to the Lower East Side. Came here on the way to another bar and we all took a shot of their special Assjuice (this tasted like pineapple and you couldn't really tell what liquors were used). Plenty of indoor seating and the crowd was quite eclectic. They have games as well as TVs. read more

double down bleh tldr; go to The Library across the street instead tw: racism, racial slurs, misogynoir Recently my friends and I had an evening where we were able to visit a spots in the neighborhood, and stopped by Double Down to enjoy the ambiance and photobooth because some folks in the group had already been and enjoyed it. Upon arrival, the barkeep was a bit distant and short, but we attributed their apprehension to having to deal with a large group. We try to stay organized and mindful, but who knows. The place had a few small groups clustered throughout, but otherwise things were spacious. After settling in a booth in the back, we decided to have a round of picklebacks and headed to the bar to enjoy them in a swift motion. I ordered the picklebacks and as they were poured out I sat at the bar with my credit card in hand, cueing my intention to pay immediately. The barkeep announced in a very condescending tone "so how are you paying for this?" to the group--I had already been up front hoping to continue our interaction but I jumped in again to present them with the card. After dispersing from the awkward moment, my close friend and I went to the restrooms where there happened to be a line. We were chatting, people were playing pool nearby, and a lady in a vest with brown hair stood in front of us in line with two rolls of toilet paper. A door swung open from one of the bathrooms and a tall man stepped out, beer in hand. He walked up to the individual with the toilet paper, exchanged a brief greeting, and looked up. He stared down at my friend and in a loud, projected, and singing tone screamed the n word with the hard r at my friend--in a whiplash I said , "Excuse me?" but he looked at the individual with toilet paper and began making jokes about using the restroom. I looked around and the individuals playing pool and the bar were staring at us, but no one intervened. In a space so empty this extremely violent man just stepped back into a regular flow after casually being so destructive and vicious. My friend and I swung around and met the rest of the group to leave instead of staying. On the way out we noticed the individual who replaced the toilet paper was behind the bar as well. I don't understand how the man was allowed to walk his way back into the bar and not confronted and escorted out. This place clearly does not have a culture around safety, care, or accountability. It's unfortunate, but there is no reason to excuse spots like this. I'm good off it! The Library across the street was a wonderful spot! Even despite miscommunication with the barkeep across the street, we maintained a cordial dialogue. I'll never forget this, and I hope our experience helps inform the decisions of others. read more

Cheap dive bars are really hard to find these days. This one pretty much fits the bill and I'm kind of floored that I've never been here. Everything is $2 off until 8pm. Which rounds everything on tap out to be about $5. After happy hour ends there's canned beer for $4 and something as well called 'ass juice'. I was tempted. Trust me. I was tempted. But the ass juice will have to wait for another day. Someone said it tastes sweet. But they didn't comment on if it's actually good or not. It was just a 'it's sweet/no comment' kind of description. There's a pool table in the back and I guess they allow outside food because they didn't seem to have a problem when I brought in slices from a $1.50 pizza shop next door. Wasn't too crowded when I went and surprisingly more sanitary than other dives I've been to. So kuddos for that. read more

I visited this bar expecting a fun night out, but was immediately met with rude and unprofessional behavior from the bouncer. Not only was he aggressive and dismissive towards my friend who was a person of the LGBT community, but it ruined our whole groups mood post the fact he wasnt allowed in. This review is more about a memorable day than the bar itself. As for the bar, it's your typical NYC dive: bathrooms that seem to have been designed by a committee of construction workers with questionable hygiene habits, walls plastered with enough stickers to make a sticker factory jealous, and an assortment of consultant bros just out of an MBA program. The service, however, has always been top-notch, with bartenders who are surprisingly accommodating for a place that doesn't seem to care about much else. Now, about the incident on 12/25/2024--Christmas night, of all times. I frequent this bar because, let's face it, they have one of the best pool tables in the East Village. As for the bathrooms? Well, they're a bit of an adventure, like a scavenger hunt where you try to locate the door amidst the sticker chaos. My sister, in her infinite wisdom, didn't lock the door because, honestly, who could find it? Naturally, a drunk man stumbled in after her--because why use the other bathroom when you can make a bold mistake, right? Instead of realizing the obvious error, he called her an "idiot bitch" for not locking the door. I approached him and, after a quick and very polite request for him to be less of a jackass, I let it go. But as he came out of the bathroom, he approached my sister and got aggressive with her, and I stepped in. Now, mind you, this guy was not just drunk; I can only assume he was on the spectrum. His behavior was... well, it left a lot to be desired. I repeatedly told him to back off before things escalated, while he proudly delivered a masterclass in juvenile insults, like "Go fuck yourselves!" Eventually, the bouncer came over and asked us to leave, because get this--turns out, this guy was the owner of the bar. I can't say for sure if that's true, but it's a little tough to swallow that we were asked to leave after standing our ground against an obviously drunk, possibly spectrum-challenged, and certainly inappropriate bar owner. As a Marine Corps veteran, I found this kind of behavior extra triggering. So, my advice? Skip this place if you're a veteran--or, really, if you're a woman in general. You might leave with more than just a bad taste in your mouth. read more

