I was probably one of their first customers when this one opened in the early 90's.....I was only in my teens at the time, and the food has yet to be as good as it was when it first opened, however, it's kept true to it's roots and the food is still excellent. The A la carte burritos (chicken, steak) are to die for if you like the saucy wet burritos. The shrimp burrito is to die even more for, and the shrimps are substantial in size, easily qualifiable as prawns. The atmosphere is relaxed, and the service is moderately fast. I would've gone to DOS much more frequently during my undergraduate years at UCD had I realized HOW GOOD OF A DEAL some of their food is. Many thanks to the Yelpers that promoted the Yucatan salad, which seriously can last two meals and is also great for sharing! But just because I love that one salad, doesn't mean everything is absolutely perfect. A lot of things don't come with chips/salsa bar and no way I'm ever going to pay extra for it. The Sante Fe nachos are mehhhhh, and the burritos remind me of chipotle but less stuffed. Actually, to think of it, everything just tastes like chipotle in more varieties. This was a nice enough Tex-Mex, a la Cactus Taqueria (Berkeley & Oakland) or Picante (Berkeley) (although with a touch of Tex) spot that we found in Davis. They have a lot of cheap beer, which I loved. However, my fish tacos were OK, pretty bland, and the chips and salsas were, you guessed it, bland. Dos Coyotes is a pretty good joint. I was traveling on a road trip with a couple of friends and was able to stop by a decent place to eat (instead of resorting to the typical McDonalds or Subway). They food gets to your table pretty fast, and there is a wide selection of many different menu items to choose from. I ordered the Yucatan Chicken Salad and it was very very good. It had a decent mix of different vegetables - cabbage and avocado included - yummy! The chicken was very well seasoned and delicious and juicy. One bite definitely screamed freshness and variety. The salsa selection is also very good - they had a whole bar of it. Not only did they have a variety of different salsas, but they also had some of the delicious avocado sauce that I love. I am a HUGE fan of avocados in all shapes, sizes and forms, and definitely went to town on putting that on my salad. Sooooo delicious. Finally, a nice perk of Dos Coyotes is the little soda machine that has a computerized system for you to select the drink that you want once you order a fountain drink. So much fancier than the typical dispensers. You'll have a lot of fun playing with it (just don't play with it too much to get you kicked out). They didn't copy the order the same ( different beans missing guac ECT) it was uncomfortable to watch my finance finish his meal while I was still waiting for mine. After reading some of these reviews, I felt that I needed to write my own to do it some justice. I've been coming to Dos since I was a kid. Always a staple, always a favorite. If I still lived in Davis, I would eat at Dos at least once a week. Even though I don't, I 9 times out of 10 I will eat here when I visit family. They have never once gotten my order wrong and never once have I had anything that wasn't fresh. The staff have never been unfriendly and your orders are ready so quick that they are sometimes ready before you sit down. As for favorites: Burritos: Southwest, Shrimp burritos, Border burrito, Paella. (That's the majority of them, I think. Which means they're all good for different reasons.) Salad: Adobe (you can turn it into a burrito when you've eaten half the salad and save it for later- a two for one deal). Nachos: Navajo Nachos (all the guac!) Salsa: Green "tomatillo" (sweet and incredible. You can also order it in quart and pint sizes if you want to take it home.) Others: Howlin Tostada As an added bonus, I know the guy (Bobby "Coyote") who started the restaurant who is very nice and friendly. And obviously he's doing so well that he was able to open several locations, including Sacramento. If you go to Sac State, there's a Dos very close to campus. I personally love this place. The food is not as spicy or what you would expect from authentic mexican food. It's fresh it's like a better version of chipotle but without the spice. Some of their salsa are okay.I only recommend one of their red mixed salsa with cilantro and onion as well as their creamy light green salsa. Otherwise, this food has less salt grilled and fresh and just healthy. I got the order of soup here which is one of my fall favorites that they have on their special menu. Green chile chicken soup. I'm always happy when I come during the Oct-Dec months when they carry this soup. It's definitely flavorful and one of the items that has a good kick with chicken and potatoes and a few other ingredients. I also ordered the hatch chile quesadilla with chicken although I would ask for grilled chicken instead of the shredded chicken they put in. If they can't do that just get the hatch chile quesadilla without meat. Absolutely enjoyed all of my meal with also taking a soup to go because I can't get this soup in the bay area and I knew one bowl would not be enough! This is the place to go for healthy quick latin food. You can order up front at the registers and wait for your meal to be ready at the table with your number. I've never had an issue here other than wanting more salt and lemon on my food (I don't eat healthy and love me some sodium! lol) otherwise good reasonably priced food. There were multiple orders with pick up times who got their food before me and people who walked in, ate and finished before I got my food. Burrito size has gotten smaller over the years, but I always have to stop by on my way to the Tahoe. I love their salads, they are massive, I can seriously split it into 3 separate meals. This place can be a hit or a miss but I generally have had a good experience here. The food here depending on the dish can be really good or just sloppy. The only thing that Dos does right is their salsa bar. They have a variety of unlimited salsa and limes and lemons, which is always a nice thing to have. This place is clean, has friendly wait staff (with long, perfectly curled hair), and, and HUGE portions. Best be sharing the burritos, because both my sister and I found that we only could finish at most half of our