There are several things you need to know about this place:…read more 1) Parking is on the streets nearby and some meters allow one hour while some allow two. These are the old-fashioned meters so bring lots of quarters! 2) The website references teacherS (plural) but only provides a bio for one (and no pic). 3) It is MANDATORY for a parent (or guardian) to be with their child for the duration of the music lesson (1-1.5 hr depending on level). Note: unless you have been a kindergarden teacher, it may be disconcerting to hear 30 different kids banging cymbals, toy drum sticks and other "musical instruments" all at (or close to) the same time! 3) The teacher is a Brazilian woman who has traveled extensively, studied and taught music for much of her life. She is great with small kids (1-4 yr old) but in the 5-10 yr old group it's a different story: She has a VERY LOUD voice and sings the notes at the top of her lung capacity as she plays them on the piano (C C D D E E E E!!!!). The children follow along by playing the corresponding notes on their (individual) keyboards. Unfortunately, and w/o any warning, the teacher will keep singing her notes but then EXPECT the children to play something different (ie. melody or "accompinament" as she calls it).....BUT w/o giving any instruction to do so! 4) Class times are "approximate" since I've been told 3 different start times, none of which were accurate! 5) The cost is $15 for about 1/2 hr. of group piano instruction (beginner level) and is sold in a package of $225 for 9 lessons.

We participated in the 3- to 5-year-old intro to piano class as offered through the county rec…read moredepartment, and it was fine. A little over half the class was learning the parts of songs (notes, beat, etc.) and using different devices (balls, shakers, and even stick horses) to play while sticking to the rhythm or beat. The other 1/3 of the class was learning notes on the keyboard. Our teacher was patient and kind with the little kids, though lack of parent interest and ability to keep the kids on task made the whole class a bit chaotic. The school was founded by Mrs. Dourado, and she runs classes along with her adult children. Parking nearby is on-street or in a municipal garage about a block away. I can't comment on the merits of instruction for older children, but the program is a good introduction to music instruction for preschoolers.

He does a great job of teaching both the physical aspect of playing the piano and the musical aspect of each piece. His studio is a wonderful community to be a part of. His students come from a diverse set of backgrounds and professions, and Matthew highly encourages the social aspect of music. He is a great person, and I look forward to my lesson with him each week. I have absolutely no doubt that he is the best piano teacher in the DMV, and I highly recommend him.

Where the other teachers focused on teaching how to play individual pieces, Matthew teaches how to play the piano. With a rigorous focus on developing proper technique and an understanding of the music, I am learning the skills that will truly enable me to play to my potential. He is a masterful diagnostician, focusing in on the student's individual needs and providing targeted exercises to overcome each challenge and promote growth and progress. I have come to piano later in life, with little prior experience. I feared my inexperience and age would be a barrier, but nothing could be further than the truth. Matthew has made me feel as welcome and valued as his most proficient students. If this all was not enough, Matthew composes very beautiful music of his own, that as his students we get to listen to, as well as learn and play. It is a really special experience. Studio V is not just a place to come for piano lessons, though. It is a place to join an expansive and welcoming community of people that share a love of music. I cannot recommend Matthew and Studio V highly enough.

He is fun, patient, inventive, supportive and more gifted, as both a teacher and a musician, than I will ever be able to appreciate. To my son, in turn, Piotr is incredibly cool and simply awesome. He knows that Piotr is a classical guitarist who grew up playing blistering rock and roll, and to hear the two of them rock out on whatever song suits my son's fancy at the moment -- or whatever song Piotr thinks is a good challenge -- delights this mom to no end. And then to hear my son noodling around on guitar in his spare time -- a hobby that brings him great joy -- well, let's just say that it's nice to never have to pester him to practice. I'm endlessly grateful to have such a huge talent working one-on-one with my son, and I look forward to seeing my son continue to evolve as a musician and expand his musical horizons -- no doubt eventually beyond rock. Thanks, Piotr!

After 6 months of lessons, she was selected to sing a solo in her school's talent show in front of a large audience. It was great to see that progress. He is knowledgeable and experienced in the Russian approach to piano instruction. The kids are receptive to his teaching and reinforcement. Jeff is patient and understanding, and willing to accommodate each student's individual pace of learning and specific musical interests. Jeff hosts two recitals per year and it's always inspiring to see how all of his students have grown since the previous recital. He also fully prepares our children for the standardized music theory tests - he is knowledgeable of the material and keeps up to date on the changes to the tests throughout the years. Jeff is always prompt for our weekday evening lessons and accommodating when we ask him to flex the schedule in advance--which is important to us since we have hectic activity schedules. Not only have my kids learned about playing the piano, but they have also learned about discipline, hard work, and musical appreciation through this experience.

My piano teacher has a magic piano bench. It's comfortable, lightweight, and easily adjustable…read more Everyone who sits on it loves it and asks about it. While I have a beautiful restored Yamaha grand piano that is everything I want at the moment, the piano bench that I have is terrible. The cushion sinks down after a couple hours and you literally have back pain after your practice session. After several lessons, I finally ask him where he bought this magical piano bench and it turns out it's this local piano store in Maryland called Piano Craft. After several months of painful practice sessions, I finally decide to call Piano Craft and inquire about a new piano bench. I called and left my number and information with the secretary and waited. And waited. A week later, I finally decided to call back and talk to the secretary again. This time, later that same day, a salesperson called me and asked me about the bench. She was actually very helpful and texted me pictures showing me the types of piano benches they had and we finally found my teacher's magic bench! She said that she would get pricing and other info to me later. Apparently "later" means never at Piano Craft so a month later, as a treat to myself, I end up ordering the finest piano bench money can buy from another store. My new Jansen piano bench never sinks down and can take all my practicing! I'm shocked that this place actually has good reviews. If you're a working musician, piano teacher, or busy person that has time deadlines, I cannot recommend them. I'm a person who likes testing out new places with a smaller purchase if I can. If this is they way they handle a simple piano bench request, I can't imagine purchasing a grand piano from them. I've been told they have a nice selection of pianos. I'm sure that's probably true, but this pianist will take her business elsewhere.
