We were visiting San Antonio and somehow got lucky enough to find Donut Palace, and honestly, these are the best donuts we have ever had by far. Everything is perfectly fresh and you can tell there is real pride behind what they make. The owner could not have been kinder, and after our first stop we ended up coming back almost every day. I picked up a box of the Jumbo sausage and cheese kolaches from the Donut Palace this past weekend for my family and I to enjoy! The staff was very friendly and were quick to help me with my order. Additionally, I loved how doughy the bread surrounding the sausage was! For some, the bread may be a bit underdone, but I thought it was perfect. The sausage inside was flavorful and not spicy which I liked and there was also a reasonable amount of cheese. I would definitely pick up kolaches from here again and will try the donuts next time! read more

I had heard from the San Antonio Restaurant Facebook Page about the birthday donuts from Donut Palace. I have a friend graduating with her master's in a few weeks and I wanted to get her a Happy Grad Day message. I called yesterday and spoke to V about the order and set for pick up time at 9am today. Today, I headed over early and realized quickly that they made these donuts fresh to order so they weren't ready yet. It takes 30 to 40 minutes to make. I had a sausage and cheese kolache and iced coffee with half and half while I waited. The iced coffee tasted like Vietnamese coffee...yum! I also ordered a ham and cheese kolache for Dad which he enjoyed for lunch. The custom donuts turned out great and my friend said they tasted good. I noticed their dozen prices seemed reasonable too. I called and made an order for 2 of the Happy Birthday donuts, and mixed dozen donuts to take to my sons school. They were made fresh, they were so adorable and they were a hit with the kids. Get here early! We were driving down the road and saw the "open" sign. We were just talking about craving donuts so we had to turn in. Little did we know, it was 12:45 and they were closing soon. The person behind the counter was welcoming and friendly, regardless. They only had some kolaches, donut holes, and apple fritters left. We bought 2 each of the sausage and cheese kolaches, and the fritters. We took full advantage of the kolaches in the car while they were still warm. We saved the fritters until we got home so we could have them with coffee. Really good! Next time, we plan to drop into this tiny little donut shop earlier in the day so we can indulge in more of what they have to offer. read more

Service is by far beyond exceptional! My husband and I have gone in with our two children a couple times, and each time the gentleman in the front greets us with such a warm welcome. He is great with our kids, they just love him. Its just a little gem, but I really think it's due to his service. It's exactly what a little donut shop should be. Their donuts are also really good btw. Nice and doughy, my husband approves of their chocolate old fashions and our kids are all about their donut holes and sprinkled doughnuts. Found this place on a drive by one Friday night and decided to come back on Sunday morning. I didnt read the Yelp reviews until later but I was glad I didn't run into the infamous rude guy that works weekday mornings. We were helped by a very friendly and polite lady. The inside is small with only a couple tables and chairs. More grab and go then a sit and savor (I just made that up right now). We went with half a dozen glaze donut holes, half a dozen donuts (blueberry cake, rainbow sprinkles, old fashion cinnamon, fruity pebble, lemon filled, apple fritter) and a boudin kolache. +All the donuts were good. Great taste, textures and a nice variety. My favorites were probably the blueberry cake and the cinnamon old fashioned. They were light, airy and crispy. Both had amazing flavors that weren't overpowering or that can sometimes leave a greasy aftertaste in your mouth with some cake donuts. +I'm a big fan of boudin so I really enjoyed the boudin kolache. I thought it was kind of random seeing this cajun sausage snack at this little donut shop but it was definitely a good change of pace from all the other kolaches you could get around town. For those of you who aren't familiar, boudin is rice, meat (usually ground pork or liver) and flavorful cajun seasonings stuffed into sausage casings. It may sound kind of intimidating but its delicious! I enjoyed Donut Palace as it served it's purpose for my weekend donut fix, with a nice bonus snack coming from the boudin kolache. My husband stopped in to get a quick breakfast and I was doubtful because the windows were very dirty. The whole place just looked dirty. After a short discussion I relented because my husband was hungry and we needed to get going. My initial impression of the place was already bad. We order 2 Boudin Kolaches, a bear claw and a vanilla cappuccino from one of those machines that make it from powder. Cost a little under $10. In the car I gave my husband his kolache and it was nice and golden and he seemed happy with it. I pulled mine out and its shriveled and undercooked. Very unappetizing. The cappuccino was so thick that even after adding about 2 inches of water I still couldn't drink it. After that I didn't have an appetite for the donut. It probably was ok but I just didn't bother with it. Will not return. read more

After visiting this place, I am stunned. The donuts? Fresh, flavorful, on point and well-stocked even an hour before close. Highly recommend the blueberry cake, they make a great treat for the office if you are running late one morning- a few more minutes won't matter, and then you'll have an excuse. But the kolaches are the best on this side of town! Versions include plain sausage, sausage with cheese, and sausage with cheese and jalapenos. But if you're really lucky, you'll come on a day they have Boudin kolaches! They're huge, a meal and steal at about $2.50 each (regular versions are under $1.50). Service is friendly, shop is clean and welcoming, and I'm kicking myself for driving past this place for years without giving it a try sooner. read more

Oohhwhee! I needed a sugar fix recently and this was the mark. My favorite flavor here: blueberry. It was sweet enough, had a bit of a crispy outside, moist inside, and a nice blueberry taste that I love. The kolache I had was pretty huge but the texture of the bread was similar to that of a croissant. My partner in crime an I also bought a dozen and a half plus kolaches to bring to some friends for breakfast - price? About $13. Parking is in a private lot but the drive thru is right there in your face if you park near the door. So I usually go to the drive-thru at this donut shop and the staff is usually pretty friendly however around 6 months ago Ithis this time to get my donuts after stepping up to the counter I realized there was a fly inside the donut case and I asked the lady who I assume was the owner or the mother of this Asian family that worked there if she could get me a donut from the back she gave me a weird look and went to the back and got me a fresh donut I think so two weeks ago I went inside again this time I saw a large bee​ inside the donut case time I asked the man. If he could get me a different donut from the back I also explained to him that I was there a few months back and I saw a fly inside the case at this point his smile dropped and he told me if I don't like it and I can leave he then ushered me out the door turn the light off lock the door and turn the open sign to closed. I made the mistake of driving thru Donut Palace when I was nostalgic for donuts like I used to get in my 20's in CA. Uh Oh, I go back several times a week now... ;} I am a purist: it is glazed and maybe chocolate glazed for me. They are so good: fluffy, light, pull apart, no coating of fat on the back of the roof of your mouth, glaze just thin enough and glossy enough; then flakes when it dries a bit. The chocolate glaze is not too sweet. The people are upbeat and attentive. My only complaint is that if you go close to closing, they are so generous, you might end up with an extra donut or some donut holes free with your order.