order. Nachos aren't super special, but the salsa bar that they have is quite delicious. I love having variety. I only wish that they provided bigger cups for the salsa, because I kept on getting up to get more to fill my obsession with the tomatoey goodness. Super delicious. What sets Dos Coyotes apart from another other Mexican food I've tried is their seasonal specials. I love the Yolo Burrito in the summer and their chicken burrito with red potatoes pressed and grilled in the Spring/Summer. When ordering off their original menu, I've found the nachos to be superb. The salsa bar they have is also amazing! There are many different kinds of salsa for the differing taste buds. I love their hot salsa with pepper flakes in it (my fiance, not so much), but their garden salsa is hands down the best year round. Along with the seasonal entrees, the seasonal salsas are the best. The cranberry salsa they have in winter works with any of the entrees as does their strawberry cilantro-lime in the spring/summer. The soda machine they got shortly after I started going here, made this place even more popular. There were times, on a Friday night, that we would have to wait to steal a table once someone let. This place is never short on business no matter when you come, yet they always are willing to help you find a seat and fast on getting you your order. I live in south Davis and when I'm too lazy to drive to Guads for my Mexican food fix, I just drive across my apartment to Dos. I normally order a burrito and put hellla salsa on it from the salsa bar. Nothing comes between me and a good salsa bar! They have so many kinds with different spice levels. I've wanted to like this place for years, but just never have been able to find something to love here. Several of my siblings and friends live the place, but I've found it too loud inside and my food consistently was not prepared as ordered. I get that it is supposed to be somewhat industrial feeling inside with the decor and all, but whenever I've tried to eat there and get stuck inside, I can't hear anyone at my table without shouting...not my idea of a good time. If you luck out and get an outdoor table, get ready to feel like you're an animal at the zoo. The little cage is by a heavily trafficked spot in the marketplace and everyone just looks over to see what you're eating. The food itself isn't really Mexican, but kind of that fusion-Mexican stuff imo. It seems presentation is almost more important than getting the orders correct and quick, friendly service. Dos is a good place to get your Southwestern cravings. I wouldn't consider this as authentic Mexican food. My boyfriend and I usually order the Steak Border Burrito. The steak is tastier than the steak at Guad's. I've also tried the shrimp burrito which has rice, four pieces of shrimp, and a cream sauce. The quality of food is good as the seafood is fresh. The only bad part is that the burritos are soooo tiny!!! It's not filled with a lot of stuffing and meat, so I can easily eat an entire burrito. The salads aren't too good. Although they are a good size, the flavors don't stand out. I've tried the Yucatan Chicken Salad which has chicken breast, black beans, red onion, carrot, sweet peppers, cabbage, and corn. It is served on a flour tortilla with fruit salsa, chipotle cream and tortilla strips. The tortilla gives the salad some crunch, but doesn't help with taste. The food is more expensive compared to the other Mexican restaurants. The noise in the North Davis Dos is also a turn off. I am practically yelling across the table due to the noise. read more

My favorite dishes at Dos Coyotes is the CHICKEN ENCHILADA PLATE (comes with rice, beans, and chips) and the MAHI MAHI BURRITO (comes with a side of chips). The enchilada has cheese and sauce all over the top and I love to dip the chips in it. One enchilada plate fills up both me and my sister, so the portions are big. All the varieties Dos has is really interesting. Get the shrimp burrito! It's terrific. I want to try a lot of the seafood related things on the menu just bc you can't really get it anywhere else. I was pleasantly surprised by their Charbroiled Fajita Salad. The portion size is HUGE. First off, I have to comment about all the sub-par ratings that complain that Dos Coyotes is "Americanized" or "Not Authentic" Mexican food. The name of the restaurant is Dos Coyotes BORDER Cafe, as in the US-Mexico border, and thus, it is SOUTHWESTERN food. Its a whole different genre of food people, get over it. Stepping off my soap box, the food here is quite good for fast-fresh food. I usually get some variation of fish tacos or burrito, and they are always great. I've tried a few seasonal specials and those have also been tasty. The salsa bar has a nice selection, and the place is always pretty clean. The bf and I get the (sweet) Sante Fe nachos, without fail, every time. With/without chicken, it comes to $7/8. Then we share. And life is good. The bf is also a diehard fan of the Ranch Hand burrito, which is seasonal. According to him, best burrito ever. For me, not so much. There's cheese and sauce and lots of beans in that thing. This place is NOT Mexican food, but it IS delicious. I grew up in Davis and have been obsessed with Dos for as long as I can remember. I usually hate ordering the same things over and over, but here I've ordered the same three things all my life. From ages tiny to 13 it was the Southwest Veggie Burrito (no salsa or guac because I was weird little child). Since then I've either ordered the Border Chicken Burrito or the Adobe Salad with Chicken (dressing on the side cause this is one salad that doesn't need anything else). The salads are two meals easily and without the dressing they keep decently. The other items on the menu range from good to kinda weird. If you like burritos without beans, check out the Mahi Mahi burrito. Not my style, but my mom ordered it for years. Two warnings: 1) The Southwest Burritos with meat are pretty much entirely meat. The Border burrito is essentially the Southwest Veggie + Meat, so I'd go for that if you like beans and rice and all that good stuff in your burritos. 2) They make a looot of mistakes on orders. I can't count the number of times they've given my vegetarian parents carnitas burritos. If you order on the phone, make sure they repeat your order back to you correctly!
