Love speakeasies so had to give this place a try. As usual, I get confused when finding the entrance. The door looked like it was the front of an abandoned space, but just ring the doorbell and be transported to an elegant bar. The space has booths, tables, and bar seats. They just started a new "theme" to the bar that will change very 4 months. They choose a different city and incorporate drinks from there and put their own twist on them. The first, and current, city is New Orleans. The menu is well thought out, but if you don't see a cocktail you like, they are willing to make drinks not listed on the menu too. We arrived a few minutes after they opened and were seated right away (didn't make reservations). Not sure if it was because they just opened, but it seemed like we were forgotten. No one came back to us so after about 5 or 10 minutes, I went up to the bar. One of the workers seemed generally apologetic about not waiting on us right away. He brought over menus and some olives and bar mix and water. The wait for someone to return to get our drink orders was another 10 minutes or so. And then the wait for our drinks was at least another 10 minutes. Overall, a nice location with great tasting cocktails. But with limited time to spend in the city, I don't know if I would recommend for someone traveling through. read more

All other senses aside, you can often tell how good a cocktail will be simply by the sound of the shake. These shakes were exceptional. The cat has been let out of the bag for Door 74, and what originally was a phone-in-only system (the address only to be given upon confirmation of your reservation) was packed with, well, tourists like me. This is something I could tell that Door 74 had as much, if not more, of a problem with than I did, as their 'no standing, no hitting on other guests, no loud obnoxious people' was certainly compromised by the Friday night clientele. But those shakes... they give me hope. When I come back, I'll make these slight changes to my strategy: -I'll only go after midnight or 1am as my Amsterdam guru recommended. -Perhaps a Tuesday/Wednesday drinking session is in order? -I will absolutely order off menu as the selected drinks were preferred by the sweet-toothed, umbrella inclined. (Otherwise known as 'Jonny-cocktails'.) These savvy, sophisticated bartenders had the ingredients, skill and talent to pour out some of Europe's finest - this was clear upon first shake. I stopped over to Door 74 about a week ago with some visitors from out of town. I made reservations like a good patron should, however we decided on a time that was too early - 8pm; it was empty. We need to try later next time. The inside is pretty dark and cozy / lots of black leather. I thought the drink menu had some good options - you could get punches for several people (which we didn't). Out drinks were good, but not the best cocktails I've ever had... and at about €15 per cocktail, they better be that good. Ill come back, but only for a drink or two. Just not blown away. read more

