My son has been taking electric guitar lessons with the Bone Jones Music family since January 2019, and I'm totally impressed by their music culture and instruction methods. Bones Jones is more than a single weekly lesson. It's truly an education in music, a musical experience in which students not only learn to play, but learn to play with other students, to collaborate with other students and the excellent, excellent teachers, all accomplished band musicians themselves. I took guitar for several years growing up. Among many things missing was the opportunity to play with other musicians and students, the opportunity to begin to live that dream of playing in a band, of playing before live audiences. At Bones Jones, all that's taken care of -- it's part of their music culture there, and, in my estimation, that's invaluable. Thus, my son is completely turned on to electric guitar. Less than a year in, he's already seeing where it can take him, what the possibilities are, and his learning and growth has been really much, much faster than I'd have imagined -- besides practicing what he's being taught there at the Bones Jones schoolhouse, they've equipped him to explore on his own, to take advantage of the myriad resources out there, and he's doing it, and loving it. My son started playing Jack Johnson on acoustic at age 9 at Bones Jones Music and now 7 years of lessons later, he is playing Metallica and Muse on electric guitar. Billy continues to meet my son's music interests as they have evolved, keeping him interested, challenged and motivated. The whole community is welcoming and encouraging of any student at any level. If you love rock music from all eras, this is the place to learn guitar! I have to admit that I was skeptical at first about the group lesson model because everyone else teaches private guitar lessons. But the group class model really works! I can't say enough about our wonderful experience with Bones Jones. My high school aged son decided he wanted guitar lessons having never played any instruments before. He had two lessons in person and then Covid came onto the scene. Billy and his team quickly pivoted to a zoom format with added flexibility and instruction time. The format of the fun style of learning kept my son engaged, and more-so his connection with music and his new-found friends at Bones Jones helped him get through a lonely and difficult time of social distancing and virtual learning. I received guitar lessons from Billy for around 6+ months and it was truly a great experience. I have tried guitar lessons before with several other instructors and it always turned out to be a bad experience. The instructors were always very talented musicians, but their ability to teach was limited. Billy's experience studying at Berklee was apparent in his teaching methods and I learned more in a single one of his lessons than I ever did from any other instructor. He was also very flexible with his curriculum. I often become easily distracted when I don't find the subject matter very interesting, but Billy hand-crafted all of my lessons to fit my abilities to play and learn. Although I was only paying for one hour of lessons at a time; he must have also been putting a considerably more time into preparing the personalized lesson for each session. When I began playing harmonica, he incorporated that into my lessons too even though he did not have any experience playing harmonica in the past. It was always clear that he put more time and effort into his lessons than any of the other instructors I tried before, and for the first time I could say that guitar lessons were not a waste of money. My past instructors often started a session with no lesson plan and wasted my time and money "winging-it". Billy was always prepared and he always fit as much into the one-hour session as I could possibly learn. He also always provided me with sheets of songs and exercises to practice in between lessons. He also often recorded what we practiced and provided me with an MP3 of it for reference when I was practicing alone, and this proved to be a lifesaver for me on several occasions. Most surprising of all though is that his rates seemed to be very competitive with all of the other teachers in the area, and he offered discounts when I was able to pre-pay for the month. If you're looking for guitar lessons then Billy is hands down the only instructor who I can recommend. I have nothing but positive things to say about Billy. I recently received a guitar this year and did not know how to play. I received three lessons from Billy to begin. The first lesson he made it fun and interesting. He was also VERY patient and allowed me to trip over and over again on the same note. He was able to take some of my favorite songs from The WHO, Social Distortion, Pearl Jam, etc. and break them down to slow easy notes that I could play. I can't say enough good things about the quality of the lessons here. The faculty/staff are top-notch and it's a really supportive community of students. We also laugh together quite a bit. The studio has really responded intelligently and thoughtfully to the challenges of COVID-19 and we now do all of our lessons via Zoom or with socially-distanced and masked in-person lessons. I take a variety of guitar and bass classes and they are great. Also, Billy, Jeff, and the other instructors are clearly great with kids and teens (I personally am an adult according to most). It had been many years (25+) since I had played an instrument. I decided I needed a hobby, so I won't out and bought a guitar. I had only