What I thought would be a 10 min max, look around, buy a pack of strings (I always try and buy something at non chain music stores) turned into a 2 hour adventure. Rows and rows of guitars. I was at first intimidated and it took a bit to get my bearings as how the instruments were organized. LPs over here, Fenders over there. Did I mention there were "like 2 thousand guitars. Then I was shocked at how reasonable the prices were. After 45 minutes I had decided I was definitely getting a new guitar that day, then what to choose? Narrowed down between 2 that I wanted and matched what I could afford that day. The guy who rang me up, saw it was my first purchase there and knocked a few bucks off and threw in a new set of slinky strings. Look if you are looking for a posh music boutique store with fancy displays, this is not the place for you. This place rocks! I visited this store upon the recommendation of friend a few weeks ago. I was looking for a hard case for my guitar and I didn't want to spend a great deal of money. The customer service is incredible. As soon as you walk in staff greets you. They are extremely knowledgeable, patient, helpful, and down to earth. I wish I had discovered this store sooner because Bill's Music in Catonsville sucks. I had the worst experience buying my guitar from Bill's Music and taking piano lesions. Had I known about Atomic, I would've spent my money here. I highly recommend Atomic Music. The prices are great and you can do trades. An incredible place for used guitars and amplifiers. This place only sells used gear including a good amount of vintage gear. Ever wondered what a 70s Fender Strat or Gibson Les Paul sounds like vs an 80s, 90s, or modern version? This is the place for you to find out! The store is large and packed with gear. They are fair on the prices also. I ended up getting a wonderful Fender Strat after spending 3 hours comparing multiple models. One really cool thing is that they say they will buy back anything you purchase at 70% of the cost that you bought it for. So this is a really cool way of owning a guitar or amp for a couple years and trading it in to experience something new. It's like the cheapest rental for high end gear that you can find! Such a fun and unique place. Come check it out for sure. I've been buying and selling gear at Atomic Music for 10+ years. The staff is extremely knowledgeable, friendly and completely reasonable. I usually walk in intending to sell my guitar/amp/whatever for cash and end up walking away with a different guitar/amp/whatever. They're always willing to work with you and get you the best deal possible, whether you're buying or selling. I've had a couple experiences where I wanted to sell them a piece of gear but they already had one in stock or knew they wouldn't be able to give me a reasonable price. They were always extremely above-board in cases like this and would kindly and honestly tell me that I would be better off selling it on my own rather than offering an offensive low-ball price. I want to support local music stores, and their move from the industrial building south of Costco to the Old Circuit City building North of Costco (behind Old Line) did improve the store experience, and they'll buy your old music stuff for a decent price. But each time I go in to get a cable, picks, or other musical accoutrements, they guys behind the counter do this little play: Employee #1: Someone helped you out, man? Me: Nope, just need to buy some strings, 2 sets of Martin Lights. (sounds like cigarettes, but trust me, those are real strings) Employee #1: Sure, man, let me get those for you (starts ringing me up) Employee #2: Hey, let's give those to him for $10, OK. He looks like a good guy. (nods head at me) Me: Oh thanks! The first time, I was like "Wow, these guys are so nice!" The second time, I was like "That was weird, that happened last time too!" And then the third time, I was like "OK, how much are these strings? Why aren't the prices posted? Why don't they recognize me? Or should I just pretend to be lost each time and maybe they will give me this good guy discount forever!" Anyways, I'll still go back just to spite Guitar Center, and you could get a pretty nice used guitar/amp here, or have your guitar/amp repaired. read more

The used car dealership of music instruments. They have mostly junk, but every now and again they get something good. If you can save your receipt they will buy stuff back from you at 70% of what you paid. They negotiate! I'd rather give them my business than places like guitar center, which I'd give a 1-star. Here are some tips to shopping here: 1. Never buy, sell, or trade on a Sunday. Only the peons work on Sundays and they don't have the ability to negotiate as much as a manager or owner. If I only shopped here on Sundays I'd give them a 1-star review. 2. Unless the price is ridiculously low, never buy something the first time you see it. Ask them for the lowest price and remember what they say. Come back a few weeks or a month later and they are likely to go lower. If it sold in the mean time, don't fret (pun!), they are likely to get something similar or identical again in the near future. The buyer might even sell the thing back to them.... 3. The more regular of a customer you are, the better deals you get. 4. The more you package together, the better the deal. read more

I've always been pretty intimidated by big music stores - rushed, overwhelmed by the incessant playing of death metal of random guitar players around me, and disinterested employees. While they still have some of the incessant metal riffs, everything else about Atomic is awesome - knowledgeable, helpful staff who don't mind spending a few hours showing you the ins and outs of some of their gear. I spent a few hours there a few weeks ago and completely overhauled my amp/effects setup - and didn't break the bank. There was a slight issue with my amp, but they are fixing it for free and their tech, Johannes, has been great about communicating with me during the process.