In New York, I've fallen into the habit of treating myself to exceptionally well made drinks via speakeasies, so naturally when I came to Amsterdam I just had to check out #29 of the 50 best cocktail bars in the world (Drinks International 2011 edition.) Yes, you should make a reservation. I was able to make a reservation for 11 PM, and I called early in the evening that same day. We did go on a Thursday, perhaps that's why it was easy? However, we did have to share a small table with another couple. I didn't mind it, though. If you remember the pictures of the Yelp reviews, you'll have no problem finding this place. I simply walked up to the door, rang the bell, and voila, a man appears and lets us in! Talk about totally stunning my fiancé with my badassery! The inside is dimly lit and reminiscent of my favorite speakeasies in New York. The crowd is sexy and the music is lounge-y. An overall trendy feel. For drinks, we ordered the peanut butter jelly (aptly garnished with a peanut in its shell) and the Hopscotch to Holland. I preferred the PBJ. As for technique, I noticed the bartender lighting the rind of an orange and rubbing it on the rim of a glass- I couldn't help but wonder if that gave the drink a more smokey, orange taste. Wow. All I can say. I am an old soul, speak easy lounge seeking guy. If I hear of one in any city I visit, I must go. You must be invited or have a password which you get by calling them. They maintain a good vibe and not allow to get overcrowded and maintain their drink manifestation to be on queue. It is not a place for the person that wants to have a beer. Or the person who wants a gin and tonic. This for the person who is open minded to ask the bartenders/artists to make you a masterpiece. They will blow your mind with their creations. You will savour flavors that will hit your senses and taste buds like no other. Have you ever wished that you could go back in time to before you watched the best series ever (Breaking Bad comes to mind...), just so you can be your virgin self again and experience it for the first time? Yep - that's how I feel about Door 74. I went probably about 3 years ago and it was one of the coolest places ever - the ambiance, the service, the music, the drinks, the having to wait for them to call you back to see if you got a reservation...my more recent visit didn't fare so well. Firstly, the tattooed lady at the door was LOVELY. She was super enthusiastic, super friendly and super helpful. Couldn't say enough good things about her. Our table server was ok. We had to go up to the bar a number of times on our own but he was nice enough. All in all we had 2 cocktails each (8 in total). Of those, I'd say 3-4 were pretty good. I actually had to take one back because it literally tasted like raw cake batter, WITHOUT the sugar. To their credit, I wasn't charged for this drink. It seems a bit of flash over substance - 10 ingredients in a drink does not necessarily a good drink make... The other sticking point for the night was the fact that the soundtrack was pure Leidseplein. I like a little guilty pleasure now and again...I like to "He HEEEEEE" as much as any fun-loving Michael Jackson impersonator but not at a place like Door 74. With the rise of the 'speakeasy' style bar in Amsterdam competition is stiffer. Reinvent or stay the original course - just don't try to do both. We were looking for a late bar during our visit to Amsterdam. This place came highly recommended on Yelp, so we went to search it out. Its very well hidden, we only found it as a result of the stern note pinned to the doorbell next door telling ppl not to ring it! They could use a discreet number '74' above their own doorbell so as not to piss off the neighbours. Once we were inside I was surprised at how small it was, the booths seemed very self contained so once you were sitting in them, your only view was of the (very well stocked) bar. I love people watching in bars, so wasn't that keen on the seating arrangements, it deadened the atmosphere a bit. The cocktails are expensive, much more expensive than overpriced Dublin, or any i've had in London! My 'Mrs Miller' cocktail was delicious certainly, but not €14 worth of deliciousness. The music playing in the background really did not fit in with the 'Speakeasy' vibe at all, a lot of music from the 90s or pop tunes from a few years back. As I understand it, its one of the first Speakeasy type bars in The Netherlands, likely due to the popularity of such places in the UK & the USA (we have a handful in Dublin too). There are admirable quirky touches, like the drinks menu on a games board, but the little things like the music and the mood need some further refining and polish. And ouch! The prices!! read more

Unlike the name suggests, there is no "74" on the door. Door 74 is actually located just to the right of a door numbered "74 1/2". Just ring the buzzer and if you have a reservation, or if you get there early, you'll be allowed to enter. The service here is topnotch for anywhere, especially the Netherlands though, and it starts right at the door where an employee offers to hang your coat and stow any bags you may be carrying. There is a menu but I didn't bother with it, just tell the bartender what you're in the mood for and allow him to work his magic. I had four drinks in total and each was completely different and excellent in it's own way. As I drink my taste changes and Timo, the bartender kept up with me to perfection. I think the hype is over and they want to pretend that they are still a happening bar but treat your future guests with more respect and do not say when we're in front of the door that if we did not respond you do not have a reservation and then you basically can either wait for an hour and a half or .... Visiting Amsterdam for the first time, I'm glad my friend took to me to this place. It's a cute speakeasy spot right in the city. Great pre or post dinner drinks and to catch up with friends. I like the fact they take reservations because you know then the place won't be crowded or overpacked. We were one of the first people there on a Saturday night so the service was great and the bartenders and staff were really helpful on deciding a drink. Although I love acting like a bro and drinking beer like water in Amsterdam, I needed to hop away from the hops for a night. Enter Door 74 (make sure it's the right one). It wasn't too busy on a Tuesday at midnight, which worked out because we got a lot of face time with Jim, one of the newer (but equally awesome) bartenders. He made me a spicy drink with lemongrass infused gin and of course, I had to try their drink of the day, which is always the most popular because it is a unique concoction made by a staff member, only available that day. Me: "Did you light the rosemary garnish from the drink of the day on fire so that I would get some roasted rosemary scents on the nose?" Jim: "Nah, it just looks cool." read more

