I want to start by saying how sad I am to leave this review. Teds is the closest music store to my…read morehome and one I came to for years as a student. I consistantly ordered a particular brand of reeds from them during my middle and high school years and had two buffet clarinets serviced there while martriculating and preparing for collegiate auditions. This is why I trusted Ted's and brought the parent of one of my students here. We purchased his first professional clarinet, a used Buffet from here. While his parent was happy to buy a new professional clarinet, the quality and richness of older Buffet clarinets matched the beautiful tone my student achieves. Ted's gave us a good price and I played the clarinet briefly to make sure it was functional. They even offered a 6 month warranty. During lessons, my clarinet student started to have issues with one of the keys. I noticed some very small pieces of cork were missing. We took the clarinet back to Ted's and instead of picking up the clarinet, I had to send it back for a more complete fix (the pad was now not closing correctly). I was told they did an overhaul of the clarinet and after some time, we tried the clarinet and picked it up again. Because an overhaul was done, I visually inspected and tested the clarinet again. All seemed well. A few weeks ago, my student had to send his instrument to the repair shop for an overhaul after pads in the right hand joint became loose and fell off. This time, at a different store, we were notified there was no way an actual overhaul was done because of the condition of the pads. I can no longer recommend, nor do business with Ted's, which is really a shame after all of these years.

I was actually overwhelmed by the number of guitars and amps in stock. Literally thousands. What I thought would be a 10 min max, look around, buy a pack of strings (I always try and buy something at non chain music stores) turned into a 2 hour adventure. Rows and rows of guitars. I was at first intimidated and it took a bit to get my bearings as how the instruments were organized. LPs over here, Fenders over there. Did I mention there were "like 2 thousand guitars. Then I was shocked at how reasonable the prices were. After 45 minutes I had decided I was definitely getting a new guitar that day, then what to choose? Narrowed down between 2 that I wanted and matched what I could afford that day. The guy who rang me up, saw it was my first purchase there and knocked a few bucks off and threw in a new set of slinky strings. Look if you are looking for a posh music boutique store with fancy displays, this is not the place for you. But if you are a musician looking for quality gear that is priced right and huge inventory, this is the place. I am already planning my next visit with a bigger budget.

Bones Jones is more than a single weekly lesson. It's truly an education in music, a musical experience in which students not only learn to play, but learn to play with other students, to collaborate with other students and the excellent, excellent teachers, all accomplished band musicians themselves. I took guitar for several years growing up. Among many things missing was the opportunity to play with other musicians and students, the opportunity to begin to live that dream of playing in a band, of playing before live audiences. At Bones Jones, all that's taken care of -- it's part of their music culture there, and, in my estimation, that's invaluable. Thus, my son is completely turned on to electric guitar. Less than a year in, he's already seeing where it can take him, what the possibilities are, and his learning and growth has been really much, much faster than I'd have imagined -- besides practicing what he's being taught there at the Bones Jones schoolhouse, they've equipped him to explore on his own, to take advantage of the myriad resources out there, and he's doing it, and loving it. I can't say enough good things about Bones Jones Music. It's been a great investment for me and, more important, continues to be a great learning and music experience for my son. Rock on!

Billy continues to meet my son's music interests as they have evolved, keeping him interested, challenged and motivated. The whole community is welcoming and encouraging of any student at any level. If you love rock music from all eras, this is the place to learn guitar! I have to admit that I was skeptical at first about the group lesson model because everyone else teaches private guitar lessons. But the group class model really works! Billy is a super skilled teacher and you will love playing with other folks in classes. I highly recommend Bones Jones Music!

That all being said, I make sure to rush to Bill's when I need stuff because the alternative is going home and then going to...well, another store with an instrument in the name, and that has never been a good experience unlike Bill's. A few years ago I made an online purchase for a used pedal from Bill's. I showed up to get it and as it turns out, they had no idea where it was. They had spend an hour looking for it after I purchased it, and then they spend another 20 minutes looking for it after I arrived. To make it up to me they offered me a brand new version of the pedal at the mid point of the difference between the used one and the new one. I took that offer because it was a great deal. Since then I have bought 3 more pedals from them over the years, a microphone, and a whole lot of accessories. If I want to purchase another guitar at any point, I will definitely hit them up if possible.

The clear implication was that I was attempting to steal this little item. This young man clearly needs more education in reading people. I was pretty insulted and I will never have a need to return to Bills Music in Catonsville Md. There are numerous other places to purchase their product line without the rude, passive-aggressive treatment.

The internet is filled with many instructors with impressive credentials. What I noticed about Dave's website is that, unlike others who focused on what they know, Dave focused on how he would teach a student. There is that big, big difference between knowing something and teaching it, and Dave was focused on helping the student to learn. I have been with Dave for two years this month and am very happy with my choice. Yes, of course he knows how to play, and knows this intricacy of the fretboard and that intricacy of theory. But anyone teaching should know those things anyway. What I like about Dave, and why I highly recommend him, is that he is interested in getting me to play that way, and will go over a piece, or even a measure, as many times as necessary to get me there. Thankfully, he not only knows how to teach, but also possesses that most important attribute for someone in the field: the patience of Job.

Dave worked with me to help me learn how to read standard notation and tabs, get familiar with the fretboard, and begin developing as a guitar player. Dave's got an amazing depth of knowledge of styles and theory. He's helped me with flatpicking and fingerpicking styles, and I'm now able to play some rudimentary versions of Doc Watson and Rev. Gary Davis tunes. I want to emphasize that his help has allowed me to get there in just a year of playing--friends of mine who've been playing for years are surprised by my playing, and I give full credit to Dave. His greatest assets as a teacher, without a doubt, are his patience and encouragement. There's been hundreds of times when I've flubbed notes and chords over and over, and he's never once shown any frustration, but just said, "that's all right, take your time." He's passionate about the music he teaches, and that enthusiasm definitely inspires me to practice, practice, practice! Dave is friendly and knowledgeable, a calm and patient teacher, and an amazing guitar player. You won't regret picking Dave to teach you how to play!
