Love the things they have! Its a bit of a sketchy area though so always keep a lookout but that's not the stores fault.

Although other stores may offer larger and better quality items which still varies week to week, I love how John the owner finds ways of keeping customers coming back including Ikea bag fills, raffle tickets to attend their drawing every Saturday through Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 that can win you store credit which keeps you coming back even more, golden tickets on Fridays hidden throughout the store that it found and when you are free item along with a drink or snack of your choice and a wheel spin that can win other prizes and discounts or points that you add up for all of your purchases that you can use towards more raffle tickets to win or discounts off of your purchase. Destiny is one of the most kind hardworking and supportive store associates I have ever met and she also makes me feel incredibly welcome every time I come back. This place also offers U-Haul rentals and a pickleball court to rent out. If you're only going to go to this store once you absolutely need to go Friday morning when items are only $9 and be there an hour prior to be first in line and get access to the best stuff! Or Thursday morning when everything is 50 cents or less. Definitely download the app so you're getting points for your purchases, exclusive discounts and alerts for other specials plus you can refer other friends to the app and give them a $5 discount off of their first purchase plus you get store credit just for referring them. Sun Valley

The DISCOUNT PLACE (aka "98"), Whomever it was who coined…read morethe term "Hole in the wall" could've easily been referring to this tiny general merchandise store hidden deep inside an unkempt mini-strip mall in the heart of Scum Valley. Opps sorry, I meant to say Sun Valley.... The store is difficult to spot from the main street, Sunland Blvd, and is completely invisible from Nettleton, the adjoining street. The best way to visit this local gem is via the alley behind the mall which begins off of Nettleton Street. Park in any of the first 5 parking spaces and the nose of your car will be pointing directly at this bodega. As I said, this place is TINY, maybe 300 to 400 square feet of floor space max! Yet, despite their small size somehow they almost always seem to have the item I need on a shelf waiting for me. For example: A few days ago, following a shopping expedition to Target & CVS, I found that I was still "in need" of a few odd items; an extension telephone cable, a female 2 female coupler, some utility candles, and some butane fuel for a camping stove. Believe it or not they had them all and the best part is: I paid only .98 cents each! (ALMOST everything is at that price point here.) I do have one complaint, which cost them a star, they recently began charging customers .10 for carryout bags. Yes, I can hear some of you thinkin: 'So what dude, lots of stores charge for bags in LA cause its' the law. All the stores are doing it, Duh.' It is a fact that "all" stores seem to be suddenly charging this bag-tax but only a specific few are required to do so. Many, like this shop are exempt but want to charge me anyway, which irritates me. Additionally, stores, such as this one, collect the fee and then give you the type of plastic bag that has been banned from use by the same law which establishes the tax! The law states that a store with sales over 1 mil./yr must provide either paper bags or reusable plastic bags (meaning the bag must be able to be used carry something like 20 lbs. for at least 50- 100 x's). IT SPECIFICALLY PROHIBITS plastic single use bags, PERIOD. Obviously, this is a new pet peeve of mine...so if it is not an issue to you, then uh never-mind. The store is open daily from 8 to 8 and seems to be family owned/operated. Due to the imminent opening of a Dollar Tree store less than a quarter of a mile away this business' days may be numbered. So If you find yourself anywhere in the area and are thinkin of going to the .99 Cent Store to get something...GO TO THE DISCOUNT PLACE and help out a neighbor instead. You'll get a Gold Star for the day if you do! Oh, one last thing...the name is almost misleading, the prices on an item by item basis are the same as elsewhere. I have never found any real bargains there, at least not price-wise. Ciao fer now! D

HOW have I gone this long without reviewing Smarty's!?!?!…read more My daughter and I are Art's biggest fans. Every Thursday (which is when Art gets in his pallets of new inventory), she says to me "Happy Smarty's Day!" You just never know what you are going to find here. We have gotten the following items in the past year or two: a brand new Samsung dishwasher (a model that had only been on the market for five months, new in the box for over $700 off retail price!), a Ninja Creamy ice cream machine, Instant Pot lid that turns it into an air fryer, Dyson and Shark vacuum cleaners for hundreds off list price, deck boxes and hose reels for the backyard, a new microwave, an amazing array of plastic storage bins in all sizes for the garage/storage locker...and that's just off the top of my head! Going to Smarty's is our weekly treasure hunt. More than once, my daughter has bemoaned that she bought something elsewhere only to find it later at Smarty's for a fraction of the price. On the rare occasion that something we bought ended up damaged after we opened the box (which does happen from time to time, given the nature of the business of buying pallets of stuff from Amazon, Target, Walmart, etc.), Art has always made good and given us a full refund. I am almost loathe to tell people about this store because I want to keep these amazing, secret deals all to myself, but I also want Art to stay in business forever. Thanks, Art! We'll see you on Thursday! :)

It was so dirty that I genuinely wouldn't be surprised if there were rodents. I could barely stomach being inside long enough to grab two pots and pans, and that was only because I planned to go home and scrub them myself. Then, as I'm standing in line with ONLY two items, right before it's my turn, the cashier Maria suddenly decides she's "going on break." She had ONE person left -- me -- and she still walked off. The lack of basic courtesy or customer service was unreal. But what truly pushed me over the edge was what happened next. I called the establishment to speak with a manager, just to express how unacceptable the service was -- and the manager on duty hung up on me. Rude, dismissive, and completely unprofessional. I was absolutely baffled. I have never in my life experienced such a disgusting lack of customer service. And frankly, based on how I was treated, it felt racially motivated. The level of disregard and disrespect was unbelievable. This entire situation is beyond unacceptable, especially in 2025. This needs to be addressed immediately, because if it isn't, I will not hesitate to record a full breakdown of my experience and publish it on TikTok. People deserve to know how customers are actually being treated. The whole experience was disgusting, disrespectful, and completely out of line.

Make sure to check the safety labels and packaging are still intact before buying. As some people open things, take a bite of sniff then walk away without buying. Definitely worth a look here.
