I needed to get my cello tuned (tried doing it myself but my C-string was being finicky and I was weary of dealing with the pegs), so I called to confirm they had someone that could tune my cello and they said yes. Staff was so nice, and I ending up buying a tuner for my cello as I needed one and wanted to support the shop. Location is great: pretty neighborhood and right by a cafe. My 12 year old daughter is a beginner violinist. We were visiting Washington DC from Barcelona, and wanted to have a string repaired on her violin. These tasks were completed and we were grateful for the speed of service and cost of the repair (sub $10). Additionally, I signed my daughter up for a private lesson, in order for her to improve her violin techniques and to just get some general practice during the summer. She was excited for it and she went into the lesson with a positive attitude. The lesson was informative, however the instructor made a comment that was not well received. Lindy at Music on the Hill addressed the situation, and offered a complementary class with a different instructor. I would send my daughter back to Music on the Hill again. read more

The owner of this business, Lindy, is extremely rude to customers. She "doesn't remember conversations" that she has "hundreds of times a day" and makes sure to remind you that it is your fault if things you discuss with her are not done. You, the customer, are responsible for putting them in writing for her to remember whether she told you to or not. She is inconsistent and unclear with policies regarding lessons. It is a shame to not be able to support a local business in my neighborhood, especially because my experience with my piano teacher has been great but the interactions with Lindy are not worth it. read more

"Say no more...I kno exactly what you're looking for" Lindy and Jane....what lovely human beings. My sister and I popped into this little guitar gin joint to purchase ourselves a couple of guitars. Let me preface....I played the violin for 13 years, and my sister for double that ....but as far as guitars....we knew NOTHING about them. We both knew enough from playing violins for years and high quality violins at that....that we really valued the sound quality of our instruments. We knew we wanted all wood guitars. We also knew that we were drawn to warm, buttery tones....we also are two short women....my sister is a half pint, haha....so we needed instruments that felt comfortable in our arms. Lindy plopped right on down and played ....repeatedly bc we were intently listening ... A handful of guitars for us. She was very knowledgeable, very clear in her explanations and Jane as well chimed in several times with her own wisdom, and opinions which I really appreciated. She never talked down to us. She was incredibly conscious of our budgets. She was frank and honest with us about the accoutrements we would need to put hade. And one of the guitars we bought had a bit of a nick....and so she gave us some coins off. Their prices are competitive with what you'll find online...so why not stop in and support a beautiful local business. I loved them ... And I'm grateful that my first gutar came from them. (Ps....kinda badass that the day I went in, it was two women running the shop....which meant...complete empathy when talking about small hands, boobs that get in the way, and how a guitar fits into the frame of our bodies...amen. Came in the store unsure if the guitar I had purchased online was a suitable guitar for beginners.. After an extremely thoughtful and honest conversation with Sophie and Luke (owner) I was able to weigh the pros and cons and left with a rental guitar (50$ for 8 weeks) to see if I should continue on my path to 'greatness'. What a great idea to introduce aspiring musicians to give it a try! A wonderful personalized and genuine approach from this gem of a store, a true pleasure that is much needed in the music world. 5 stars! These guys were great! read more

Honestly, they saved my Christmas. My parents just moved to Virginia after hurricane Maria hit our home in Puerto Rico. They had to leave everything behind, including my father's guitar. He loved his guitar and played it next to the Christmas tree every year while we all sat around singing villancicos. I was determined to make this first Christmas seem relatively "normal." I emailed the store explaining my situation and within minutes I received a response! I ran straight to Music on the Hill after work and held the Cordoba C5 in my hands and just knew it was perfect. The lovely ladies working that night (who's names I didn't get, but I wish I did) were so helpful and kind to me! I don't know much about music, but they treated me so well! As you can see from the pictures, my father was extremely happy (he even cried- and he's not a crier!). These people really care about quality outcomes. To such an extent that I have seen the owner tell a parent that her child could not continue in a group class because he just wasn't interested/playing. It suggested to me a massive amount of integrity. They have always been able to work with us in a way that has always made me feel that she has had our child's best interest at heart, with thoughtful suggestions that we haven't received elsewhere. This is a wonderful store. When I bought an instrument for my very young son, the clerk there was knowledgeable and helped me make an age-appropriate selection. When later the instrument had an issue, the store owner diagnosed the issue and immediately exchanged it for me. It was a totally lovely and positive experience. Looking forward to trying the classes and camps they offer and to many years of supporting this small Hill business. This is my favorite music store! The owners are very knowledgeable and helpful, without being overbearing. They have also been extremely patient with me as I've been unable to decide on an instrument and ended up making a couple of exchanges (though I don't recommend following my indecisive lead). The (free!) weekly bluegrass jam sessions are what initially drew me to the store. Few--if any--stores in the area provide this service. Phillips, who leads the sessions, is an incredible musician and instructor and helps to create a fun, motivating atmosphere. And if you're not into bluegrass, don't be discouraged--he's open to any song suggestions, really! Lastly, I love that they have a wide selection of Seagull products (guitars, mandolins, the dulcimer-like Merlin). Seagull manufactures beautiful, high quality--yet affordable--instruments that are all made in Canada. (I feel like a spokesperson, but really just a fan of awesome instruments made in humane working conditions.) read more

I participated in small group guitar lessons of which I have no complaints. Unfortunately, I had a death in the family and was unable to attend the final lesson. I was aware of the terms of my pre-paid classes and knew there was no make up. However, during the second to last class, my instructor informed us that he would provide sheet music for us to continue our education at home and learn a song we could play as a sort of graduation. As I had already paid for this music (included in my original fee), I called to ask about picking it up when I returned to town following the funeral. I was told that it would be no problem for me to pick up the music the following Monday. I called on Monday and it was as if that previous conversation never occurred. I was told I would receive a follow up call when the music was ready, and received no such call. I called again...and again...and again (and spoke to the same lady). Each time I was told I would receive a call back. After two weeks of this, I finally went to the location and spoke to the same lady. This time she was honest (it is hard to give someone the run around when they are standing right in front of you) and said, " Yeah, I asked him (the instructor) about it and he just didn't do it. It's not like I can make him. Sorry." How about would you like an additional class, a credit, other sheet music, a number to reach out to him? Just sorry you missed your class, but it's done now so too bad is unacceptable costumer service. The sheet music is the best way to continue to use the skills you learned, lest you forget them. It is a shame that this location missed out on the opportunity for a longstanding relationship with me (additional lessons) and positive word of mouth reviews because of laziness and poor communication. read more

The staff are friendly and informative and evidently have a passion for music, instruments, and education. They were helpful and patient when helping our son to decide which instrument to pursue, and explained all our different options for buying instruments and organising lessons. nice locally owned store with lots of Seagull and Eastman Acoustic Guitars. Seagull guitars are made in Seattle and have a nice tone. I am not a fan of non-American made guitars, but Eastman does offer some guitars with tonewoods that cost less than Martins and gibsons. Greeat selection of beginner instruments and books. I am pretty well stocked but I got a new Mando strap, paid 29 and online the price was 34 so I got a bargin. Whoopee. Store is clean and pleasant and the owners know what they are talking about. I wish I had taken the time to try one of those Seagull guitars. oh well. read more