I almost rang the wrong doorbell to get in, but some random passerby told me which one was the right one. Be careful! The Dutch are the best, so they probably wouldn't mind anyway. Need to make a reservation for weekend nights. You can whatsapp their number to do so, and they'll whatsapp you back to confirm. The space is very small, so not much to enjoy in terms of decor. At least we were seated in the front and felt like there was no room to get up and stretch. The drinks were unique and fun. The disappointing part was they had a limited menu of maybe eight signature cocktails...whereas I expect most speakeasies to be able to concoct you a drink based on the tastes and liqueurs you like. The perk was the free olives and snacks to munch on :) Cocktails were €15 each. And I didn't like the taste of mine (the one with mangosteen juice, forget the name), unfortunately, which probably also colored the rest of my review. This place is simply amazing - make sure you call early and get a "reservation". Have the hotel do it for you if you are visiting. Bartenders are very friendly. They taste test every drink. The largest collection of bitters that I have ever seen. The drink list is very cool - and generally new every month; the bartenders pride themselves on creating very novel mixes. Be sure to check out their quotes in the menu. They are open 7 days/week - note that some website suggest that they are closed on Monday (untrue). I'm a huge fan of speakeasies and this one was definitely a new favorite. The bar tenders were incredibly friendly and accommodating, helping my date and I find the perfect drink to our tastes. The secret speakeasy is hidden in the alley with no visible sign only the street address. From the decor to the drinks, Door 74 exceeded my expectations. Very expensive drinks. You'll easily pay 15€ for a cocktail, or 5€ for a Heineken. You're paying for the atmosphere & novelty of a "speakeasy", though. I came with 6 other girls and I.T was so loud that we could hardly talk to each other. The doorman insisted we hang out coats on the coat rack. When we were leaving, one of my friends' coat & scarf were missing. The doorman apologized profusely, and gave my friend a coat from the lost & found. He later called my friend and told her he had found the coat -- he saw a girl walking down the street wearing I.T and he went through the effort of getting I.T back. Scarf was not found, but they reimbursed her for the cost of the scarf. Very good customer service. Won't come back through -- pricey drinks & cant hear myself think. read more

As one of the first "new" speakeasies, Door 74 has made a huge impact in Amsterdam, raising the bar for cocktails and gaining international accolades and awards. Fast-forward several years, Door 74 is still doing things right, and when in Amsterdam, you should definitely schedule a visit. The reservation system is a little different - call or text the morning of the day you would like to visit, but sure enough, I received a positive reply in the afternoon. The space is well-done, but not spectacular. And while they do not have the widest selection of spirits and liqeurs, they do very amazing things with what they have. After giving the server a description of what I liked, I was pleasantly surprised with a Martinez made with corenwyn, which was a brilliant way to start off the night before moving on to heavier drinks. The rye old fashioned was also perfect - not too sweet - and the couple of drinks I tried from their menu wheel were solid. The place was packed as I was there on a Saturday night, so if you prefer a more quiet experience, try a weeknight. But even when it is packed out, the service is great, the drinks are among the best in the world, and Door 74 rightfully claims its spot as one of the best cocktail bars in the world. read more

Amazing drinks, lovely atmosphere, highly recommend. You have to make a reservation by phone earlier in the day - not sure how difficult it is to get a reservation on the weekend, we went on a Monday. The place wasn't over-crowded at all, and we really liked that we were able to have a conversation without screaming into each other's ears, the usual circumstance in just about any other bar. The place is dimly-lit, the bar itself is a pretty, glowing fixture, and the soundtrack is comprised of feel-good doo-wop oldies. The cocktail menu is extensive, and if you don't see anything you like, they can create something different for you. The drinks are very artistically made and not at all conservative on the alcohol - very strong indeed! They come with lovely garnishes, some including edible flowers. They keep you scrupulously well-supplied with water and bar nibbles, thanks to which none of our group had hangovers the next day (the reinforcements also made it possible for us to drink more!). Warning about the cocktails with chili pepper in them: these are seriously spicy, proceed with caution! Cari, the member of staff who took care of us, absolutely charmed our pants off. Whatever they pay her, it isn't enough. She kept a close eye on our drinks and water, made really good drink recommendations, was extremely knowledgeable about cocktails in general, and discouraged us from ordering things that we weren't likely to enjoy (nice not to get the hard sell on every possible thing!). The door is easy to overlook, and the residents in the tenement next door have a sign up requesting that you please not ring their bell by mistake (they probably get this a lot), so mind the location! There's a door bell on the left side of the door. They also take Visa cards, which is a nice break for those from outside the Netherlands who often have to trawl the city for an ATM because almost no one accepts Visa. Be prepared to spend some money - the drinks are about €13-15 each. They ask that you not use cell phones inside and they have a rule against guests harassing/hitting on each other, which makes the place feel classier and more pleasant. The dress code is pretty flexible - you don't need to dress up to go in - but it's a bit more fun and atmospheric if you do. Overall, A+, will definitely go back the next time I'm in Amsterdam. read more
