Be wary of paying by credit card. They are going present you with a portable screen where you can leave a 15, 20, or 25% tip. There is an option to not leave a tip, but most people like myself in the moment will check one of the tip amounts out of charity I guess, or so we won't feel like a cheapskate. But either way, umm, why am I leaving a tip? For walking 7 steps, picking out a few donuts and kolaches? The service was pedestrian. The donuts were only marginally better than HEB. Kolaches were tiny, overpriced, and forgettable. And look at the sprinkles, or lack thereof. Businesses that do not offer services where tips are normally rendered, but still solicit tips in such an in your face way, is really frustrating. Anyone who has busted their butts waiting tables for tips will find this practice a bit shameful. It needs to stop. And I know, "just don't leave a tip and don't worry about it", I get that, but in general, this practice has to stop. If you've you've got a small order, it's no biggie, but on a larger order, when you've been guilted into larger tip, for reasons unclear, it leaves a bad taste in your mouth. read more

I always enjoy a stop at Shipley's donuts. I think the donuts are the best in town. The taste is beyond the sugared flavored yeast bread you get from Krispy Kreme. When you bite into a Shipley's donut you get the fix you need for your sugar craving. A fix that is not imitated all day over and over again. Because, Shipley's is not like Krispy Kreme and make there donuts all day till 11pm. If they did you obviously would not get the great tasting product that you get from them. The donuts are great, but the real reason we stop here on our way to church are the sausage and ham kolaches. It's like a freshly hand made hot pocket, which makes a great snack morning or afternoon. I go here a lot (lol) and so here are my personal pros and cons: Pros: * The staff is always extremely friendly :) conversation is always funny and inviting! * If there is a line, it seems to always move at a fast pace * They have a good range of different type of donuts and prices are good/normal * The blended coffee is a good size, tasty, and has a lot of flavors but, the price might be nice or hurtful to different consumers @ $3.50 * The location is nice with the entrance off the access road but with two exits to help you get out of the lot easily. Cons: * While the sausage in the kolache IS TASTY, the kolache could really stand to improve on only one thing -- SAUSAGE TO BREAD RATIO. The bread comes out about 1.5-2 inches further than the small sausage link and is very fluffy so, you're eating bread a whole lot more than anything else. It's a bummer because now I ONLY get donuts here and kolachies somewhere else so HOPEFULLY this review is read, considered, and entices them to come up with a better game plan because I don't want to go to two places for stuff for too long. I wonder if the sales in this area lacks compared to others because buyers are only making the mistake of buying the kolaches a handful of times or less. Semi, possible con: * The coffee could probably have more coffee IN it but, with all the flavor there might be a decent amount and I just can't tell all the time. Consistent and available. This chain of stores helps me to handle my DD-less town. This specific location has never disappointed me - the cake donuts are nice and warm with a perfect crusted outside. Please be warned the Chinese lady working there is shady. I see the menu to think what i am going to order, because i hate getting to the window and not knowing what to get. I order an iced caramel coffee and she gives me something I've never seen, i remove the lid and it looks blended. I see her looking at me and i tell her she gave me something i didn't order and she tells me i ordered caramel and i said yes but i ordered an caramel iced coffee. She said i gave you a blended. I tell her again that is not what i ordered then she started saying she doesn't have caramel iced coffee (when the menu clearly states otherwise). I told her the menu shows there is caramel, then she mentioned they ran out and she only has mocha and vanilla. I tell her then you need to tell me that, can i have a vanilla. She said i don't have vanilla, at that point all i wanted was to leave. I told her mocha was fine and she opened the fridge served me from a store bought container and just poured ice. I can not believe she had the audacity to do that. She doesn't have customer service skills and she doesn't communicate with you. I feel that the service there is far better and the donut quality is much more than any other place in San Antonio. One thing you can count on at Shipley's is consistently good donuts and koloches. This spot is always good. The service both times I've been to this location has always been quick and positive attitudes from employees. Even though it was raining and I went through the drive thru, the two young girls worked quickly to get my order to me. There is no cover so when they open the window they get wet also. I was shocked by how horrible the service was here. I pull up through the drive thru and I can here one employee yelling at another through the window. Best doughnuts in San Antonio - hands down. As an all-around lover of anything doughnut, I've put away my fair share of fried dough. I grew up eating them from the Albertson's bakery and I've had more doughnuts from HEB than I care to think about. I'll admit I was super excited when Krispy Kreme came to down a few years back but I was a bit disappointed by their doughnuts. Don't get me wrong - their doughnuts are delicious. If you get them while they're still warm they practically melt in your mouth. But they're just too sweet for me. They're so sweet, in fact, that I can only eat one at a time. And even then I feel like I need a shot of insulin to make it through the day. My other problem with them is that they're made by a machine. There's something about an irregularly-shaped, obviously hand-made doughnut that appeals to me. Maybe it's that 'homemade' look that just appeals to me, I'm not sure. Shipley's gets my vote every time. Their doughnuts taste fresh, they're not overly sweet, and their dough has a deliciously evil amount of chewiness. I'm not sure about this but the staff appears to be related - the elderly woman who helps me at the counter is super sweet and reminds me of my late grandmother. This doesn't have a lot to do with their doughnuts, but the courtesy of their staff definitely makes an impact on my experience. So give them a shot, you won't regret it. I challenge you to find a better Cinnamon Twist in town. read more

My only issue with this place is the service. It takes too long to get people thru the drive-thru (which is the point of the drive thru) and they should really implement an order-taking system BEFORE the window. That way when people, with no common sense, place huge orders thru the drive-thru you're not just finding out about it and trying to prepare it at the window and making everyone else wait in excess of 30 minutes (and yes, this actually did happen). Also, stop letting your kids run the window. They don't listen well and they're part of the problem when we're talking about order speed and accuracy and they don't even look like they're the legal age to actually work. read more