Just updating this review to let everyone know that they did, indeed, survive Covid. However, the graffiti in the bathroom did not for some reason (RIP). Drinks were still great, but you do still have to buy a cracker or some shit to have a drink. I'm not sure if that's even still a rule but they're definitely doing it last time I went (about a month ago). Great to see them survive. I was super stoked when I saw that Double Down was open again after a year of lockdown. We thought they didn't survive the pandemic! On our first night back, our bill was unusually high even though we only had two drinks each. We thought maybe they just gave us top shelf tequila or something, so we didn't think much more about it. The second time we came back, my friend paid the bill but also noticed it was a bit high for what we ordered. This evening, we ordered two well drinks and three beers. The server told us the well drinks were $8 each and the beer was $7 each. So... 16+21=37 right? When I closed out, she only gave me the credit card receipt, for which the charge was $45! I was a bit tipsy at the time so I didn't do the math at that point and gave her a 20% tip. I don't want to accuse anyone of wrongdoing without knowing their intention, but it seems like even with taxes, the pre-tip charge should not have been that high. There was no mention that gratuity (or a Covid recovery fee) had been added. We will not be coming back. read more

Came in for the first time yesterday June, 4th, 22 at about 11pm to meet up with some friends. As I ask the bartender for a drink (Girl, Tall, white, skinny, tattoos all over herself, dark hair) she decides that it's a good idea to basically make fun of my tattoo which was so random and actually pretty hilarious that people act such ways because you could tell by her mannerisms, that she wanted this to hurt me. Of course I disregarded her words, just told her I liked my tattoo. You look at her and all you see is depression and hate. Someone who was definitely bullied and now in her small little social hole called a bar, she thinks it's ok to try and place herself higher than others. Again, when you're an adult these things really should not bother you, which it doesn't, but luckily I also am confident. People go to bars to be free and relieve stress not get "bullied" by victims. Interesting. I'm a huge fan of the library. It's one of my favourite bars, and one of the bars I pretty much learned how to drink in. When I was younger, I wanted to expand my divebar love and headed to DDS across the street. I instantly felt unwelcomed and left. 8 years later, my friend and I are doing a Christmas crawl, and he suggest DDS. I begrudgingly say yes. All ratings of this place are warranted because it's KING dive bar. It's an absolute pile of shit but it embraces itself, and is exactly what it wants it to be. If you're looking for a real dive bar, skip out on Lucy's and just head here. The place is pretty big and even has a backyard. They're a bunch of tvs that play weird things -- usually niche porn (Japanese BDSM, Little people) and vintage porn. The seats are sticky, and the back area smells strongly of piss. The bathrooms are truly disgusting and don't have locks that work all the time. Beer are cheaper if you pay in cash. Bartenders have a "fuck you" attitude. It's dressed up to be a punkrock bar, but I think the spirit of punk, punk rock, and metal have left long time ago. read more

Ah...this is one of the weirdest damn bars I've ever stepped foot in. The entrance is covered with graffiti, giving you some idea what you're in for. Only, not: the bar is much larger than you'd expect at first and the atmosphere is chaotic: TVs alternately showing sports, horror movies, and some kind of bizarre 80s porn. Drink and shot combos run $6, they serve up a bacon martini, and their house shot is the Ass Juice. $4 gets you a shot of the ends of liquor bottles. Goes down pretty smooth, all things considered.
