Scab on pinky from nail tech filing my skin away
Jesse C.

I don't really like leaving negative reviews, but I honestly would not recommend this place to my friends or family, or anyone really. To be fair, I've only been here once and received a manicure. I've never had any other services done here. I'll start with the pros. I made an appointment for two shellac manicures for my sister and I. When we arrived, they had everything set up and ready, and were pretty much just sitting there waiting for us. They're very prompt and timely. My nail tech was also very focused and took her time, to the point that my manicure was nearly two hours long. Now for the cons, you'd think that my manicure would be perfect if it took that long, but it wasn't even close. I already had dip powder on my nails so she had to remove that first. She proceeded to file them down before soaking them in acetone/alcohol. She started to file my nail down but was also filing my skin at the same time. She kept on filing and eventually broke skin (scab on my pinky as pictured). That definitely didn't feel great when she applied the acetone/alcohol soak. Also, the application of the shellac was not even. She did two layers whereas most places I've been to do three. Honestly, I am just very disappointed for the price I paid. They charged me $15 for the dip powder removal (which is outrageous! I've never been charged more than $5 for this) and $35 for the shellac manicure (which is usually ~$25 at most other salons). This is supposed to be a higher end salon so I just expected a better experience. Also, my sister's shellac manicure started to lift after 3 days. I only came here because I had a gift certificate. Sadly, I probably will not come back.

Job interview
Casandra H.

This is a job interview that went very wrong...very unprofessional and rude, imagine who they do hire and treat employees...it does trickle down to the customer...I wouldn't recommend to work or get services.

They fried my hair. I paid good money for the highlighted hair to be full of split ends now. I do not recommend this place.

Walking in they have a small waiting area and although there are 4 chairs, that's not enough. I…read morewent on Friday and it was pretty busy and they were behind cuz it was about a good 15-20 min wait. Front desk lady was real nice checking me in (but seemed confused about the whole yelp thing and read my email for a little while, as well as scheduling didn't seem to be all familiar with the yelp situation either which made making an appt super confusing since first time guests get the same free service they were offering for the yelp drawing- so it ended with a 'well first time guest get it free so it's the same thing' ) Once you walk back the hall way (in clackamas location) was super cool! It looked kinda castle like. The room it's self was rather small, not that a ton of room is needed but it did feel a little crowded. The walls and ceiling seemed a little outdated, but that honestly has nothing to do with the services itself, just not appealing to the eye, however they did tell me they are open every single day and just haven't had time to update. My technician, Alicia, was so amazing! Really nice, sweet, and explained everything to me. What she will do, how she will do it, why she was using certain things and so on. So this place uses a special European comfort wax, which is a gorgeous deep amethyst color and apparently is made specifically for this waxing company. It's a certain mix that supposed to make the wax more 'comfortable' . I figured it was just a hype but I was actually really surprised! It's a hard wax, which means no strips, it drys on your skin and hardens up to be ripped off. I've used many types of waxes and I felt like this wax was very.. fluffy?? Silky? Airy? I'm not sure how to describe it, but like you didn't really notice it going on. It seemed pretty flexible too so it didn't snap or break when being taken off. I would have enjoyed having a side my side comparison with another wax to see if what I thought in my head was real. Before waxing took place they wipe you down with an oil to keep the wax from sticking to your skin. Then after wipe you down with an oil to get any residue off and also an anti ingrown hair wipe. After a full 24 hours I was really surprised at how well the area looked. It wasn't irritated or sensitive. It all was totally normal. They offer deals too which I've never seen a wax place do- anything from buy X get Y free to unlimited waxing for the year, all discounted. I really enjoyed the experience and would love to try some more waxing. Update: Ive had plenty of waxes before and the grow out of always less than fun, especially near intimate areas. Grow back had been pretty similar as other places, BUT the months to follow have shown a real difference. Im not sure how to really explain it if you havent experienced it before. Ill just say results have been more than expected and better than other places i have been to (and a noticeably less amount of hair back)

I'm leaving a two-star review because, although the place itself is friendly and clean, my actual…read moreservice and overall experience were very disappointing. I'm rating the service I received, not the environment. The person who waxed me was kind, and the company's website says she has four years of experience. However, as someone who has been getting waxed regularly for over a year (about twice a month), I was honestly shocked by the quality of the service. During my appointment, the same area was waxed multiple times--far more than it should have been--which left my skin irritated. I chose not to point out the areas that were missed after the appointment because the same spots had already been waxed repeatedly and I didn't want to risk even more irritation. I checked out, said the service was okay, paid the usual $40, and left. When I got home, I had to tweeze about 16 hairs from my upper lip myself and heavily moisturize my skin to calm the irritation and redness. While the staff was kind and the space was clean, the quality of the work was extremely disappointing and far below what I expected from a professional service.

The girls who did our services were awesome. All of the students seemed to be working hard and…read moredoing well! We were happy with that. On the other hand the people running the place were super unprofessional and unfriendly. The person at the front desk was frantic that our appointment times were messed up. I even called the day before to confirm and when I arrived it still wasn't right. I wasn't even upset and she totally got flustered and made me feel a bit uncomfortable. The instructor on the floor was rude, unfriendly and spoke rudely to the others working with him, both the people working seemed to be snapping at eachother. Weird vibe, I was definitely not comfortable. I also witnessed 2 other "situations" with other customers while I sat and waited. I the students were great, services were quite pleasant but everything else, not so much!

It's sad. I've been a Phagan's customer for more than 30 years but I can no longer recommend it…read more Not after being talked to like a naughty child, my follow-up voice mail ignored, and my attempt to speak on the phone several days later met with a 20 minute hold and then disconnect after being "transferred" to the office. When I tried one last time (I only wanted the original caller's name) and explained the situation and my frustration to the desk person, she was disinterested. The services are good enough but apparently the school does not teach its students on the floor how to deal with customers or topics of conversation that make them uncomfortable. This will not serve them well if they become employed in their industry of choice since hair salons are famous for saucy gossip, complaints about husbands, and all manner of confidential topics. I have worked as a writer on sexuality topics and the adult entertainment industry for some time. In fact, I learned about the school from a now retired instructor who interviewed me on their cable show back in the 1990s. I have never had a problem with a student or staff member... until last Friday when it would appear that a young woman expected me to read her mind. Had I known she was "freaked out" (the caller's words), I would have apologized and changed the subject or just been quiet. I wasn't given any of those courtesies. In fact, when I tried to find out who had called me that following Monday, my voice mail was ignored and my follow-up phone call (Thursday) placed on hold until the system disconnected after 20 minutes. Given this policy of unprofessionalism and refusal to provide basic information, I simply can not recommend it. There's no knowing what will trigger someone ill-prepared to self-advocate, no path toward extending an apology, and no accountability on the part of the staff. This is not how I hoped my long history with Phagan's to end, but here we are... and here is my revocation of recommendation. Fortunately, Portland has several alternatives. Prior to Phagan's, I was a customer of Beau Monde (longest running beauty school in the city) and may well return there. Portland also has Aveda Institute, Portland Beauty Academy, and Summit Salon. I'm sure there are others.