played piano and brass instruments in High School, so this was very new to me. I tried teaching myself at home with videos and apps. I learned a little, but wasn't progressing the way I hoped I would. I have now been taking lessons for about six weeks from Billy and I can't believe how much I have learned! I found out about Bones Jones Music while doing a Yelp search for local music schools with good reviews. Being around the corner from my house and having a 5-star review track record, I decided to call and find out more. Within a few hours I received an email from Billy Jones (the owner) about setting up an initial consultation. Little background info about me...I am a 28 year-old working mother of two who has always been passionate about music but had never actually picked up an instrument before, so I was a little intimidated by the idea of walking into a music school with no prior experience. I wasn't even sure what instrument I really wanted to play! Anyhow...as soon as I walked in the door of the studio, I was greeted by Billy who's friendly, laid-back demeanor made me feel immediately more comfortable. We sat down right away and discussed my past experience, what genres of music I listen to and am interested in playing, which instrument I was interested in (since I didn't know he let me try out a couple), and what my goals were. I went in thinking I wanted to play piano, and left realizing that guitar might be a better fit for me so right then and there he began teaching me some of the chords to one of the songs I wanted to learn. Holding a guitar was a little awkward at first but by the time I left his studio, I already knew the chords to my first song. I was so excited that I went out and bought a guitar that same evening so I could start practicing. I have now been taking lessons at Bones Jones once a week for the past 5 months and have learned more chords than I can count and can play over a dozen songs. I don't have any other guitar lesson experiences to compare this to but I have to say that for me, I love that each lesson is custom tailored to my musical interests and comfort level. For example, if I know I have a super busy work week coming up, Billy will introduce a song on my list that has less complicated chords. On weeks where I'm ready to take on a big new song, he's got it ready to go when I walk in the door. There have been lessons where I've requested learning a weird song that he's never heard of before and he can find it on YouTube, pick out the chords and type up some sheet music for me on the spot. From my personal experience, Billy really takes the time to get to know his students and their strengths and musical interests and uses that to keep them motivated. After years of wishing I could play an instrument I finally made the decision to take guitar lessons. Bones Jones Music was close to my house and had received good Yelp reviews so I decide to check them out. After my initial session with Billy I was eager to get started, and I still didn't own a guitar. Billy gave me some recommendation as to what type of guitar I should start with and what brands were best for beginners. As far as teaching someone how to play the guitar, Billy is fantastic. A lot of people may be able to play an instrument well, but that's doesn't necessary mean they can teach someone else how to play. Billy can teach you how to play. He has a great ear for music but also a great eye to see what you are doing right and wrong and he knows how to fix little mistake that may keep you from playing correctly. After every session I come away with tips or techniques to practice that help me keep improving. Billy puts together great lesson plans that focus on learning the fundamentals but also gets you working on songs right away. He is very patient but also gives you just enough new material to keep you challenged. Billy is a real chill, down to earth guy with an insane knowledge of music. This review comes long overdue, but here it is! Billy is a spectacularly gifted teacher. I myself have taken eight lessons from him; I've learned a lot from each of them and enjoyed them each thoroughly. I came to Billy with basically zero knowledge on music theory and very minimal self-taught skills in how to play the guitar (which I'd forgotten over time). Throughout the weeks, he was very involved in the structure of the lesson plans. He started the first lesson off by inquiring in the artists that I was interested or inspired by and then went from there. Whenever interest took me in another direction, Billy would gladly give help in that direction. Where Billy had less expertise, he would do research first and then create a lesson plan (Take this with a grain of salt. I'm not saying that Billy doesn't know his stuff. What I'm saying is that he's humble enough to recognize when he should say he simply doesn't know; adding to that, he is hardworking enough to go do the research for you). He was very encouraging and willing to help with tough spots, agreeably slowing down or speeding up the lesson depending on my proficiency and how much I'd practiced throughout the week. That being said, make sure you practice! Instruction is pointless otherwise! Another added point is that Billy was very willing to adjust schedules as needed and (I'm ashamed to admit that I was watching the clock) was willing to teach longer than he was obligated to on some days. If the above is not convincing enough, I haven't been taking classes from Billy in almost four weeks and he's still e-mailing me weekly-biweekly guitar lessons, tips, and practice guides.
